Buchi Babu cricket: Tamil Nadu look to find a spin partner for Sai Kishore
CHENNAI: The Buchi Babu invitational tournament, which traditionally acts as a preparatory event for the Ranji Trophy, could not have come at a better time for
Tamil Nadu
.
Different factors – including workload management and injuries to key players – have put TN outside their comfort zone ahead of the red-ball competition that will begin here on Monday.
The tourney will serve as a testing ground for TN, who will seek answers to some probing questions via their two teams – TNCA President's XI and TNCA XI.
Among those is the quest to find an able ally for lead spinner R Sai Kishore in the first phase of the Ranji Trophy. Sai Kishore's partner-in-crime S Ajith Ram, a left-arm slow bowler who has been a mainstay in the TN XI for the last few years, is set to be out of action until at least December, after suffering an ACL injury during the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

With TN set to play three of their first five matches of the Ranji season on the spin-friendly Coimbatore ground, discovering the right combination will be high on the agenda.
While left-arm tweaker M Siddharth (TNCA XI) is likely to be the front-runner to replace Ajith Ram, he will have to demonstrate during Buchi Babu that he is cut above the rest. DT Chandrasekar (TNCA XI), P Vidyuth (TNCA President's XI) and P Vignesh (TNCA President's XI) are the other left-arm spinners in the fray, with Lakshay Jain (TNCA XI) and J Hemchudeshan (TNCA President's XI) being the off-spinning options.

Given that Sai Kishore has been ruled out with a minor finger injury, the TNCA President's XI slow bowlers may receive the opportunity to take up the lead role. TN head coach M Senthilnathan said that it is up to the players to make a strong case for themselves.
'We have enough spin-bowling talent to encounter this situation. The Buchi Babu tournament gives them a platform to showcase their skills. Some of these players are not well established at TN's senior level, so the tournament will allow us to pick the right players for the Ranji Trophy,' Senthilnathan told TOI on Sunday.
Chandrasekar was the topper of the TNCA first division league's wickets chart in the opening phase, while Vidyuth and Hemchudeshan were also placed in the top-15. 'We have many left-arm spinners in TN and they have shown that they are capable of picking up wickets,' added Senthilnathan. Meanwhile, U-19 stars RS Ambrish (TNCA President's XI), K Abhinav (TNCA President's XI) and D Deepesh (TNCA XI) will get a taste of senior-level cricket.

Sarfaraz Khan smashes century for Mumbai in Buchi Babu Trophy 2025 opener, retires hurt on 138
Out-of-favour India middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan smashed a blistering hundred for Mumbai against TNCA XI on the opening day of the Buchi Babu Trophy tournament in Chennai. Coming in to bat at No.5, Sarfaraz reached his hundred in just 92 deliveries, and stitched a 129-run stand for the sixth wicket with Aakash Parkar. Sarfaraz eventually retired hurt on 138 off 114 balls. His knock included 10 fours and six sixes. The 27-year-old is eyeing a comeback to the Indian Test team after he was left out of the squad for the tour of England. Though he was picked in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, he didn't play a single game in the five-match affair. The last of Sarfaraz's six Tests came during New Zealand's tour of India last year. After scoring a brilliant 150 in the first Test against the Kiwis in Bengaluru, Sarfaraz just managed 21 runs in the subsequent four innings as India was blanked 0-3 at home. In 11 Test innings so far, Sarfaraz has scored 371 runs at a middling average of 37.10. However, with Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan failing to make a statement with the willow during the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series in England, Sarfaraz has a golden opportunity to be in the scheme of things again ahead of a packed home season. In his most recent outing in First-Class cricket, Sarfaraz had impressed with a steady 92-run knock during India A's tour of England ahead of the five-Test series.
