Fresh push to solve case of Dublin boy who vanished without a trace 40 years ago
Philip Cairns was 13 when he disappeared in October 1986 – and now his cousin Gareth is trying to uncover what happened ahead of the 40th anniversary of his disappearance. Gareth, who has worked for RTE, 4fm, and Classic Hits Radio, has issued a colour photograph of the original Garda search operation to launch the new campaign.
He said: 'I'm back with a renewed and determined effort to find out what happened to Philip. If you're interested in supporting me, then please spread the word that I'm back to keep searching.'
Philip's disappearance has featured heavily in the Irish Mirror's ongoing Missed campaign to highlight the scores of high profile missing cases in Ireland. Schoolboy Philip was still wearing his uniform when vanished from his home in Rathfarnham, Co Dublin, on October 23, 1986. He had returned home for lunch and set off to go back to school but was never seen again.
His family issued appeals in an RTE documentary in 2020, a 2021 book titled The Boy Who Never Came Home forensically examined his disappearance, and a podcast titled Vanished: The Philip Cairns Story was made last year.
Philip's broadcaster cousin Gareth said: 'There have been book chapters, true crime theories and television reports over the years, and mind-blowing accusations that have led to nothing – but someone knows.'
He said of the relaunch: 'Philip Cairns will be missing 40 years next year. It's hard to believe where all those years have gone. Philip would be 52 right now. It's also hard to believe that it's now almost 10 years since I started to research some of the circumstances that still surround his disappearance.
'It yielded a huge reaction from both those who knew him growing up and went to school with him, and from those who might not have known him but could quickly recall their own memories of the day he went missing in October 1986. Ten years is a long time in anyone's life and those of you who were kind enough to come forward with memories of that time are now that much older.
'It's a huge chunk of time and so much changes in that period.' He added: 'Here's the first photo that I published in 2016 of Philip's school bag, that was found dumped in the laneway. It was between Ann Devlin Road and Ann Devlin Drive in Rathfarnham very soon after he went missing.
'Alongside it is an AI-colourised version of the photo. Maybe the enhanced image might jolt a few memories? Ten years has been a long time. There is more to come for sure.'

Mr Lincoln is accused of possession of a knife 'which had a blade or which was sharply pointed' in the area of Balcurris Park West in Dublin 11 on August 12. The accused is also facing a rap for failing to provide a member of An Garda Siochana with his name and address after the member made the demand. The charges are contrary to Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act and the Public Order Act. Mr Lincoln was remanded on continuing bail and will appear again later this year. If Mr Lincoln is found guilty of the possession of a knife offence at District court level, he may be fined up to €1,000 or face up to 12 months behind bars, or both. There are harsher penalties if he is convicted of this offence at a higher court, which has harsher sentencing, with a maximum of five years behind bars. In relation to the alleged public order offence, he could face a term of imprisonment not exceeding 6 months, a fine of up to €500 or both. Lincoln is best known for playing the fictional role of Kem in hit telly crime series Kin, which was filmed in Ireland and first aired on RTE. ‘Dublin torture gang burnt me and beat me, then stopped to order chips'
Natalie Ennis tells of callous gang's abuse Natalie Ennis was taken by a gang of men to a flat in Henrietta House in Dublin 7 in September last year after she was falsely blamed for missing drugs. Five gang members were jailed last week for between eight and 14 years for the depraved attack on the 38-year-old mother of one. In an interview in the Sunday Independent, she said during her harrowing ordeal her attackers were 'all ordering chippers for themselves' and going to the shops for bottles of coke and Lucozade. 'It's something I live with every day. You are talking to me now and I can still see it happen to me,' she said. He had a gash on his face and that's when I knew there was something wrong,' she said. She was driven to Henrietta House in the north inner city, and to a squalid flat. She was whacked across the head with metal bars, a hammer was heated up and pressed against her bare skin. She was repeatedly kicked her in the face and had a hatchet held to her head. One of her attackers looked up her personal details on Facebook, looked up her family, and threatened to rape her daughter, who was just 17. Ms Ennis, who had been pummelled, slashed and burnt, found the courage to speak out: 'I said youse won't be doing nothing to my daughter. You'll do it to me,' she said. 'Jesus. That got me big time.' Ms Ennis believed she was going to die. 'In my head, I was going to ask them could I just ring and say goodbye to my Ma and my daughter,' she said. Out of nowhere, armed gardaí rammed open the door and swarmed the flat. By coincidence, they were coincidentally executing a warrant relating to a completely different matter. Ms Ennis spent weeks in hospital with severe injuries including burns, severe bruising, fractures to her cheekbone and eye socket, a broken nasal bone, broken elbow. She had to have spinal surgery to have a disc removed. She was 'terrified' when she was discharged because she had nowhere to go, and has been living for the last 10 months in a crisis accommodation centre for woman escaping domestic violence run by Sonas. Apart from ongoing pain and medical issues, she said she is constantly terrified and suffers night terrors. Natalie Ennis stood up to the torturers' threats against her daughter 'I barely go outside the door. When I do it's in a taxi. I'm afraid of every fella that walks by me,' she said. 'I don't feel safe once I leave this building. This is my safe place.' Having waited 10 months for a psychiatric appointment, she was finally given one on Friday, the day after she was interviewed on RTE's Prime Time. Braxton Rice (21), was sentenced to 14 years in jail. Mark McMahon (55) was jailed for 12 years. His son, 33-year-old Mark Keogh, was jailed for nine. Sean Conroy (21), from Ballymun, was jailed for 12 years. Kian Walshe (22) from Dublin 7 was jailed for eight-and-a-half years. The men apologised to Ms Ennis, and one wrote to her.
