Wu administration steps up pressure for Revs stadium mitigation
Shen emphasized to Bilello in the letter that addressing 'community mitigation is not optional, nor to be taken lightly.'

A spokesperson for the Kraft Group issued a statement saying that the company was surprised by the letter and that it is inconsistent with the positive tone and numerous productive discussions both sides have had since they started meeting in February.
The Wu-Kraft discussions are happening amid a political backdrop: Wu is running for reelection this year, and her principal challenger is Josh Kraft, a former nonprofit executive whose father, Robert Kraft, is lead executive and owner of the Kraft Group and its two pro sports teams. Two of Josh Kraft's brothers are also top executives there. Josh Kraft had said he would recuse himself from any stadium discussions if elected.

The May 1 deadline came and went without an outside mediator participating. But now, judging from Shen's letter, that phase is imminent.
In an attachment to the letter, the Wu administration outlines a series of concerns it would like to see addressed, or at least analyzed. They include: MBTA connections and capacity for those attending games and concerts, off-site parking options, the effects on water quality in the Mystic and Boston Harbor, flood resilience, noise impacts, and estimates of the number of construction and permanent jobs.

City officials also want a forecast of the impact that the nearly 25,000-seat stadium would have on rival concert venues in Boston — TD Garden, Fenway Park, and the Leader Bank Pavilion. (That's one of the issues that came up during the State House negotiations over the legislation.)
Shen, in his letter, again draws a parallel between a mitigation agreement valued at $68 million
Several of the questions that Shen raises presumably will be tackled by an outside consultant, Watertown-based VHB, that the Kraft Group has asked to address transportation and other related issues around the stadium, its construction, and future impact.
'Throughout this process the Kraft Group has operated in good faith and has supplied Boston with every piece of information the city has requested,' said Kraft Group spokesperson Anisha Chakrabarti. 'During our many meetings and conversations, representatives from Boston have not expressed these concerns with our process or with our efforts.'
Chakrabarti added that Kraft Group executives are 'deeply disappointed that politics and grandstanding seem to have taken place over thoughtful analysis and collaboration. This simply impedes progress and economic development for the City of Everett, the City of Boston, and the Commonwealth.'

Cane sugar: What is it, and where can you already find it?
(NEXSTAR) — Coca-Cola made a major announcement — or rather, confirmed an announcement made by President Donald Trump last week — that it will launch a cane sugar version of its soda later this year. The company said Tuesday in a press release that this comes 'as part of its ongoing innovation agenda.' The Coca-Cola products you find on shelves and at soda fountains — like those returning to a major retailer this year — are largely sweetened with corn syrup. Elsewhere, the company already uses cane sugar. That includes Mexico, though you can find 'Mexican Coke' in the U.S. already. 'Quiet cracking' is the newest term for a workplace problem — and it's 'pretty pervasive,' expert says Cane sugar, the U.S. Department of Agriculture explains, is 'derived directly or indirectly from sugarcane produced in the United States, including sugar produced from sugarcane molasses.' A previous report from the department listed Florida and Louisiana as the top producers of sugarcane, followed distantly by Texas and Hawaii. Some of Coca-Cola's competitors, namely PepsiCo and Dr Pepper, have been selling versions of their colas sweetened with cane sugar in the U.S. for over a decade. Others in the soda industry have been relying on cane sugar for even longer. That includes Canada-based Jones Soda, New York's Johnnie Ryan, Boylan Bottling and Texas' Dublin Craft Soda. In addition to pure cane sugar, you can also find it in cereals, ice creams, chocolate, and other sweetened goods. Corn syrup, meanwhile, is made from the glucose extracted from corn and refined. High fructose corn syrup, like that found in Coca-Cola already, is a combination of glucose and fructose. On the heels of Trump's announcement last week that Coke would be using cane sugar, U.S. corn refiners warned of the potential impact on American farmers. In an updated statement shared with Nexstar on Tuesday, John Bode, president and CEO of the Corn Refiners Association, shared similar concerns. 'We have no doubt that Coca-Cola can source enough U.S. cane sugar to meet its needs, but increased use of U.S. cane sugar is certain to lead to a corresponding increase in imports of foreign cane sugar. Replacing high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar would cost thousands of American food manufacturing jobs, depress farm income, and expand the trade deficit.' Regardless of whether a drink contains corn syrup, cane sugar, or another sweetener, health experts generally advise against the over-consumption of sweeteners or added sugars. The Food and Drug Administration says there is no evidence of any difference in safety among foods sweetened with high fructose corn syrup and those that contain sugar, honey or other traditional sweeteners. Coca-Cola also called high fructose corn syrup 'safe' last week, saying 'it has about the same number of calories per serving as table sugar and is metabolized in a similar way by your body.' Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, whose nutrition views often diverge from mainstream nutrition science, has spoken out against sugar. His agency is expected to release updated nutrition guidelines later this year. 'There's things we'll never be able to eliminate, like sugar,' Kennedy said at an April news conference. 'And sugar is poison, and Americans need to know that.' Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners are also named as a concern in a government report Kennedy issued in May.

Target to end price match policy — and customers are seeing red. ‘Not a good move'
Target is planning to ditch its competitor price match policy, a decision that has some customers seeing red. Starting July 28, the retail giant said it will only offer price matching between Target stores and a company spokesperson confirmed to McClatchy News. For more than a decade, Target's 'price match guarantee' allowed customers to match the price of identical items sold at a lower price by Walmart and Amazon, in addition to its own stores, according to its website. For example, customers could match prices on in-store purchases, and vice versa. Prices can be matched at the time of purchase or within 14 days, Target said. 'We've found our guests overwhelmingly price match Target and not other retailers, which reflects the great value and trust in pricing that consumers see across our assortment and deals,' a Target spokesperson told McClatchy News in a statement July 21. The Minneapolis-based retailer launched its price match policy in 2013 in a move then-CEO Gregg Steinhafel said would offer shoppers an 'unbeatable value,' CBS News reported. The new policy will allow customers to 'continue to shop with confidence,' the Target spokesperson said. A notice shared in stores also cited 'guest feedback' for the changes, which have drawn the ire of some shoppers. 'I used to shop at Target a lot,' one person wrote on Reddit. 'Not anymore. This is ridiculous, and not a good move.' 'What, do guests not like saving money?' wrote another. 'I'd price match Amazon or Walmart at times and then use my discount (yes this follows policy),' another shopper posted on Reddit, adding: 'Well, I'll just buy less or buy it where it's cheaper.' The changes comes as Target struggles with lagging sales, due in part to ongoing fallout over the company's decision to roll back its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, as reported by KCRA and CNN. The company also pointed to backlash over LGBTQ-themed items offered at stores during Pride Month in 2023. First-quarter sales this year dipped nearly 4 percent as the retailer 'navigated a highly challenging environment,' Target CEO Brian Cornell said in an earnings report published in May. '...We're not satisfied with current performance and know we have opportunities to deliver faster progress on our roadmap for growth,' Cornell said. Target was the last to continue offering a price match guarantee on items from competitors, according to NewsNation. Walmart doesn't offer price matching for rival retailers — only online and in-store purchases, its website says. Amazon currently does not offer price matching.
