Bluey: Australian cartoon tops US streaming charts for 2024
US viewers watched 55.62bn minutes of the 7-minute show on Disney+ according to Nielsen's reporting, just shy of the all-time yearly record of 57.7bn minutes set by Suits in 2023.
The Nielsen numbers cap a massive year for Bluey, which never fell off the top ten on streaming charts and ended 2024 by announcing a full-length movie, due to hit cinemas in 2027.
It was bittersweet news for fans, with the show's creator, Brisbane animator Joe Brumm, revealing in a blogpost soon after the announcement that while he would write and direct the movie adaptation, he was stepping away from the TV series. A fourth season has yet to be announced, but when questioned about the show's future last April, Bluey producer Sam Moor told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'It is not the end for Bluey. I'm sure we have many more surprises in store for you.'
A spokesperson for ABC (who originally co-commissioned the series with BBC, and who is the Australian streamer) also confirmed: 'We have no plans to end the show.'
A fair chunk of Bluey's extraordinary 2024 streaming numbers can be attributed to its hugely popular season three finale The Sign, a 28-minute special episode released in April. According to Disney+, the Sign drew 10.4m views globally in its first seven days of availability, making it the most-viewed Disney Junior episode premiere ever.
The storyline, in which the family of blue heelers prepare for the wedding of Uncle Rad while struggling with the decision to sell their home and move to another city, captured the hearts of parents and kids. In Australia, it even spawned three special-edition Bluey-themed $1 coins.
Bluey's Nielsen numbers reflect a broader trend in streaming: the dominance of 'library series'. As in 2023, the top 10 titles in Nielsen's 2024 year-end chart are all long-running shows with huge back catalogues. Grey's Anatomy finished second with 47.85bn minutes, with other top 10 contenders including Family Guy, NCIS and Law & Order: SVU.
The Netflix series Bridgerton was the top original series of 2024, with 21.42bn minutes of viewing, concentrated around the release of season three in May and June. Prime Video's Fallout, with 11.95bn minutes, was the top new series.

George Lucas makes Comic-Con debut for Lucas Museum of Narrative Art
SAN DIEGO, July 27 (Reuters) - Excited fans waved glowing "Star Wars" lightsabers on Sunday at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for George Lucas' latest project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Along with Lucas, the panel included director Guillermo del Toro and Doug Chiang, vice president of Disney's (DIS.N), opens new tab Lucasfilm, with Queen Latifah moderating at the San Diego Convention Center. Attendees shouted "Lucas! Lucas! Lucas!" and clapped their hands in anticipation of the "Star Wars" creator's arrival, and gave the 81-year-old Lucas a standing ovation as he took his seat. "Opening in 2026, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a first-of-its-kind institution dedicated to illustrated storytelling across time, cultures, and media," a press release from the museum said. The 11-acre campus, in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, will include a green space and a 300,000-square-foot building with galleries, two theaters, a library, restaurant, café, and retail and community spaces. Some of its collection will include art from comic book artist Jack Kirby, painter Norman Rockwell and illustrator Kadir Nelson, as well as a Lucas archive with models, props, concept art and costumes. "I love all art, no matter what it is," Lucas said after showing a video that gave a sneak peek at the museum. The video included renderings of the museum interior and exterior, as well as the museum's broad range of art ranging from more traditional fine art and comic book strips to "Star Wars" sculptures and installations. Lucas began the panel recalling his days as a college student struggling to pursue his dream of becoming an art collector due to the steep cost of fine art. But the filmmaker found an affordable exception with comic books, sold cheaply in "underground" markets. Now, rather than selling art he collected over around 50 years, Lucas said he prefers to create what he calls a "temple to the people's art." Lucas kept the conversation focused on the museum and did not discuss "Star Wars" or "Indiana Jones." For del Toro, the museum offers a visual past that belongs to everyone" and can't be erased, noting that he may move some of his personal art collection to the Lucas Museum. Part of the liberation that comes with narrative art for the "Pan's Labyrinth" director also means that art can't be made with a computer app, as it lacks "personality and knowledge."

