Man detained after breaking armrest off ancient throne in Vietnam
The throne dates back to the Nguyen Dynasty, the last royal dynasty of Vietnam, which lasted from 1802 to 1945.
The Nguyen Dynasty established the city of Hue, in the center of the country, as the capital of Vietnam when it was in power, according to UNESCO. The city's monuments, which include several royal palaces, ritual sites and tombs, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The throne that was broken on Saturday was located inside Hue's Thái Hòa Palace, the city's 'most important structure,' where emperors held court and royal ceremonies were conducted, according to Vietnam News.
Shortly after 12 p.m. on Saturday (1 a.m. ET), a man showing 'signs of severe intoxication' entered a roped-off restricted area of the palace and climbed up onto the throne, Vietnam News reported. He then 'shouted incoherently' and broke the left armrest of the ceremonial chair, the state news website said.
A photograph posted by Nhân Dân, the official newspaper of the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam, shows a part of the armrest that featured a dragon's head lying on the floor. Two other fragments of the armrest are lying beside it.
The man that broke the throne has been sent for a psychiatric assessment, Vietnam News reported, due to his 'unstable mental state' which included 'delusions and incoherent speech.'
Security measures are being tightened across the entire complex of monuments, 'with an emphasis on the protection of artifacts and national treasures,' the state news website added.

Mpumalanga police are probing the death of a man who was involved in a collision with another vehicle. This follows claims that the police assaulted the man at the scene of the crash. 'An internal investigation has been launched immediately, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has also been notified and is conducting its own probe,' he added. Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, said the police were committed to transparency and accountability. 'It is imperative that we uphold the highest standards of integrity within our ranks. Should it be established that SAPS members are implicated in the victim's death, there will be no leniency. 'We will pursue criminal charges against anyone found to have violated the code of conduct. Our aim is to ensure accountability and restore the community's trust in the police service,' Mkhwanazi added.

Man takes own life outside childcare centre
A community is reeling after a man took his own life outside a Queensland childcare centre, where six children were awaiting pickup by their parents. Emergency services were called to a disturbance at Habitat Early Learning centre in Peregian Springs on the Sunshine Coast around 6pm on Monday. On arrival, police said they had located a 28-year-old man who had forced entry to the premises, was self-harming, and sustained serious injuries as a result. 'Officers attempted to negotiate with the man before taking him into custody,' a police spokesman said. 'The man became unresponsive soon after. 'Attending police rendered first aid before other emergency services arrived, however he was declared dead a short time later.' The man's death is currently being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner, and could be looked into by the Crime and Corruption Commission. A spokesman for the childcare centre told the Courier Mail six children were inside the premises at the time, alongside five staff. 'The offender was unable to gain immediate access to the centre due to security measures including fingerprint scanners, and this allowed our staff the time to follow their safety protocols and hide everyone in a secure location,' they said. 'The offender was not known to any staff or our families. 'None of the children witnessed the offender after his initial attempts to enter the building.' Queensland Education minister John Paul Langbroek, when asked about the event at an unrelated press conference shortly after, declared it was 'a horrendous issue that I've only just been advised of'. 'I'm sure that for many of those students and teachers, it's a particularly traumatic experience they've gone through,' he said.
