Youcef Belaïli Released After In-Flight Dispute

Morocco World2 days ago
Algerian international Youcef Belaïli was briefly detained by French police on Wednesday following an incident aboard an Air France flight returning from New York.
The 33-year-old winger was taken into custody at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport after reportedly refusing to fasten his young son's seatbelt during the flight. The disagreement escalated, prompting staff to call for police intervention upon landing.
Belaïli was questioned at a nearby police station and released in the afternoon. French authorities deemed the case a minor infraction and did not proceed with formal charges.
Following his release, Belaïli posted a photo of the flight crew on Instagram, writing: 'Algerian and proud, you bastards.'
His father, Hafid Belaïli, defended him in an interview with the Algerian media outlet Ennahar, saying that his son was humiliated by the French police.
Videos circulating on social media show the player being handcuffed and escorted to the police station.
The Algerian winger, who previously played for Angers, Brest, and Ajaccio in Ligue 1, recently featured for Espérance Sportive de Tunis in the Club World Cup in the United States. EST were eliminated after defeats to Flamengo and Chelsea, with Belaïli scoring the team's only goal of the tournament.

Hamdallah Out of Al-Hilal After Shortest Loan Spell

Saudi club Al-Hilal have reportedly reached an agreement to end Moroccan striker Abderrazak Hamdallah's loan deal just days after announcing his signing. According to Saudi outlet Arriyadiyah, the club and Hamdallah mutually agreed to part ways less than a week into the six-month deal. The striker had joined from Al-Shabab ahead of Al-Hilal's Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Brazil's Fluminense. Hamdallah, 34, came on as a substitute in that match and played only 25 minutes, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for Al-Hilal. The short-term contract included a clause allowing either party to end the agreement at any time. Reports suggest he will now join Al Shabab's pre-season training camp ahead of the new Saudi Pro League season. Al Hilal are said to have appreciated Hamdallah's willingness to join at short notice and are keen to end the contract amicably to avoid any financial disputes. Manager Simone Inzaghi reportedly did not see the Moroccan forward as part of his long-term plans and opted to exclude him from preparations for the Saudi Super Cup in August. Global Campaign Supports Hakimi's Ballon d'Or Bid

Rabat – Calls for Achraf Hakimi to clinch the Ballon d'Or are gaining momentum internationally, with growing support from not only Moroccans but international public figures, fans across social media, and more. Guillaume Huin, who is known in the social media space and presents himself as McDonald's senior marketing director, joined the chorus of supporters, emphasizing that Hakimi deserves to win this year's Ballon d'Or. 'I love Dembele. I adore Yamal. But when it comes to performance, consistency, leadership and ability to be a game changer in the team. No one sits at the table with Hakimi from PSG,' Huin wrote on X. The commenter applauded Hakimi's performance during the PSG-Bayern clash played yesterday, especially the Atlas Lion's impressive assists. 'He scores, he assists, he defends, he runs endlessly, and he commends his team with immense charisma,' he added. 'I do not know who will get the Ballon d'Or, so many deserve it this year, ut if Hakimi does not make it to the top 3, this will be one of the biggest anomalies in the history of sport,' he concluded. Media and fans, as well as public figures alike, agree that Hakimi is not far from clinching the award. Earlier this week, AFP released a report saying that Hakimi has strengthened his bid with standout performances throughout the season, including in the FIFA Club World Cup. Former French international and radio analyst Jean-Michel Larque echoed the same remarks, saying PSG boasts the best full-backs in the world, including Hakimi. 'It would be great for football to recognize defensive players in the Ballon d'Or's top 10,' he said. Former Moroccan goalkeeper Badou Zaki defended Hakimi and emphasized that there is no exaggeration in calling for Hakimi's inclusion among the Ballon d'Or bidders. 'The Ballon d'Or must go to the player who outshines the rest,' Zaki said. 'We talk about team trophies, personal contributions, and the values a player brings to the game. Hakimi belongs in that conversation.' Tags: Achraf HakimiBallon D'or

FIFA hails Yassine Bounou as one of the greatest modern goalkeepers

After making waves against Real Madrid and Manchester City at the 2025 Club World Cup, Yassine Bounou has further cemented his status as «one of the greatest goalkeepers of the modern era», the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) proudly declared. In an article dedicated to the Moroccan international, FIFA highlighted that the Al Hilal shot-stopper has «proven himself time and again». Bounou has «left his mark on unforgettable matches», delivering heroic performances in FIFA competitions and once again rising to the occasion on the global stage. Nicknamed «the Spider», he led his Saudi club to the quarter-finals with a dramatic 4–3 victory over Manchester City, an achievement FIFA notes in its reflection that «a good goalkeeper is often half the team». «With his exploits in decisive matches, Bounou has transcended the traditional role of a goalkeeper to become the architect of historic moments etched in football history», the article continues, referencing Morocco's historic win over Spain in the 2022 World Cup (0–0, 3–0 on penalties). In that match, Bounou saved penalties from Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets and made two crucial saves in regular and extra time, helping Morocco reach the quarter-finals for the first time ever. In the quarter-final against Portugal, which Morocco won 1–0, Bounou delivered another stellar performance, denying three dangerous shots, including a powerful strike from João Félix, to keep a clean sheet for the second consecutive game. The victory made Morocco the first Arab and African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final. At the 2025 Club World Cup, Bounou again made headlines, saving a late penalty against Real Madrid to help Al Hilal earn a crucial point. He registered five saves in that match, four from inside the box, against top talents like Vinícius Jr. and Gonzalo García. Just days later, Bounou donned his «superhero cape» once again, making 11 saves, eight of them from inside the box, against Manchester City in a stunning 4–3 extra-time win that propelled Al Hilal into the next round. FIFA also recalled his heroics in the 2023 UEFA Europa League final with Sevilla FC against AS Roma. With the match tied 1–1 after extra time, Bounou emerged as the hero in the penalty shootout, saving attempts from Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibañez with unshakable composure. His performance not only secured Sevilla's seventh Europa League title but also earned him the Man of the Match award.
