Chennai Super Kings have announced the inclusion of Urvil Patel as an injury replacement for young wicketkeeper-batsman Vansh Bedi, who has been ruled out of IPL 2025 due to a ligament tear in his left ankle. The announcement comes midway through the season, as CSK continue to deal with multiple injuries within their squad.
22-year-old Vansh Bedi was poised to make his IPL debut against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and had been named in the playing XI. Unfortunately, a last-minute injury forced him out of the game, and Deepak Hooda replaced him. Medical assessment later confirmed a serious ligament tear, ending Bedi's campaign before it began. Prior to the official announcement, a family member of Urvil Patel hinted at his selection through social media. CSK had recently conducted mid-season trials, evaluating players like Urvil, Aman Khan, and Salman Nizar. Former India batter Wasim Jaffer also confirmed that Patel was among those called for trials by CSK.
Urvil Patel, a 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Gujarat, holds the record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian—reaching the milestone in just 28 balls against Tripura in the 2024–25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He scored 315 runs in six games with an average over 78 and a strike rate close to 230. In his overall T20 career, he has tallied 1162 runs in 47 matches, including two centuries.
This is the third time CSK has had to bring in a replacement player this season due to injury. Earlier, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad played just five matches before injury ruled him out, prompting the team to sign 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre. Additionally, South African batter Dewald Brevis was roped in to replace Gurjapneet Singh. Urvil Patel now joins this list of injury-induced additions.
CSK's season has been disappointing, both due to form and fitness issues. With just two wins from eleven matches, they are languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table. The team was officially the first to be knocked out of playoff contention, marking one of their poorest seasons in franchise history.
