Gabriela Youth to Comelec: Disqualify Duterte Youth

GMA Network27-05-2025
The Gabriela Youth on Tuesday filed a formal letter with the Commission on Elections (Comelec), seeking for the disqualification of the Duterte Youth party-list from Eleksyon 2025.
Members of the progressive group trooped in front of the Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila to stage a rally for the immediate resolution of a 2019 petition seeking to nullify the registration of the Duterte Youth.
"Duterte Youth is a fraud. They do not represent the dreams, demands, or struggles of the Filipino youth. What they represent is a legacy of red-tagging, militarism, and violence—especially toward women, LGBTQ+ youth, and those who dare to speak out," said Gabriela Youth National Spokesperson Fran Reyes.
"Duterte Youth does not speak for us. They are a mouthpiece for state terror, not a voice for the youth. Their disqualification is not just legal—it is moral and urgent,' Reyes added.
Duterte Youth ranked second during the recently-concluded May 12 elections, garnering 2,338,564 votes, translating to two seats in the House of Representatives.
However, the Comelec suspended their proclamation due to pending cases filed against them.
In March, the Kabataan Tayo ang Pag-asa also filed with the poll body an urgent motion to resolve a petition seeking to cancel or to declare nullity their registration of Duterte Youth for being void ab initio, or void from the beginning for committing material representation when they fieled overaged nominees in 2019.
The case has been pending with the poll body for the past six years.
Section 9 of Republic Act No. 7491 or the Party-list System Act states that party-list representatives of the youth sector should only be aged between 25 to 30 years old. Cardema was 34 years old when he was named Duterte Youth first nominee.
In August 2019, the Comelec canceled Cardema's nomination due to misrepresentation. He was replaced by his wife, Ducielle Cardema.
GMA Integrated News has reached out to Duterte Youth for comment on the issue and will publish them as soon as they respond. —RF, GMA Integrated News

Explanation sought over 'rights violations' of some Pinoys nabbed by ICE

NEW YORK—Several U.S. lawmakers are demanding an explanation regarding the alleged mistreatment of Asian lawful permanent residents—including Filipinos—who were arrested by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In a letter addressed to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus expressed their concern after several Asian Americans detained by the CBP and ICE were allegedly deprived of their right to legal counsel and due process. The letter cited troubling cases such as that of Filipino Mrs. Lewelyn Dixon, who was detained after living legally in the U.S. for 50 years and Mr. Maximo Londonio, a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, who was held in ICE custody for two months following a vacation in the Philippines. 'These cases suggest possible violations of constitutional protections. The U.S. Constitution provides critical due process protections for all persons within the United States, regardless of immigration status," the lawmakers wrote. "The Fifth Amendment protects against actions by the federal government that violate due process, while the Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to legal counsel in criminal cases. The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed that LPRs are entitled to these same protections,' they added. The letter—signed by fourteen lawmakers—was led by New York Representative Grace Meng, who serves as Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. The lawmakers are requesting an explanation regarding the denial of the right to legal counsel and constitutional protections to those in CBP custody, as well as the total number of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who have been detained since President Donald Trump took office.

Marcos: Education is the gauge of my admin's success

If there's one project that President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. wants to finish before his term ends in 2028, it will be his programs for education. In an interview with GMA Integrated News, Marcos said he is aiming that each Filipino family would have a college graduate. He stressed that the education would be the ''gauge of success of this administration.'' ''Education, 'yung aking sinabi sa SONA na ang bawat pamilyang Pilipino mayroong college graduate o mayroong nag-graduate sa TESDA, bawat pamilyang Pilipino, 'yun para sa akin. Pag nagawa natin ito, successful 'yun,'' Marcos said. (Education, just like what I said during the SONA, each family will have a college or TESD graduate.) The President is confident that this would be doable. He also believed that the country's greatest resource is its citizens. Marcos also said foreigners have a high regard for Filipinos. ''Our greatest resource is our people. Our greatest resource is the human capital of the Philippines. You don't have to look at figures, just talk to foreigners where the Philippines are in their country and what they think of Filipinos and how highly they think of Filipinos,'' Marcos said. ''That's all you need to hear and what are we doing? We should not waste that. We should not waste that,'' he added. In his last SONA, Marcos vowed aggressive actions to address the learning crisis confronting the Philippine education sector, seeking to create a lasting impact for Filipino students, teachers, and families. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

China protests Marcos remarks on Taiwan Strait conflict

China on Friday said it lodged "serious protests" against the Philippines after President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. stated the country may be drawn into a conflict between the United States and China over Taiwan, which Beijing repeatedly threatened to annex by force if necessary. Marcos, in a media interview during his state visit to India, said "there is no way that the Philippines can stay out of it" if an all-out war erupts in the Taiwan Strait due to its geographic location and the presence of around 200,000 Filipino workers on the self-ruling democratic island China claims as part of its territory. Marcos stressed the Philippines adheres to the One-China policy, but noted it also has an obligation "to defend our territory and our sovereignty" and must brace for a possible "humanitarian crisis" as thousands of Filipinos in Taiwan would be trapped in the conflict. "There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China," China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, which also accused Manila of "fudging and hollowing out the one-China principle, and kept harming the China-Philippines relations." "China firmly opposes this. The Chinese Foreign Ministry and embassy in the Philippines have lodged serious protests with the Philippine side," it said. The Philippines is a defense treaty ally of the US, which supports Taiwan's democracy. Washington is bound by law to provide Taipei with "defensive arms" to protect itself from external threats. Beijing said 'near geographic location' and 'a large amount of Filipinos in Taiwan' should "not be used as pretexts to interfere in the internal and sovereign affairs of other countries." The Office of the President and Department of Foreign Affairs have yet to reply to a request for comment. GMA News Online will publish their statements once available. "These claims not only contravene international law and the ASEAN Charter, but also harm regional peace and stability and the fundamental interests of its own people," said China, citing the legal framework of the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations, of which the Philippines is a member. "We urge the Philippines to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the spirit of China-Philippines Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations, and refrain from playing fire on issues bearing on China's core interests." Manila does not have diplomatic ties with Taiwan, which has been separated from the Chinese mainland since 1949. The Philippines, however, maintains a de-facto embassy in Taiwan, called the Manila Economic and Cultural Office or MECO. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
