Man is gunned down in 'drive-by shooting' at petrol station: Police hunting killer in 'stolen car'

Daily Mail18 hours ago
Police are hunting for a murderer after a man was gunned down in a 'drive by shooting' at a petrol station.
The victim was shot near a petrol station on Doncaster Road, Wakefield at around 9.45pm on Tuesday.
Police believe the vehicle used was on 'false plates and was stolen in a burglary in Castleford on August 3'.
The victim was rushed to hospital where he died from his injuries.
He is understood to be a 50-year-old man who was living in the local area.
The man's immediate family are aware and are being offered support by specially trained officers.
Officers said the vehicle involved is believed to be a blue/grey-coloured Toyota RAV4 with a grey trim, displaying cloned plates FV53FXT.
The vehicle is described as being 'distinctive due to having bull lights on the roof above the windshield'.
Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle, of West Yorkshire Police's homicide and major inquiry team, said: 'A man has lost his life, and it is an absolute priority for us to understand the circumstances of what has taken place and identify anyone who has had any involvement in this incident.
'We understand that the vehicle used in this offence was on false plates and was stolen in a burglary in Castleford on 3 August.
'The vehicle is particularly distinctive because of the bull lights fitted to the vehicle.
'We are interested in speaking to anyone who believes they have seen this RAV4 following this burglary, around the time of this offence and since.
'The vehicle may now be displaying different plates.
'Motorists who were in the Doncaster Road area last night who have dashcams fitted are also asked to check whether they have captured any footage of this vehicle.
'The driver was driving in the direction of Wakefield before they have turned around near the BP petrol station immediately prior to the shooting and then driven off in the direction they came from.
'We understand the shock and concern that an incident of this nature will cause, particularly given that a firearm has been involved.
'We are dedicating significant resources to this investigation and our neighbourhood policing colleagues are supporting this with an increased presence in the area to provide reassurance to the community.'
Anyone who witnessed any part of the incident or who has any information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police's homicide and major inquiry team online

Trial date set for teenagers charged with murder at seaside resort

A trial date has been set for three teenagers who are charged with the murder of a man at a seaside resort. Kent Police were called to the Warden Bay Road area of Leysdown-on-Sea, on the Isle of Sheppey, shortly after 7pm on Sunday, after an altercation involving a small number of people. Alexander Cashford, 49, was confirmed dead at the scene, and police said multiple injuries to his body were reported. A 16-year-old girl and two boys aged 14 and 15, all from London and thought to have been on holiday in Kent at the time of the attack, were charged with murder on Tuesday. On Thursday, a provisional trial date was set at Maidstone Crown Court for January 13 next year. The three are jointly charged with murder after a 'violent assault' took place near the beach in Warden Bay. The defendants, two of whom appeared separately in court on Thursday and spoke only to confirm their names, were accompanied in court by their parents and other family members. The 15-year-old boy is due to appear later. The attack is alleged to have involved a glass bottle and rocks being thrown, the court heard. On Thursday, the prosecution said the cause of Mr Cashford death is currently inconclusive as he seems to have suffered a 'medical episode such as a cardiac arrest could have been brought on by being chased and attacked'. A 12-year-old girl, arrested on Tuesday in Basildon, Essex, has been bailed. The 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been remanded into youth detention accommodation. A plea and trial preparation date has been set for November 6.

Militant attacks on Pakistani police kill 5 as government hunt for insurgents displaces thousands

A series of attacks against Pakistani police by militants left five officers dead and eight wounded in a region where a government operation against insurgents has displaced 100,000 people, officials said. There were four attacks with three resulting in officer casualties Thursday, police said. Most died or were injured in a single attack in the Upper Dir district when armed men ambushed a police van early Thursday. Three officers died and seven were injured during the routine patrol, police official Ismail Khan said. In the Peshawar suburb of Hassan Khel, armed men opened fire on a police station with automatic weapons. One officer died and another was wounded in an exchange of fire, Peshawar Capital City Police Officer Qasim Ali Khan said. Two other overnight attacks came at police checkpoints in the Lajbok area of the Lower Dir district, where a police constable was killed, and in the Bannu district, where there were no casualties reported. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assaults and it was not immediately known if they were connected. Authorities have stepped up security across the country on the country's Independence Day, which was celebrated Thursday. The attacks on police coincided with a security operation to fight militants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province's Bajaur district. There was no formal announcement of the offensive's launch in Bajaur, a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban. Local government administrator Saeed Ullah said it was not a large-scale operation and only insurgent hideouts were targeted to avoid hurting or killing civilians, but the operation has displaced at least 100,000 people and there have been civilian casualties, including deaths. On Thursday, hundreds of people carried black flags and staged a sit-in to protest the killing of a mother and her two children in the district's Inayat Kili area, who died when a mortar struck their home. Authorities are registering displaced families from the Mamund area and setting up camps in public schools and sports complexes. People also have received food and relief packages, Bajaur government official Saeed Khan said. Sitting at a camp for displaced people in Khar, a main city in the Bajur district, Abid Ullah asked the government to quickly finish the operation so he could return home with his family. Shah Mehmood, a resident from the town of Mamund, said that when the operation began, "the war planes came and they were flying above our heads.' Mehmood said he left with with his family members for their safety and still had bitter memories of a similar 2009 military operation that displaced hundreds of thousands in Bajur. Between 500 and 800 militants are hiding in Bajaur, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. Authorities have not shared details of troop or militant casualties in the operation. Anwarullah Khan in Khar, Pakistan, and Rasool Dawar in Peshawar, Pakistan, contributed.
