India's poverty rate likely to decline further to 4.6% in 2024 from 5.3% in 2023: SBI Report

India Gazette19 hours ago

New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): India's poverty continues to decline steadily, with the poverty rate likely to fall to 4.6 per cent in 2024, estimates a recent report by the State Bank of India (SBI).
This marks a significant improvement from the 5.3 per cent poverty rate estimated by the World Bank for India in 2023.
The report said 'Poverty estimates by SBI and World Bank are remarkably similar.... SBI estimates it at 4.6 per cent in 2024...down from 5.3 per cent in 2023 as estimated by World Bank'.
The report highlighted that the country has made remarkable progress in reducing poverty, and its latest estimate shows a further fall from the World Bank's assessment.
The decline in poverty is largely supported by new methods of data collection and updated definitions. India's recent Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) adopted the Modified Mixed Recall Period (MMRP) method, replacing the older Uniform Reference Period (URP).
As per report, this new method uses shorter recall periods for items that are purchased more frequently, providing a more accurate picture of household consumption.
As a result, recorded consumption in national surveys have gone up, which in turn has lowered the estimated poverty levels. For instance, in 2011-12, using MMRP reduced India's poverty rate from 22.9 per cent to 16.22 per cent under the older USD 2.15 per day poverty line.
In the 2022-23 survey, poverty stood at just 5.25 per cent under the new hiked USD 3.00 per day poverty line, and even lower at 2.35 per cent under the old USD 2.15 line.
The World Bank recently revised the global poverty line from USD 2.15 per day (2017 PPP) to USD 3.00 per day (2021 PPP), which initially increased the global count of people in extreme poverty by 226 million.
However, India emerged as a statistical outlier in a positive way. Thanks to its revised consumption data and improved survey methods, India's updated figures actually helped reduce the global poverty count by 125 million.
The SBI report noted that recent estimates for India's poverty ratio are comparable with World Bank's numbers, after making adjustments for differences in methodology and definitions.
The continued fall in India's poverty rate highlights the success of its economic reforms, targeted welfare schemes, and improved data systems. (ANI)

Gold price today: Rates climb ahead of US inflation data; experts highlight key levels for MCX Gold

Gold price today: Gold rates climbed in the domestic futures market Wednesday morning as uncertainty over the US-China trade deal persisted. MCX Gold August 5 contracts traded 0.35 per cent higher at ₹ 97,240 per 10 grams around 9:25 AM. Reuters reported, quoting US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, saying on Tuesday that the "US and Chinese officials agreed on a framework to put their trade truce back on track and resolve China's export restrictions on rare earth minerals and magnets." Lutnick said the US team will show the plan to President Donald Trump for approval before putting it into action. The Chinese team will do the same by getting approval from President Xi Jinping, Reuters reported. While both countries have reached a preliminary agreement on a framework to ease trade tensions, there was uncertainty surrounding the final shape of the deal, which supported safe-haven demand. Investors' focus now is on the US consumer price index (CPI) prints, due today, to get cues about the US Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory. Even though the US economy is showing signs of slowdown, experts believe the US Fed may not cut rates for the next few months due to prevailing risks of inflation amid a trade war. Meanwhile, the World Bank on Tuesday trimmed the world growth forecast by 0.4 percentage points to 2.3 per cent for 2025. The World Bank said on Tuesday that the global economy faces significant headwinds from escalating trade tensions and policy uncertainty, leading to a downgrade in prospects across most nations. It expects the Indian economy to grow slightly faster at 6.5 per cent in FY27 and 6.7 per cent in FY28. (This is a developing story. Please check back for fresh updates.)

TN eyes schemes with USD 410mn funding from World Bank

CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday said the state will be implementing several schemes with additional funding of USD 410 million from World Bank through loans. He said this after inaugurating the Bank's expanded Global Business Centre in Taramani in Chennai which is now its largest office outside Washington. Stalin said the funds would support a range of important schemes, including WE-SAFE, a new initiative focused on women's employment and safety, the Tamil Nadu Sustainably Harnessing Ocean Resources and Blue Economy (TN-SHORE) project and the second phase of the Tamil Nadu Pudhu Vazhvu project, aimed at rural development and poverty reduction. He said seven major programmes with World Bank's funding of a total of USD 1.12 billion is currently under implementation, which act as an example of long, sustained collaboration. He views the state's relationship with World Bank as extending far beyond conventional financial support, the CM said. 'This is not just about loans — it is a partnership in technology, policy-making, and knowledge,' he noted. Stressing on the need for World Bank's support in Tamil Nadu becoming a USD 1 trillion economy by 2030, measures to address climate change, and achieve Sustainable Development Goals, Stalin, however, said there are also some challenges involved.

Piyush Goyal says Swiss part of EFTA deal will possibly be implemented from October 2025 — all you need to know

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal indicated on Wednesday that the Swiss part of the EFTA will possibly be implemented from October 2025, with the other three countries -- Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway-- already having ratified the trade deal. "Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland have reified this agreement. Switzerland's process will last another two and a half months (or so). It is expected that we will be able to implement this in October," the minister told ANI, during his two-day visit to Switzerland. On the second day of his visit, he addressed a gathering of over 1,000 Swiss businesses, accompanied by Swiss Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin. Goyal highlighted India's "remarkable transformation" over the past 11 years in terms of technology, innovation and how the country offers great avenues for doing business. He also encouraged Swiss industry and businesses to explore unparalleled opportunities for growth and investment in India, leveraging India's skilled and talented workforce and facilitative business ecosystem. "We expect an investment of USD 100 dollars (into India) to come from these countries, because they have committed under the EFTA," the minister said. The negotiations between EFTA and India started in 2008, 21 rounds of negotiations were needed to reach an agreement on 10 March 2024, as per EFTA website. EFTA is an inter-governmental organization set up in 1960 for the promotion of free trade and economic integration for the benefit of its four Member States. "There is a possibility of investment in many sectors, be it space sectors, high precision engineering or food processing or pharmaceutical. I think that India will be able to take full advantage of the technology that Switzerland has achieved. We have skills and talent. Our expenses are low," he supplemented. Asserting that Switzerland being a high per capita income country, anything manufactured in that country would be difficult to market them in other countries with relatively lower income. Against that backdrop, he said, "India will prove to be a very reliable partner for them." Speaking about other ongoing trade deal negotiations, the minister said that a very good progress has been made with the EU. "Three round of discussion at ministerial level between May 1 to June 3 have happened, in just thirty to thirty-five days we have met thrice," GOyal said. "My counter part (Maros Sefcovic, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security) is coming down to India on June 28-29, possibly about last second Last round of discussion and teams are discussing from sixteenth onwards in Delhi. Around is going on we have intersessional round through video conferencing very very very active negotiations are underway through," he said. With Oman, India has made significant progress, he apprised. "With New Zealand, we wish to conclude quickly, but we have a bandwidth problem, the Commerce Ministry is over stretched," he said. "We are working with the United States so there was a commitment given to us by Leaders President Trump and Prime Minister Modi have a bilateral trade agreement one by fall (by Sep 2025. Discussions with Peru and Chile are progressing well so effectively the ministry is fully engaged today with discussions with all continents across the world thank you," he concluded.
