MUTA opposes TANSCHE's draft policy on code for teachers
Madurai: Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa, and Alagappa University Teachers' Association (MUTA) has opposed the draft model policy on the code of conduct for teachers, released by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE). In a statement, A T Senthamarai Kannan, general secretary of MUTA, said the draft was released without consulting key stakeholders and curtails the fundamental right to free expression. Teachers in higher education institutions are governed by The Tamil Nadu Private Colleges (Regulation) Act. He said TANSCHE unilaterally released a draft code of conduct for teachers and solicited feedback. The document lacks any mention of scientific temperament and restricts teachers' freedom of expression. It added that this draft is being framed without citing any violations by institutions, which raises legal concerns. Using the term "Institutional Policy" without any such context is a dangerous precedent in higher education, he said. MUTA notes that Tamil Nadu ranks first nationally in the higher education sector, with lakhs of students receiving education from dedicated teachers. In such a scenario, introducing new conduct rules without any proper consultations or approvals from stakeholders contradicts the existing legal and regulatory frameworks, he added. So, MUTA urged TANSCHE to consult all stakeholders before finalising it.

Aided college teachers protest delay in CAS salary benefits
1 2 Madurai: Around 300 faculty members, including 100 women professors from govt-aided colleges, staged a day-long sit-in protest on Monday at the Joint Director of Collegiate Education Office in Madurai. The demonstration was led by the Association of University Teachers (AUT) and the Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa, and Alagappa University Teachers' Association (MUTA), representing aided college staff across Tamil Nadu. The protest was part of a coordinated statewide agitation across eight zones — Chennai, Trichy, Vellore, Dharmapuri, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Thanjavur — demanding immediate implementation of long-pending Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) salary benefits and arrears, delayed by over four years. While the higher education department had issued Government Order No. 5 sanctioning CAS promotions and pay hikes, aided college teachers alleged they have yet to receive any benefits, unlike their counterparts in government colleges who were paid their dues. "Out of the eight zones, CAS benefits have been implemented only in Coimbatore and Thanjavur," said Dr A T Senthamarai Kannan, general secretary of MUTA. "We've raised this issue more than 30 times, but there's been no resolution." He pointed out that despite a directive from the chief minister for immediate implementation of government orders, aided college faculty remain excluded. He also noted that incentive increments for MPhil and PhD holders have not been disbursed. The unions said the higher education department had assured them in June that CAS benefits would be included in the July 2025 salary, but the promise was not kept. MUTA to conduct NET, SET coaching classes from June 2 to 14
Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa and Alagappa University Teachers association (MUTA) will be conducting free coaching classes for National Eligibility Test Paper-I (Teaching and Research Aptitude) and Tamil Nadu-State Eligibility Test for interested candidates. The classes will be held at MUTA office at Kakathoppu from 5.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. from June 2 to June 14, except Sunday. Those interested could apply through google form The candidates should submit relevant details such as name, subject, institution, contact number and WhatsApp number by May 16. The candidates, however, have to pay ₹600 for study materials.

Disburse salary dues to aided-college teachers, says MUTA
Members of Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa, Alagappa, Tamil Nadu Teachers' Education and Anna university Teachers Association (MUTA) staged a protest outside the Collector office here on Wednesday demanding the pending payments for government-aided college teachers. A.T. Senthamarai Kannan, general secretary, said that while university and government college lecturers were being paid regularly, teachers of aided college have not been paid for several months now. While the colleges in regions like Coimbatore and Thanjavur were paid, teachers at colleges in Chennai, Madurai and Tirunelveli region were not paid, he added. As the Higher Education Department was not facing any fund crunch and no Government Orders were issued regarding the pendency of funds for teachers, why only the aided-college teachers were kept on hold for several months, he questioned. 'As demand for grants for Higher Education is to be discussed in the State Assembly session, the matter of pending salary for aided-college teachers should be discussed,' he added.
