Eastleigh: Five taken to hospital as bus crashes into river in Hampshire
Five people have been taken to hospital after a double-decker bus carrying sixth-form students crashed into a river in Hampshire. The emergency services were called to Bishopstoke Road in Eastleigh at 10.07am after the bus carrying students from Barton Peveril Sixth Form College left the road and entered the River Itchen. Two of the patients taken to hospital have 'serious but not life-threatening injuries', the police said. Others with less serious injuries were treated at the scene. Nineteen passengers were on board, as well as a driver, who was among the injured. Inspector Andy Tester of Hampshire Constabulary said: 'There were a large number of specialist resources helping to get people out of the bus. Some people had got themselves out of the bus, and it was obviously important to us to triage the injured people, to assess the people who were still stuck in the bus, and to make sure we had accounted for everyone. 'It must have been terrifying and my thoughts are very much with what the children and the driver on the bus, who must have had a terrifying experience.' The school said: 'College staff are working closely with the police to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students.' It urged parents to refrain from attending the scene and instead to visit the incident centre at The Hub, a sports facility on Bishopstoke Road playing fields, where a police officer and school staff will be available. Images from the scene show the blue bus upright, parallel to the road, and in a ditch. Road barriers and a traffic light appear to have been broken and an electricity pole knocked down. UKNIP The bus was less than two miles away from the school when it crashed. Bluestar operates a dedicated bus service for the school. The 607 runs from the Knowle Village roundabout to the school. The road is expected to be closed for up to 12 hours while the police investigation continues and the bus is recovered. Police added: 'Everyone on the bus has been accounted for and all injured persons are being treated by the ambulance service. Parents will be contacted by the college.' The father of one of the boys on board said his 17-year-old son did not know what happened. Scott Agass told the Hampshire Chronicle: 'He said he was sitting there with a blanket and a monitor on his finger. He doesn't really know what happened or what caused it. I suppose it just happened so quick. All he saw was that it crashed and gone in the river.' Another parent, Annabel, told the BBC that her daughter called her crying to say the bus had crashed into a river. She has not seen her daughter yet but the child is 'banged up, shocked and has some cuts and bruises'. The driver is said to have told a woman who rushed to help after the crash that the 'brakes were not working' and 'the accelerator jammed'. Kelly West told the BBC she was working from home when she heard screeching and saw the bus 'careening into the river'. She claims the driver told her he was 'doing the best he could to avoid cars as he was coming down the road'. Keith Trenchard, another witness, said: 'We arrived 20 minutes after and it was all closed off. They had the divers here as well from the police and the fire brigade.' Richard Tyldsley, general manager for Bluestar, confirmed that one of its buses was 'involved in an incident' on Thursday morning and that 'reports suggest the bus left the highway and came to rest in a shallow river'. 'Our driver and at least two of the passengers have confirmed injuries, and we are awaiting further updates on the status of others on board,' he said. 'Our thoughts are with everybody involved, and we wish those who were injured a full and speedy recovery. At this time, we do not know the circumstances behind this incident and are carrying out an immediate investigation. We are also assisting the police as they carry out their own inquiries.' A spokesman for the ambulance service said: 'We have sent multiple units to the incident including five ambulances, two helicopters, and specialist response units. We're continuing to support and assess patients on scene. All patients have been removed from the bus. Three high-priority patients are being taken to hospital. Around 14 with less serious injuries are being treated on scene.' Barton Peveril has more than 4,900 students and offers A-levels and vocational courses. It was rated Outstanding by Ofsted in 2023. Among the school's alumni are the actor Colin Firth and the author David Nicholls.

There is 'quite a serious issue related to mental health' in the case of a Somalian national accused of the murder of his former partner Mary Ward in Belfast last year, the Central Criminal Court has heard. At the Central Criminal Court on Thursday, counsel for the defence, Oisin Clarke BL said that there were a number of issues with the case, with the accused's mental fitness to plead to be determined by the court. Mr Justice McDermott said that the court had received a report on the accused, which indicated that there was 'quite a serious issue related to mental health' in this case.
