Taiping prison officer admits he hit inmates, apologises at Suhakam inquiry

(Facebook pic) Kuala Lumpur: A prison officer has apologised after admitting to hitting inmates during an incident at Taiping prison on Jan 17, saying he lost control after being provoked by insults and threats. Dzulizwar Bakir, who holds the rank of sergeant, said the inmates had hurled vulgarities and threats against the officers' families, which triggered his emotional outburst. '(For) what happened during that incident, I sincerely apologise. I was angry, but I had no intention of injuring or hurting anyone,' Dzulizwar, who was stationed at the prison's main gate, told the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia's (Suhakam) inquiry into the alleged abuse of more than 100 inmates by about 60 wardens during the incident. The commission is investigating claims of brutality that allegedly led to the death of one inmate and injuries to several others. Asked if it was appropriate to use force on inmates simply because they had insulted the prison officers, Dzulizwar replied: 'It's not appropriate.' Earlier, he admitted that he failed to control his emotions after the inmates provoked him and the other officers with explicit words and threats to rape their wives and children. 'If they insulted us, we could still accept it. But it involved family, I couldn't stay quiet,' he said. Asked by Suhakam chairman Hishamudin Yunus whether his actions could be justified under any circumstances, Dzulizwar agreed they could not. He said the inmates' defiance stemmed from their transfer to Block E, which had poorer living conditions, including dirty cells, and the use of bucket toilets, as well as stricter rules. Five-hour closure of Kota Kinabalu bypass this Friday

Kota Kinabalu: The KK bypass, from the Bunga Raya Roundabout to the Costal Roundabout, will be temporarily closed for five hours this Friday (Aug 1), from 6.30am to 11.30am. District Police Chief, ACP Kasim Muda, said the road closure is in conjunction with the National Month Launch, Sabah Day, and the 2025 Flag Raising Campaign. The event is expected to be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, at the Kota Kinabalu Community Hall. The traffic lights at the Dewan involving the route from Capital Roundabout (Bandaran) to Dewan Masyarakat Road will also be closed temporarily. However, he said the route from Capital Roundabout to Bunga Raya Roundabout remains open to other road users. He said Jalan Dewan would also be temporarily closed from the direction of Pintu Gerbang Dirgahayu or from the direction of Padang Merdeka. In addition to the closure of roads on Jalan KK Bypass, roads such as Jalan Coastal will also have traffic control measures in place throughout the duration of the programme to ensure smooth traffic flow around the city centre. Local held for stealing laptop

The arrest, made less than 24 hours after receiving a tip-off, reflects the police's rapid response in combating crime. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was detained around 6.20pm during Ops Bersepadu Cegah Jenayah/Op Kesan. He said the man had been acting suspiciously while carrying a paper bag, prompting police to stop and search him. 'Upon inspection, police recovered a branded laptop bag and its contents, believed reported stolen earlier,' Jasmin said in a statement on Sunday. The suspect reportedly became aggressive and refused to cooperate, forcing officers to use minimal force to subdue him. Further checks revealed his prior criminal record, including drug-related offences. Two men killed and another hurt in Ranau, Kuala Penyu crashes

RANAU: A man was killed while another was injured after a Perodua Kancil collided with a palm fruit-laden lorry here on Sunday. Head of Fire and Rescue Department Rantey Fred said the incident occurred at Km 45, Ranau-Telupid Road at about 1.15pm. In the incident, the victim, Sylvester Pius Gulmit, 42, who was driving Perodua Kancil was confirmed dead when receiving treatment at the Paginatan Health Clinic. A passenger, an 18 -year -old man, suffered minor injuries with scratches and injuries to the body. The victim's car was moving from Telupid to Ranau town. 'We received a call at 1.07pm, and the rescue team reached the location situated 45km away at about 1.54pm. 'Upon arriving at the scene, the car was believed entering the opposite lane before colliding with the lorry in the opposite direction,' he said. Rantey said the victims were sent to the Paginatan Clinic before firefighters arrived. The lorry driver was not at the scene. 'The firefighters cut the battery cable to prevent fire,' he said. Meanwhile, he called on all motorists to be extra careful when driving across the district, especially on narrow and bending village roads. 'People are asked to be more careful when driving in rainy weather conditions as well as damaged or under-repaired roads. 'Always be attentive while on the road and give good cooperation to other road users. Do drive slowly especially when on uneven roads. 'Drive prudently and be sensitive to the surrounding conditions, because we all want to reach our destination safely and meet our beloved family,' he said. In KUALA PENYU, a 41-year-old man died after being hit by a Toyota Hilux in a three-vehicle accident on Sunday. Kuala Penyu District Police Chief Supt Wong Leong Ming said initial investigations showed that the Hilux had veered into the opposite lane, colliding with the victim's motorcycle before sideswiping another oncoming vehicle. 'The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel,' he said, adding that the body was sent to the Kuala Penyu Hospital for further action. He urged road users to exercise caution, adhere to traffic laws and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before driving. 'Check your tires, brakes and signal lights beforehand. If there are issues, avoid using the vehicle to prevent accidents,' he said.
