AUT holds protest over pending faculty CAS benefits, salary issues
'The protest was held to urge the authorities to sanction the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) service and monetary benefits of staff in government aided colleges that have been denied for the past four years. Secondly, despite the fact that teachers who have gone to court and got favourable orders regarding this issue, the Department of Higher Education and the Government have preferred a Special Leave Petition at the Supreme Court, which is coming up for trial on August 1. This exposes the partial attitude of the Government towards teachers,' a senior AUT leader said.
Staff in 163 aided colleges have not been sanctioned CAS benefits for several years by the Department of Higher Education, even though they had been given to teachers in government arts and science colleges, added the AUT leader.
The body also petitioned the authorities to pay salaries of 106 teachers and administrative employees of the erstwhile constituent colleges of Bharathidasan University that had ceased from April.
The petition condemned the delay in approval of faculty appointments in several aided colleges. AUT Tiruchi general secretary K. Raja, treasurer K. Syed Ahamed Kabeer, and members from other zonal chapters, spoke.

The Supreme Court on Monday (August 4, 2025) agreed to hear on August 6 the appeal of the DMK Government against the Madras High Court order asking it not to use names and photographs of present and former Chief Ministers in welfare schemes. A Bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran took note of the submissions of senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the State Government, that the High Court by its interim order restrained use of names and portraits of the CM and former CMs in welfare schemes. Mr. Rohtagi said it has been held by the Supreme Court that the name and pictures of the CM can be used in welfare schemes. The Bench agreed to hear the plea on Wednesday (August 6). 'Ungaludan Stalin': Madras HC bars naming schemes after living persons The Madras High Court, on July 31, restrained the Tamil Nadu Government from naming any new or rebranded public welfare schemes after living individuals. It also barred the use of portraits of former Chief Ministers, ideological leaders, or any Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) insignia, emblem, or flag in advertisements promoting such schemes. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice Sunder Mohan passed the order while hearing a PIL filed by AIADMK MP Shanmugam. The MP had challenged the naming and promotion of the government's public outreach programme titled 'Ungaludan Stalin' (With You, Stalin), alleging that it violated established norms. While the Bench clarified that the order did not prevent the State from launching, implementing, or operating any welfare schemes, it stated the restrictions applied solely to the nomenclature and promotional content associated with such schemes.

RTI activist questions latest order on re-employment of retirees issued by Department of Higher Education
The latest order by the Department of Higher Education permitting re-employment of Joint Director, Regional Joint Director, Principals in Grade I and II, College Librarians, and Directors of Physical Education who are engaged in administrative nature of job, after attainment of superannuation, has been questioned by an RTI activist in Coimbatore. In the Government Order 192 dated November 12, 2024, the re-employment for these posts were dispensed with, on the last day of the month of attaining the age of superannuation. The latest order issued on July 31 was based on the request of the Commissioner of Collegiate Education for permitting their re-employment. In a petition submitted to the Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, RTI activist and former Associate Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, CBM College, Coimbatore, N.R. Ravisankar, said the re-employment order of the Higher Education Department ran counter to the amendment made to the Government Order 92. It states that every government servant in the superior as well as basic service shall retire from service on the afternoon of the last day of the month of attainment of 60 years. They shall not be retained in service after that age. 'The Amendment is clear that those attaining the age of 60 years on superannuation cannot continue further. How then is it possible for the Higher Education Department to issue the G.O. on reemployment which is applicable to the posts in the government-aided colleges as well. Citing an instance of the directive given to a government-aided college in Coimbatore to appoint a new Principal by cancelling the re-employment of the existing principal based on the retirement age of 60 years, Prof. Ravichandran said the latest G.O. of the Higher Education Department on re-employment has to be withdrawn.

Over 2.84 lakh Tripura farmers got Rs 45.43 crore under PM Kisan, says CM Manik Saha
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi's (PM-Kisan) 20th installment on Saturday, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said that over 2.84 lakh farmers from the state received Rs 45.43 crore under the scheme. 'Under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, various steps have been taken to empower our farmers. PM Kisan Samman Nidhi is a significant step in this direction,' Saha wrote on X. 'Today, the 20th installment of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme – Rs 20,500 crore virtually disbursed by the Hon'ble PM to honor the farmers across the country including Tripura. A total of 2.84 lakh farmers from Tripura received Rs 45,43,74,000. Attended a programme held at the State Agricultural Research Center, A.D. Nagar on this occasion & encouraged the farmers.' While speaking at a separate programme of the Sampoornata Abhiyan Samman Samaroh, Saha said the BJP Government laid emphasis on providing people from all sections with proper facilities and had been working to improve the socioeconomic condition of the people in the state's underdeveloped areas. Saha further stated that the Government had launched a project titled Targeted Rural Initiatives for Poverty Termination and Infrastructure ( TRIPTI) to uplift nearly 4,000 poor families in the Ganganagar block of Dhalai district and in the Dasda block of North Tripura district. The chief minister added that nearly 55 crore zero-balance accounts were opened throughout the country under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Saha also inaugurated the Navdisha Abhiyan, with an Rs 50-crore outlay for the socioeconomic development of 10,000 families living in 16 blocks across the state. 'The Government's target is to upgrade the lifestyle of the marginalised families. Campaigns for the socioeconomic development of those who have not joined the self-help groups (SHGs) for various reasons have been launched,' he added. The state has 53,951 SHGs, with 4.84 lakh women members, under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission. Saha said the Central Government had identified 112 aspirational districts and 500 aspirational blocks throughout the country for special development efforts. 'Emphasis has been given to different sectors like health, nutrition, education, agriculture, and social development in each block. The indigenous leaders' monthly allowance has recently been hiked from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. Our Government has prioritised the integration of castes and tribes,' the chief minister added.
