Helmet grab sparks chaos in Emerging match

Dhaka, May 28 (UNI) The four-day match between the South Africa Emerging Team and Bangladesh Emerging Team was marred by an ugly on-field scuffle on Wednesday, with South African pacer Tshepo Ntuli physically tugging at the helmet of Bangladeshi batsman Ripon Mondol, twice, even as the umpire tried to intervene.
The shocking incident occurred at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium shortly after Ripon struck Ntuli for a straight six. As he walked over to his batting partner Mehidy Hasan, Ripon appeared to exchange glances with the bowler. Ntuli then charged at him, leading to a heated confrontation.
The two players initially shoved each other before Ntuli grabbed Ripon's helmet. On-field umpire Kamruzzaman stepped in to separate them, but Ntuli again tugged at Ripon's helmet, ignoring the umpire's attempts to calm the situation. The batsman eventually removed his helmet as tensions escalated.
Several South African players on the field did not restrain Ntuli; in fact, a couple of them appeared to charge towards Ripon, further aggravating the situation. The scuffle drew immediate and sharp reactions from the commentary box.
"This is extreme, this is unacceptable. Normally we see verbal altercations on a cricket field but we don't often see a scuffle. Ntuli struck Ripon's helmet at one point," said commentator Nabil Kaiser on air.
The tension did not end there. Just three deliveries after play resumed, Ntuli threw the ball back aggressively at Ripon after the batsman defended it, forcing Ripon to fend it off to avoid being hit.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, no immediate disciplinary action was taken. As per ICC protocol, sanctions can only be announced after the on-field umpires submit an official report. The match referee enjoys the prerogative of filing reports with both the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Cricket South Africa (CSA), with strong disciplinary measures.
This was not the first flashpoint of the tour. Tensions had flared earlier during the one-day series in Rajshahi, where South Africa's Andile Simelane and Bangladesh's Jishan Alam were both suspended after a separate confrontation in the second one-dayer.
The ongoing four-day match is the final game of South Africa Emerging's tour. They lost the one-day series 2–1, while the first four-day match in Chattogram ended in a draw.

South African Batter, Who Plays For LSG, Breaks World Record Of...

Last Updated: Breetzke scored 57 runs for the Proteas in the first ODI against Australia, and his 57-run knock helped him break the world record for scoring the most runs after the first 3 ODIs. South African batter Matthew Breetzke entered his name in the history books on Tuesday (August 19) by breaking the world record for scoring the most runs after the first three ODIs. The 26-year-old right-handed batter, who made his ODI debut for the Proteas against New Zealand on February 10, 2025, at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, went past former England batter Nick Knight's tally of runs. Knight, who made his ODI debut against Pakistan in Manchester on August 29, 1996, amassed a total of 264 runs for the English team in his first three ODIs. Whereas Breetzke has scored 290 runs. The right-handed batter scored 57 runs from 56 balls against Australia on Tuesday in the first ODI of the bilateral series played at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns. In his first two ODI matches, he scored 150 runs against New Zealand and 83 runs against Pakistan in February 2025. The record of scoring the most runs after four ODIs is in the name of South Africa's Temba Bavuma. Bavuma amassed a total of 280 runs after his first four 50-over matches for the Proteas. Even if Breetzke fails to open his account in the next ODI for the Proteas, he will remain ahead of Bavuma. The fifty by Breetzke on Tuesday also helped him become the first South African and overall fourth cricketer in the world to score half-centuries in the first three ODIs. India's Navjot Singh Sidhu was the first cricketer to achieve the feat. In fact, Sidhu crossed the 50-run mark in each of his first four ODI innings, and he was joined by Netherlands batters Tom Cooper in 2010 and Max O'Dowd in 2021. Sidhu made his ODI debut against Australia in Chennai on October 9, 1987, and scored 73 runs in an ODI World Cup match. In his next game he made 75 against New Zealand in Bengaluru. He didn't get a chance to bat in the third ODI against Zimbabwe, but in the fourth match he once again scored 51 runs against Australia in Delhi and then 55 against Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad. In his first three ODIs for the Dutch team, Cooper registered scores of 80*, 87 and 67, whereas Max scored 86*, 59 and 82 runs. Batters to score 50+ runs in first three ODIs Breetzke, who plays for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, also holds the world record for scoring the most runs on ODI debut. On February 10, 2025, he became the first batter in the world to score 150 on ODI debut. view comments First Published: August 19, 2025, 21:26 IST News cricket South African Batter, Who Plays For LSG, Breaks World Record Of... Thirty nine RF athletes aim for glory at National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships

