Piyush Goyal holds trade talks with EU Commissioner
New Delhi: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, held a key meeting with European Union Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maros Sefcovic, in Brussels to discuss the progress of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to concluding the long-awaited trade deal by the end of 2025.
Goyal described the dialogue as "highly productive," saying that it helped redefine the India-EU partnership.
The meeting focused on enhancing market access for businesses in both regions and strengthening trusted, diversified supply chains.
The discussions aimed to ensure that the FTA would not only be strategic but also mutually beneficial for the sustainable development of both economies.
In a social media post on 'X', Goyal said, "Redefining the India-EU Partnership, In my highly productive dialogue with EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security @MarosSefcovic today, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to concluding the India-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations by the end of 2025."
He emphasized that the agreement would boost innovation, improve competitiveness, and support future-ready investments and mobility between India and the EU.
Both parties underlined the importance of a fair and comprehensive agreement that supports shared prosperity.
They also highlighted the role of leadership from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in moving the talks forward.
The minister said, "Both India and EU, under the leadership of PM @NarendraModiji and EU President @VonderLeyen, remain committed to working towards a mutually beneficial and strategic agreement for shared prosperity and sustainable development of our regions".
The India-EU FTA has been under negotiation for several years. If concluded, it would be one of India's most significant trade pacts, opening up major opportunities for exporters, investors, and workers from both regions.
The meeting in Brussels signals a renewed push from both sides to overcome remaining challenges and finalize the agreement within the proposed timeline.

The new deal with India is expected to increase bilateral trade by over £25 billion every year, UK GDP by £4.8 billion, and wages by £2.2 billion each year in the long run, putting money back in the pockets of working people. The Foreign Secretary will also welcome progress in our migration partnership, including ongoing work on safeguarding citizens and securing borders in both countries. Urban consumer confidence shows stable sentiments, expects brighter outlook: RBI survey
Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India's Urban Consumer Confidence Survey (UCCS) for May 2025 indicates that consumer sentiments regarding the current economic situation have remained largely stable compared to March, supported by slight improvements in areas such as employment and prices, though these still remain in the negative zone. According to the survey data, the overall Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) registered a marginal decline, dipping slightly from 95.5 in March to 95.4 in May 2025. This reflects a minor weakening in current consumer sentiment. However, expectations for the future have improved notably. The survey findings stated that the people are more optimistic about the economic outlook, employment prospects, income levels, and their ability to spend. This growing optimism pushed the Future Expectations Index (FEI) up by 1 point, from 122.4 in March to 123.4 in May. The RBI conducted the survey between May 2 and May 11, covering 6,090 respondents across 19 major Indian cities. The survey highlights how urban households perceive the present economic environment and what they anticipate for the coming year. A key takeaway from the survey is the growing optimism among urban households regarding inflation and price levels. This is the second consecutive round where concerns about high prices have declined. Looking ahead, most respondents expect inflation and prices to ease further. RBI said "Pessimism about the current price level and inflation continued to ease for the second consecutive round. Households also expect a decline in both price and inflationary pressures over the coming year." Although consumers did not report a major change in their current income levels, there is strong optimism about future earnings. "Households remain firmly optimistic on future earnings even though their sentiment on current earnings remained around its March 2025 level," the RBI added. Spending patterns also reflect this cautious optimism. While current spending, both on essential and non-essential items, has seen a slight dip compared to March, expectations for future spending have improved. In summary, the survey revealed that while consumers feel only slightly better about present conditions, they are significantly more confident and hopeful about the year ahead.
