Disburse salary dues to aided-college teachers, says MUTA
Members of Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa, Alagappa, Tamil Nadu Teachers' Education and Anna university Teachers Association (MUTA) staged a protest outside the Collector office here on Wednesday demanding the pending payments for government-aided college teachers.
A.T. Senthamarai Kannan, general secretary, said that while university and government college lecturers were being paid regularly, teachers of aided college have not been paid for several months now. While the colleges in regions like Coimbatore and Thanjavur were paid, teachers at colleges in Chennai, Madurai and Tirunelveli region were not paid, he added.
As the Higher Education Department was not facing any fund crunch and no Government Orders were issued regarding the pendency of funds for teachers, why only the aided-college teachers were kept on hold for several months, he questioned.
'As demand for grants for Higher Education is to be discussed in the State Assembly session, the matter of pending salary for aided-college teachers should be discussed,' he added.

Qureshi, Singh, 'Nari Shakti': The face of India's response to terrorists
At 10.30am at the conference room of Delhi's National Media Centre on Wednesday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stepped up to the lectern to brief the gathered media corps about India's 'Operation Sindoor'. The symbolism was not lost either on those present in the hall or the millions watching on television and internet when he introduced Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, who he said will share operational details of India's pre-dawn missile and drone strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan. Government sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who closely followed India's fighter jets unleashing missiles on terror camps for 25-minutes from 1.05am, had picked the codename 'Operation Sindoor' as an expression of solidarity with women whose husbands were killed by terrorists in Pahalgam on April 22. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta posted 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' on her X handle, and said, 'Operation Sindoor has provided justice to the women who lost their spouses'. Captain (retired) Manjula Katoch was one of several retired defence services personnel who lauded the symbolism of the press briefing. She said that fielding Qureshi and Singh to brief the media was to underscore people of all religious persuasion were together in protecting the nation's unity, and to not fall in the trap of Pakistan's attempt at dividing Hindus and Muslims. At the briefing, Foreign Secretary Misri said that the Pahalgam terror attack was driven by the objective of undermining the normalcy returning to Jammu & Kashmir and hit tourism, but was also an attempt at sowing communal discord in the country. 'The manner of the attack was also driven by an objective of provoking communal discord, both in Jammu & Kashmir and the rest of the nation. It is to the credit of the government and the people of India that these designs were foiled,' Misri said. At a panel discussion hosted in 2017, Qureshi had shared details of her journey into the armed forces. 'Being a 'fauji' kid, I was exposed to the army environment. My mother wanted either of us two sisters to join the Army. I applied for it and got it. My grandfather was also in the Army,' she had recalled. Qureshi said the Kargil War was on when she joined the academy. Born in Gujarat's Vadodara in 1974, Qureshi graduated with a Master's in biochemistry from Manonmaniam Sundaranar (MS) University in 1997. An officer in the critical Corps of Signals, in the past, she had been picked for the role of a military observer in Democratic Republic of Congo in 2006, and been part of flood relief operations in the Northeast region. In 2016, she became the first woman officer to lead its contingent at a multi-national field training exercise, Force 18, hosted by India for interoperability in sustaining peace among ASEAN nations. As for Wing Commander Singh, she shared her story of how she became a pilot during a panel discussion hosted by a private channel in 2023. 'I was in Class 6 when the Eureka moment happened. I realised that I wanted to be a pilot and own the sky. We were having a discussion in class on the meaning of names. Somebody shouted, 'You are Vyomika, which means you own the sky'. Since that day, I have wanted to be a pilot. This was in the early 1990s,' Singh had recalled. She has logged over 2,500 flying hours, and has operated several helicopters across some of the country's most challenging terrains. In 2020, she led a rescue operation in Arunachal Pradesh, flying in extreme conditions to evacuate civilians.

SIT report of liquor scam against YSRCP is fabricated
Vijayawada: Former Minister Merugu Nagarjuna has strongly criticised TDP-led coalition government for orchestrating a politically motivated liquor scam against YSRCP leaders. He described the alleged scam as a scripted political drama crafted by CM N Chandrababu Naidu to divert public attention from TDP's past liquor scandals and the coalition's ongoing irregularities. In a statement on Saturday, Nagarjuna alleged that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report is fabricated and lacks credible evidence. He clarified the so-called liquor scam during YSRCP's tenure (2019–24) is entirely fictitious, relying solely on coerced statements obtained through harassment. He highlighted that former Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation Limited (APSBCL) officials, such as Vasudeva Reddy, and lower-level employees, including Satya Prasad and Anusha, were threatened into providing false testimonies. 'Despite seeking anticipatory bail from High Court three times, Vasudeva Reddy was coerced into submitting a false statement under CrPC Section 164. After complying, he was promptly relieved from his deputation, exposing the SIT's manipulative tactics.' Nagarjuna also noted that distillery directors faced physical assaults to extract statements. The former Minister underscored that Excise department data confirms YSRCP's reforms led to a significant decline in liquor sales, reducing distillery profits. Logically, distilleries would not pay bribes to a government that curtailed their earnings, debunking the SIT's claims of kickbacks. Initially, the SIT alleged the scam caused losses to the exchequer, but upon finding no evidence, it shifted to accusing YSRCP leaders of receiving kickbacks, Nagarjuna pointed out. Shifting focus to TDP's own liquor scam during its 2014–19 tenure, Nagarjuna stated that TDP leaders looted State through systemic corruption. He noted that 53.21% of liquor purchases were made from just four favoured distilleries. Chandrababu Naidu signed two secret Government Orders (G.O. 218 and G.O. 468), which eliminated mandatory fees for liquor shops and bars, causing an annual revenue loss of Rs 1,300 crore, totalling over Rs 5,000 crore over five years. Additionally, liquor was sold at 20% above the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), resulting in a Rs 20,000 crore scam. Nagarjuna reminded that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) raised objections to these irregularities, and a Crime Investigation Department (CID) case was registered against Chandrababu Naidu and other TDP leaders under serious criminal and anti-corruption laws. He described revival of fake liquor scam narrative as a deliberate attempt by the coalition to cover up its ongoing irregularities. The government is using SITs, media propaganda, and lawless tactics to mask its failures. Nagarjuna also noted that the CID case against Chandrababu Naidu's liquor scam was quietly shelved after TDP returned to power. Demanding accountability, Nagarjuna called for the reopening of the CID case against Chandrababu Naidu and suggested it be handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a fair and independent probe. He stressed that the people of Andhra Pradesh deserve to know the truth about the real liquor scam that took place during TDP's rule.