Mumbai, Aug 19 (UNI) A strong contingent of 39 athletes supported by the Reliance Foundation (RF) will look to aim for glory and secure qualification for the World Championships at the 64th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships in Chennai from August 20 to 24. Among the big names in action will be Tejas Shirse (men's 110m hurdles), Manikanta Hoblidhar (men's 100m and 200m), Gurindervir Singh (men's 100m), Amlan Borgohain (men's 100m and 200m), Mohammed Afsal (men's 800m) and Animesh Kujur (men's 200m and 4x100m relay), who continues his red hot form by waltzing to Gold in the 200m event at the inaugural Indian Open World Athletics Continental Tour in Bhubaneswar on August 10. Afsal, who also won Gold in Bhubaneswar while braving diarrhoea, and Tejas are the current national record holders in their respective event. Tejas has been in fine fettle too, clocking his second fastest time ever of 13.51s at the Meeting voor Mon — a World Athletics Challenger level meet — in Belgium over the weekend. Speaking about the significance of the tournament, James Hillier, Athletics Director, Reliance Foundation, said, 'The National Inter State Championships is one of the most important events in the Indian athletics calendar. It is a very high quality competition which serves as a selection trial for the World Championships too. We take this event very seriously and want our athletes to do really well. The facility in Chennai is very good and we're hoping for some good weather and good performances.' With many athletes supported by the Reliance foundation in contention to qualify for the Worlds, Hillier said, 'Gulveer Singh has already qualified and has an exemption from competing in this event. Animesh will aim to dominate the 200m event, where he has been phenomenal all year. He would want to secure his place on the plane to Tokyo. Tejas has had an injury interrupted year but he'll be raring to go after a season best display in Europe. He has an outside chance of making the team for Tokyo.' Among the other medalists from Bhubaneswar who will be looking to back up their feat at the tournament will be Pragyan Sahu (women's 100m hurdles and 4x100m relay) and Lokesh S (men's long jump). Seema, who won a historic medal at the World University Games in the form of a stunning silver in the 5000m event, will be aiming for a 5000m and 10000m double here. The tournament will serve as a key preparation as well as qualification for the World Championships in Tokyo next month. The participation of Reliance Foundation and Odisha HPC athletes underlines the Foundation's long-standing commitment to Indian athletics—nurturing talent, providing access to world-class facilities, coaching and international exposure, and building a holistic ecosystem from grassroots to elite levels. South Africa posted 296-8, the highest ODI total at Cazaly's Stadium, before dismissing Australia for 198 with more than nine overs remaining. Bavuma, playing his first international since South Africa's World Test Championship final victory, struggled initially but found support in Breetzke, who scored freely against Australia's spinners. The middle order saw quick dismissals as Head removed both Tristan Stubbs and debutant Dewald Brevis. Brevis managed a six off his first ODI delivery before falling to the next ball. Wiaan Mulder provided late impetus with a quick 31 off 26 balls. South Africa faced a setback before the match as pace bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out of the ODI series due to ankle inflammation. Kewena Maphaka, the leading wicket-taker in the recent T20 series, replaced him in the squad but didn't play in this match. The victory gave South Africa a 1-0 lead in the three-match series against Australia, who had recently won the T20 series 2-1. This was the first ODI between these teams since Australia's victory in the 2023 World Cup semifinals, as their scheduled Champions Trophy meeting in March was abandoned due to rain.