Two ‘incredible' new professional dancers join Strictly Come Dancing cast
American-born Alexis Warr and Australian-born Julian Caillon will join the hit dance competition series as it returns to BBC One and iPlayer this autumn. Warr, who is best known for winning the US dance series So You Think You Can Dance in 2022 and was crowned America's favourite dancer, became the first female ballroom and Latin dancer to claim the title. On joining Strictly Come Dancing, Warr said: 'I've admired Strictly for years, so joining this incredible family is such an honour. 'I can't wait to step into the ballroom, pour my heart into every moment, and share my love of dance with the UK.' Caillon, who specialises in ballroom and Latin American, has appeared as a professional dancer for three seasons of Australia's version of Strictly Come Dancing, titled Australia's Dancing With The Stars. He said: 'Joining the cast of Strictly really is a dream come true. 'I've watched it for years, especially cheering on all the amazing dancers I know and work with who've been part of it. 'I can't wait to get stuck in, have some fun, and be part of something special!' The newcomers will join the current cast of professional dancers, which includes Dianne Buswell, Nadiya Bychkova, Amy Dowden, Karen Hauer and Katya Jones. Neil Jones will also return in the autumn along with Nikita Kuzmin, Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk and Jowita Przystal. The new series, hosted by recent MBE recipients, Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, will also welcome back Johannes Radebe, Aljaz Skorjanec, Kai Widdrington, Nancy Xu, Carlos Gu, Lauren Oakley, Michelle Tsiakkas and Vito Coppola. Rebel Wilson devastated by second loss months after grandfather died
Rebel Wilson took to social media this weekend to commemorate her late grandmother who passed away at the impressive age of 95 - and who joined the star at her wedding last year Rebel Wilson has been left heartbroken by the death of her beloved grandmother - just months after her grandfather passed away. The Pitch Perfect star shared touching details of her grandmother Gar's life. Taking to social media on Sunday, Rebel, 45, shared a montage of images of her grandmother - sound tracked by the song Somewhere Over The Rainbow, sung by Judy Garland. The song choice had special meaning which gave insight into her grandmother's mischievous personality. Rebel wrote: "Goodbye to my incredible Grandma Gar - the BEST grandmother ever. She passed away at 95 years old." She continued: "Her favourite movie was The Wizard of Oz because when she was a young girl she was banned by her father from seeing it for being 'naughty' but years later finally got to watch it." Rebel then revealed that her grandmother was deeply proud of her and the acting career she carved out for herself. She explained: "She used to keep a scrapbook of news clippings of my career because she was so proud and even last night was telling paramedics about me as she was being taken to hospital - recounting her glorious holiday on the Queen Mary that I had given her as a present when I had started making it big in Hollywood." The Australian actress went on: "When I was 11 she took me and my sister to America - it was one of the best week's of my entire life. We took her on SPACE MOUNTAIN at Disneyland saying 'it's not that scary Gar!' and she screamed the entire way down holding on for dear life. I'm glad her last 'big' outing was to our wedding at the Opera House." She continued: "She loved watching tennis, musicals, neenish tarts, but most importantly she LOVED her family - her children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren. She leaves behind an incredible legacy. She had a hair salon back in the day when few women owned businesses. She endured so much in her life and was always so kind and sweet. To me she is a Queen and I proudly carry her royal name of Elizabeth." And she concluded: "Love you Gar and love to all my family at this very sad time." The tragic news came months after Rebel revealed how delighted she and her now wife, Ramona Agruma, 40, were able to welcome Gar to their wedding last year. Rebel wrote in an Instagram post last December: "My sister Liberty officiated our legal wedding in Sydney! It meant my 94 year old grandmother Gar could come which was very special to us to have her included and just felt right to do it in my hometown at this glorious time of the year." Rebel's grandfather, who she affectionately called Poppy, died in December last year. She shared a photo of herself with her relative on Instagram Stories at the time along with a message stating: "RIP Poppy – 97 years young. The best grandpa!"
