Modi accuses Opposition of maintaining unjust, regressive laws while in power

Synopsis Prime Minister Modi criticized opposition leaders, accusing them of hypocrisy by upholding unjust laws while feigning constitutional allegiance. He highlighted a repealed law allowing jailing of sanitation workers for minor infractions, exposing past mistreatment. Modi emphasized the BJP's commitment to Delhi-NCR's development, contrasting it with opposition parties' inability to accept the BJP's success and their divisive politics. ANI Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday took a swipe at Opposition leaders, saying that those "who dance with a copy of Constitution on their head" had maintained unjust and regressive laws while in power, trampling the spirit of the Constitution. Addressing an event in the national capital after inaugurating two expressways, the prime minister also said that opposition parties have not been able to digest the success of BJP in Delhi and its adjoining states of Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. He said: "Ye jo log samvidhan sar par rakh kar naachte hain na, woh samvidhan ko kaise kuchalte the, woh Baba Saheb (Ambedkar) ke bhavna ko kaise daga dete the, woh sachai main batane jaa raha hoon. (Those people who are dancing with a copy of Constitution on their heads, how they used to trample the Constitution and betray B R Ambedkar ideas, I am going to tell you the truth now.)" "You will be astonished after hearing this. Our sanitation workers in Delhi are fulfilling huge responsibilities. We should thank them every morning. "Earlier governments used to treat them like slaves," he said, adding that there was a provision in the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act that sanitation workers could be jailed for a month on failure to report for duty without prior notice. "What they used to think about sanitation workers? You will put them in jail for a small mistake," Modi asked. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition party members are often seen carrying a copy of Constitution, swearing to protect it from the onslaught of the ruling BJP. The Opposition parties which now talk big things about social justice had enacted many such rules and laws in the country, Modi said, adding that the government is identifying and repealing such regressive laws. The government has already repealed hundreds of such laws, and the process is continuing, the prime minister said. During his speech, Modi also highlighted the unique alignment wherein BJP governments are currently in place in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. He said this reflects the immense blessings the entire region has bestowed upon their party and its leadership. Modi emphasised that recognizing this responsibility, the government is fully committed to the development of Delhi-NCR. He pointed out that certain political parties are still unable to accept the public's mandate. He stated that these parties have distanced themselves from both public trust and ground realities. Recalling how, a few months ago, conspiracies were hatched to pit the people of Delhi and Haryana against each other, the prime minister mentioned that false claims were made alleging that Haryana residents were poisoning Delhi's water supply. He asserted that Delhi and the entire NCR have now been freed from such negative politics.

Free Tibet leads campaign against Chinas Mega-Embassy plans in London

London [UK], August 17 (ANI): Opposition is mounting against China's controversial plans to build a so-called 'mega-embassy" at the historic Royal Mint Court site in central London, with campaigners warning that it will be used to 'monitor and harass" those against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), including members of the Tibetan community in a series of posts on X, London-based group Free Tibet revealed that while the UK government had previously appeared ready to approve the embassy, fresh questions are now being raised over its scale, secrecy, and implications for residents. One of its posts stated that protests under the banner 'No Mega-Embassy" have brought parts of London to a standstill, with demonstrators spilling onto major junctions and blocking traffic for hours. Those opposed to the project include Tibetans, Uyghurs, Hong Kongers, Mongolians, Taiwanese, and Chinese dissidents, alongside Tower Hamlets residents, local councillors, MPs, and members of the law enforcement community. 'China's proposed 'mega-embassy' in London is more than an oversized diplomatic building; it is a multi-dimensional threat," Free Tibet said in one of its posts. 'With key details of its plans redacted, there is a real risk that the site will be used to monitor and harass those who speak out against the CCP, including members of the Tibetan community in Britain", the post said. Free Tibet argued that the mega embassy would significantly expand Beijing's capacity for surveillance, intimidation, and repression on British soil. Since 2019, Tibetan activists working closely with allied groups have been 'front and centre in the fight against the CCP's expansion into the very heart of London," the organisation Tibet called for a 'big push" protest against the project, urging communities to gather in London to prevent what it described as a dangerous foothold for the Chinese Communist occupied Tibet in 1950, sparking decades of resistance. Tibetans face repression of religion, culture, and speech, while Beijing tightens control. Exiled Tibetans worldwide continue demanding freedom, rights, and self-determination. (ANI)

European leaders to join Ukraine's Zelenskyy for Trump meet

ANI European leaders to join Ukraine's Zelenskyy for Trump meeting European leaders will join Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his crucial meeting with President Donald Trump, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday. The move in relation to the key White House meeting on Monday is an apparent effort to prevent a repeat of the heated encounter Zelenskyy faced when he met Trump in February. The European leaders' presence at Zelenskyy's side, demonstrating Europe's support for Ukraine, could potentially help ease concerns in Kyiv and in other European capitals that Zelenskyy risks being railroaded into a peace deal that Trump says he wants to broker with Russia. Von der Leyen, head of the European Union's executive branch, posted on X that "at the request of President Zelenskyy, I will join the meeting with President Trump and other European leaders in the White House tomorrow."
