You won't see the court drama, but a deal over your phone just let AT&T and T-Mobile off the hook for a massive payout

Big companies' lawyers are always busy, but mobile carrier lawyers might have it even worse. Now, luckily for AT&T and T-Mobile, they've got one less headache to worry about.
Both carriers have settled patent infringement lawsuits (subscription required) with Headwater Research, avoiding trials that were set to kick off this week. The lawsuits claimed AT&T and T-Mobile were infringing on wireless communication patents – specifically technologies meant to reduce data usage and ease network congestion. Headwater says these innovations came out of a 2009 meeting between its founder, Gregory Raleigh, and AT&T employees.
These settlements probably weren't a total surprise. Just recently, Verizon got hit with a $175 million jury verdict in a very similar case. That kind of blow likely nudged AT&T and T-Mobile to cut a deal before risking multi-million-dollar damages themselves. The terms of the settlements haven't been revealed, and both companies asked the court to put proceedings on hold. Headwater Research has been on a legal tear, targeting big wireless carriers over alleged patent infringements. Earlier this year, the company also scored a $279 million jury verdict against Samsung, related to two patents covering mobile phones, tablets, and TVs.

For context, Headwater sued T-Mobile back in August 2023 and followed up with AT&T about a week later, claiming each carrier infringed on two separate patents. All the patents revolved around wireless communication tech. T-Mobile 's trial was set for this Friday, and AT&T 's was supposed to start Thursday. So, by settling, both carriers sidestepped the chance of another Verizon -style multi-million-dollar verdict.
So, what exactly does Headwater do? The company is a tech incubator focused on mobile operating systems and cloud infrastructure for modern smartphone apps and services. According to court filings, it developed tech that reduces data usage, eases network congestion, extends battery life by lowering power consumption, and improves device connectivity – basically, stuff we all want.
While the available sources right now about the lawsuits against AT&T and T-Mobile didn't specify the exact patents, the Verizon case gives a hint. Headwater claimed it shared its tech under a non-disclosure agreement with Verizon between 2009 and 2011, only for Verizon to allegedly use those innovations in phones, tablets, and networks without a license. The settlements suggest AT&T and T-Mobile may have done something similar. Even without all the specifics, the core issue revolves around wireless communication improvements meant to make networks faster, devices smarter, and users happier.

Google Messages is slowly taking over Samsung and Pixel users' screens

A new Google Messages bug has popped up, and while it's mostly harmless, it's kind of bug has replicated the Google Messages icon, so there are now two app icons in the app launcher's suggestions and app drawer. The two icons are located next to each other, and either one of them can be used to launch the application. Interestingly, the app icon doesn't appear twice on the home screens and in search problem affects the Google Messages beta version 20250811_03_RC00 and has shown up on Pixel and Samsung devices. The code sleuths over at Android Authority dug deep into the problem and found out what was happening. Apparently, this is a result of duplicate declarations by Google, tricking the system into thinking that there are two apps to display, even though both icons open Google Messages. The Google Messages icon was duplicated after the latest beta update. | Image Credit - Android Authority A couple of users who uninstalled and reinstalled the app are now stuck with three icons. One user exited the beta and uninstalled updates, and the extra icon disappeared. —ImrozChauhan, Reddit user, August 2025 This looks like a harmless bug and doesn't appear to impact the app's functionality in any way. Google will likely eradicate the bug with the next update, but for those who don't like a cluttered interface and are very particular about how their app drawers look, it's surely a the downside of enrolling in beta programs, though, and usually, people who sign up for them are used to problems like you can't stand it, you may want to revert to the stable version of the Google Messages app. Google regularly ships new features to its messaging app, and the updates sometimes introduce bugs. For instance, earlier this month, the beta version was plagued with a bug that caused it to crash. Like we said, this is a part of the beta experience, and if you want more stability, the beta program might not be for you.

Best Buy is selling the glorious Google Pixel 9 Pro at an unbelievable $400 discount

As if Google's mission to build buzz around next week's Pixel 10 series launch event was not made difficult enough by the repetitive designs and specs of the "new" phones and the rumored delay of the family's most exciting member, Amazon and Best Buy are for some reason making it rain this week with killer Pixel 9 series deals. Mere hours after spotting the Pixel 9 Pro Fold at an unprecedented $600 discount, I'm here to recommend you consider the Pixel 9 Pro at 400 bucks under its list price as well. Obviously, this is a totally different device aimed at a different audience, with just one screen in tow that's incredibly the same size as the 9 Pro Fold's secondary display. 5G, Unlocked, 128GB Storage, 16GB RAM, Android 14, Google Tensor G4 Processor, 6.3-Inch LTPO OLED Display with 2856 x 1280 Pixel Resolution and 120Hz Refresh Rate Technology, 50 + 48 +48MP Triple Rear-Facing Camera System, 42MP Front-Facing Camera, Gemini Integration, 4,700mAh Battery, Obsidian Color Buy at BestBuy Of course, the resolution and peak brightness are both higher on the non-Fold Pixel 9 Pro , which only costs $599 after that aforementioned $400 markdown, making the Pixel 9 Pro Fold feel overpriced once again. In case you're wondering, this handset has never been this affordable before, and yes, that includes Amazon's member-exclusive Prime Day sales event last month. And no, you don't have to meet any special conditions whatsoever right now to maximize your savings. What you may need to do is hurry, as you're obviously looking at a single 128GB storage variant sold for a whopping $400 less than usual, and perhaps even more notably, a single Obsidian colorway as well. That almost certainly means that Best Buy will run out of inventory pretty quickly for a very simple reason. The Pixel 9 Pro is relatively small, but also extremely powerful, sharp, and stylish. | Image Credit -- PhoneArena This is an absolutely unbeatable value proposition at the time of this writing, and the thing that will probably drive that point home in the best way is our comprehensive Pixel 9 Pro review from last year calling the 6.3-inch Tensor G4 powerhouse the "dream compact phone." I just can't think of a compact device capable of matching this bad boy's raw speed, camera performance, screen quality, battery life, long-term software support, and affordability, and while the Pixel 10 Pro is virtually guaranteed to bring some upgrades to the table next week, those are unlikely to be very impressive... and the price point is likely to be quite hard to stomach at launch.
