'Done deal': Trump jumps the gun on US-China trade agreement; draws mockery from skeptics

Time of Indiaa day ago

TOI correspondent from Washington
: US President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that Washington and Beijing have a "done deal" on trade amid broad skepticism given his penchant for verbal overreach and a cautious statement from China which only said a "framework " had been reached to implement a "consensus" reached between the two sides.
"Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me," Trump posted on his Truth Social account on Wednesday morning following two days of talks in London between negotiators, inviting cynical response from skeptics who likened the announcement to a runner saying, "I just completed the Marathon, subject to running the last 10miles successfully."
The Chinese side left no doubt that a full deal was still a work in progress and the two leaders were yet to sign off on it, saying while the talks in London were 'professional, rational, in-depth and candid,' the two sides have, "in principle, reached a framework for implementing the consensus reached by the two heads of state during the phone call on June 5th and the consensus reached at the Geneva meeting."
That consensus centered largely on a 90-day suspension of most of the 100%-plus tariffs the two countries had imposed on each other. The Chinese side did not disclose any progress made in London.
But Trump announced that "full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China" and "Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!"
"WE ARE GETTING A TOTAL OF 55% TARIFFS, CHINA IS GETTING 10%.

RELATIONSHIP IS EXCELLENT! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!" he concluded in his customary all-caps post.
The two sides have engaged in bruising negotiations over the past fortnight, included the in-person meeting in London, leveraging each others' critical stranglehold on the other to reach a broader trade deal. While China shut off supply of critical rare earths required for US weapons and automobile advances in response to Trump's tariff hike, Washington responded by curtailing exports of American products and technology, including chemicals, airplane parts and software, while threatening to bar Chinese students from enrolling in the US.
Which side is backing down is hard to say. While Trump's MAGA flock insists that China had "bent its knee" before their great dealmakers, Trump critics said he has had to retreat in the trade war he initiated, and the matter is far from settled absent a full readout of the talks and the prospective deal, with details.
The skepticism stems from Trump's bombastic claims on a range of topics, from stopping the Russia-Ukraine war on "Day One" to promise of a "gold card" in two weeks, to claims of having brought about truce between India and Pakistan, all of which have turned out to be premature, hollow, or false.
US markets appeared to acknowledge the skepticism, barely budging despite the announcement.

Air India flight crash investigation begins; US, UK send teams

India launched a formal investigation into the crash of London-bound Air India flight 171 at Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, with international teams rushing to assist as the incident involved an American plane and more than 50 UK nationals as victims. Microchip giant NVIDIA woos European markets amid ongoing US-China trade war

Santa Clara, June 12 (UNI) American microchip giant NVIDIA is now wooing European markets, pledging to build 20 AI factories across Europe, as the ongoing US-China trade war has led to the tech conglomerate to suffer huge losses. CEO Jensen Huang, speaking at the annual VivaTech conference in Paris on Wednesday, said that the company was building the world's first 'industrial artificial intelligence cloud' for European manufacturers. The Germany-based facility, a key part of the AI factory (specialised data center) initiative, is set to be equipped with 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), helping European firms such as carmaker BMW Group accelerate manufacturing applications – from design and engineering to robotics, reports South China Morning Post. Stating that Europe had now 'awakened' to the 'importance of AI factories and AI infrastructure', Huang added that NVIDIA plans to boost AI computing capacity in Europe tenfold over the next two years to help local researchers and start-ups address GPU shortages. NVIDIA has also announced a partnership with the French AI company Mistral AI to create a cloud platform powered by 18,000 of its latest chips, enabling European businesses to develop AI based on Mistral's models. To attract more European clients to counter the US restrictions on tech trade with China and make up for its losses in revenue, NVIDIA has been expanding its existing offerings such as DGX Cloud Lepton, an AI platform that provides a marketplace selling access to GPUs available from a growing network of cloud providers, the company said.

Air India crash: Gujarat ex-CM Vijay Rupani believed 1206 his lucky no.

Gujarat ex-CM Vijay Rupani GANDHINAGAR: For Gujarat's former chief minister Vijay Rupani , the number 1206 was a symbol of fortune, a silent companion through the years. He believed in it with a tender faith. The registration plates of all his vehicles - scooters and cars - had 1206 on them. Friends say it had always been his lucky charm. But fate gave it a cruel twist. On June 12 - 12/06 - the same number that followed him for decades marked the day his journey ended. Rupani was aboard the AI flight that crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad. He was en route to London to meet his wife and daughter. He never arrived. The ex-CM, now the party in charge of Punjab, had put off his visit to the UK from June 5 to 12, owing to Ludhiana West bypoll on June 19, said Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar. "This is very unfortunate. This is how destiny and fate play out that he came into harm's way. He was to leave along with his wife on June 5, but rescheduled his visit to campaign for Ludhiana West bypoll," Jakhar told TOI. Rajkot mourns demise of ex-CM Rupani, its friendly neighbour In Rajkot, the city ex-CM Vijay Rupani had served and loved, the news settled like a slow, heavy fog. He wasn't just a political figure - he was a familiar face, a neighbour, a man who had time for everyone. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Comfortably: 60 m² Prefab Bungalow for Seniors in Inezgane Pre Fabricated Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo Those who knew him remember his humility more than his achievements. He had been instrumental in key development works - the new airport, AIIMS - but it was his quiet presence, his unwavering availability, that left a deeper mark. "He was a tall neta, yes," said Sanjay Mehta, a neighbour. "But he lived like one of us. Always kind. Always ready to help. You'd never know he held such a big position. To us, he was Vijaybhai - our neighbour, friend." Politicians from across the political spectrum condoled Rupani's death and paid tribute. Authorities involved in rescue and relief operations confirmed he was among the dead. His nephew Mehul Rupani said, "The family is devastated to know about the sad demise of uncle. Anjali aunty (Rupani's wife) and her daughter are returning from London, as are other relatives from the US. We will follow the processes as advised by govt to take custody of his mortal remains. Family is in shock." Rupani's personal assistant Shailesh Mandaliya, who dropped him off at the airport, said, "Few minutes after dropping him, we heard the news." Born on Aug 2, 1956 in Yangon, Myanmar into a Jain family, Rupani, was the seventh and youngest child. His family moved to Rajkot in 1960 due to political instability in Myanmar.
