Google's New AI Mode Will Let You Try on Clothes While You Shop Online
The company detailed its new AI Mode for shopping at its annual I/O developers conference Tuesday. That includes an improved conversational shopping experience, a checkout feature that allows you to buy when prices are best and the ability to upload a picture of yourself to "try on" clothes you find online.

These new features come less than a month after OpenAI introduced shopping features in ChatGPT Search, a move that appeared to show OpenAI trying to compete more directly with Google's search and shopping features.
The "try on" feature is available starting immediately in Search Labs in the US. It builds on existing "try on" technology, but instead of using a mock-up body type, you can upload a picture of yourself and see what the clothes would look like on you. The function works with shirts, pants, skirts and dresses.
During a live demo, Vidhya Srinivasan, Google's vice president and general manager for ads and commerce, said the company built a custom image generation model specifically for fashion. "To create a try on experience that works at scale, we need a deep understanding of the human body and how clothing works on it," she said.
The AI Mode shopping experience, expected to launch in the coming months, is designed to be more conversational. You'll be able to chat with the AI tool to get more inspiration and find the right product from a wide variety of retailers. Google said its Shopping Graph -- its database of products and retailers online -- now has 50 billion product listings, with more than 2 billion being updated every hour. AI Mode will be able to offer you personalized responses to your queries and then allow you to narrow them down based on your more specific requests. A new right-hand panel in the Shopping Graph will update as you narrow your request.
A new checkout feature, debuting in the coming months, will let you track the price or allow you to look for a specific product at a certain price. You can get notifications for when prices drop and confirm when you're ready to actually buy the product. Google's AI agent will complete the checkout on your behalf through Google Pay.
Google's shopping features will also be able to, for example, track down event tickets across different sites to find the best deal, without you having to search dozens of times for the right site.

Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures mixed as investors count down to Powell's speech
US stock futures were mixed as Wall Street readied for the main event of the week: Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium in Wyoming. Futures attached to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F), the benchmark S&P 500 (ES=F), and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 (NQ=F) ticked up 0.1%. Stocks swung last week as Fed policy predictions shifted. After July's Consumer Price Index (CPI) report showed inflation had increased at a pace that was in-line with analysts' expectations, rate-cut bets surged, sparking a two-day stock rally. However, a second check on inflation that week, July's Producer Price Index report, came in hotter-than-expected and abruptly threw cold water on rate-cut hopes and stocks' march higher. This week, more signs that a rate cut may not be imminent piled up. Minutes from the Federal Reserve's last meeting showed that the two officials who dissented from the decision to hold rates steady in July were largely alone in their opinion. The minutes also indicated inflation was more of a concern for officials than labor market weakness. Finally, two policymakers, Jeffrey Schmid and Beth Hammack, expressed wariness over a September rate cut on Thursday. Meanwhile, President Trump has continued a pressure campaign on the Federal Reserve, publicly bashing Powell and, more recently, calling for the resignation of Fed governor Lisa Cook for alleged mortgage fraud. His tariff policy also continues to evolve with its ultimate impact on inflation difficult to predict. Against this backdrop, Powell's speech has investors on edge. His remarks are set to not only shake up rate-cut bets but also shape monetary policy for years to come. Amid the countdown to his Jackson Hole remarks, stocks slipped on Thursday. Disappointing Walmart (WMT) earnings and hotter-than-expected jobless claims data contributed to a dip in sentiment. In after-hours trading, corporate earnings led to some companies seeing swings in their stock prices. Zoom (ZM) popped on an AI boost, and Ross Stores (ROST) jumped as shoppers seek discounts amid tariffs. Intuit (INTU) and Workday (WDAY), meanwhile, tumbled. OpenAI says HR chief Julia Villagra is leaving company
OpenAI's human resources chief, Julia Villagra, is leaving the company, CNBC has confirmed. It's the latest high-profile shakeup at the artificial intelligence startup, which is aggressively hiring AI talent as it faces heightened competition from Google, Meta, Anthropic and others. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced Villagra's promotion to the role of chief people officer in March. She joined the company last year and is set to leave on Friday. Reuters was firs to report her pending departure, which the company confirmed to CNBC. Villagra's exit comes just months after longtime Meta executive and former Instacart CEO Fidji Simo joined the company in a senior capacity and began taking on a more active role across OpenAI's consumer and product initiatives. In recent months, OpenAI has deepened its push beyond the ChatGPT chatbot and into enterprise. The company is also in the process of restructuring into a public benefit corporation to meet a key stipulation of its SoftBank-led $40 billion fundraising round. Altman said in June that Meta has tried to poach OpenAI employees by offering signing bonuses as high as $100 million, with even larger annual compensation packages. Meta technology chief Andrew Bosworth said OpenAI countered Meta's offers.
