July 23 decision on LD Vocational College murder case

By: Bernama Text Size: TAWAU: The High Court today postponed to July 23 its decision on the case involving 13 male students of Lahad Datu Vocational College, who are jointly charged with the murder of their college mate Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat Mohd Narul Azwan, last year. The verdict, initially scheduled for today, was postponed to allow for clarification related to the submissions, according to deputy public prosecutor, Nur Nisla Abdul Latif.
Advertisement She said that both prosecution and defence had filed their written submissions. The prosecution had filed a total of 366 pages of written submission. 'The defence team, comprising eight lawyers, has also filed their submissions,' she told reporters at the High Court, here, today. On May 14, High Court Judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol had set today to decide on the Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat murder case. However, a notice issued by the High Court yesterday (June 10) informed parties of the rescheduling. On Feb 28, Duncan ordered the 13 teenagers, aged 16 to 19, to enter their defence on the charge of murdering Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat, 17, in the dormitory rooms 7 Resak and 5 Belian at the Lahad Datu Vocational College, between 9pm on March 21 and 7.38am on March 22, 2024. They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, read together with Section 34 of the same Code which carries the death penalty, or up to 40 years' imprisonment and not more than 12 strokes of the cane, if convicted. The defence proceedings began on March 10, with 18 witnesses, including all 13 accused, called to testify. The prosecution had earlier opened its case on Nov 19 last year, calling 25 witnesses, including students and teachers from the vocational college. Apart from Nur Nisla, the prosecution team also includes DPPs Ng Juhn Tao and Batrisyia Mohd Khusri. Eight of the students were represented by lawyers Datuk Ram Singh, Kamarudin Mohmad Chinki and Chen Wen Jye, while five others were represented by lawyers Mohamed Zairi Zainal Abidin, Abdul Ghani Zelika, Vivian Thien, Jhesseny P. Lorry driver arrested for reckless driving and obstructing police
NIBONG TEBAL: A lorry driver was arrested for reckless driving during a police chase and for obstructing authorities from inspecting his vehicle during an integrated operation on Saturday night. The incident unfolded during a police operation targeting street thugs, codenamed Op Samseng Jalanan, near the Jawi toll plaza at about 11.30pm. During the operation, the police spotted two tipper lorries being driven suspiciously. Seberang Prai Selatan district police chief Superintendent Jay January Siowou said that when the drivers were signalled to stop, both ignored police orders and sped off towards Nibong Tebal's main road. He added that one of the lorries ran a red light at Bukit Panchor and nearly collided with a policeman stationed at the intersection. "The driver continued to flee, driving dangerously along Jalan Transkrian, before the vehicle was intercepted and apprehended by police with assistance from mobile patrol vehicles and police motorcycle patrol units at Jalan Sungai Daun in Kampung Ladang Kalidonia. "Initial investigations showed that the suspect did not have a valid driving license or Goods Driver's License (GDL). "Further checks indicated that the vehicle's road tax had expired, although its insurance remained valid," he said in a statement on Sunday. Jay added that the suspect tested negative for drugs during a urine screening and that the vehicle had been seized. The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving. "We want to remind the public that reckless driving is a serious offence that can result in fatal accidents, and we will not hesitate to take stern action," he said. Jay said police would intensify enforcement efforts, particularly operations targeting dangerous drivers, to ensure the safety of all road users.

Two female students fight at secondary school over false rumours
GOMBAK: An argument over spreading false rumours escalated into a fight between two female students at a secondary school here on Thursday, prompting a police investigation. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said the case came to light following a report lodged by a Form Five female student. "The fight involved female students and preliminary investigations found that only two students were involved in the incident. "The altercation is believed to have been triggered by provocation, where one party accused the other of spreading false rumours," he said in a statement today. He said the case is being investigated under Section 160 of the Penal Code and no arrests have been made so far.

Johor Baru Selatan OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the incident was believed to have stemmed from the suspect's dissatisfaction after his Perodua Axia was towed away by the city council a day earlier. "The suspect, who had no money to pay for the compound, allegedly poured petrol and set the truck on fire, causing an estimated RM10,000 loss. "Police apprehended the suspect on the same day at 1.06pm and seized several items, including an aluminium container and a lighter," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 17). He said checks revealed that the suspect had previously been involved in a case under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. However, he tested negative for drugs. He added that the suspect has been remanded for five days starting yesterday to facilitate further investigation under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine on conviction.
