Over 65 canceled flights; nearly 250 delayed after electrical issue causes ground stop at Philly International

Passengers were left scrambling at Philadelphia International Airport after an electrical issue caused a ground stop at the busy airport.
Flights were struggling to return to normal operating status as lingering issues from severe weather Friday also contributed to additional flight delays.
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - In a chaotic 24 hours, many passengers traveling in and out of Philadelphia International Airport have seen their flights delayed for hours or outright canceled, as airlines try to catch up.
What we know
A ground stop was reported at Philadelphia International Airport, affecting American Airlines, late Saturday morning. The airline said three flights were canceled due to the electrical issue and by 2 p.m. Saturday, the ground stop had been lifted.
In a statement, American Airlines said:
"Systems have returned after a brief electrical issue at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). Our teams worked quickly with the airport's electricians to resolve the issue, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience."
They encouraged travelers to check their flights through the airline website or through the airline app.

According to the flight tracking website FlightAware, 69 flights had been canceled at Philly International, the majority of those being American or its partner airlines.
Additionally, over 200 American Airlines, or its subsidiaries, experienced delays.
Severe weather from Friday was also thought to be a contributing factor to some delays as airlines work to get back to their normal schedules.
FlightAware lists a total of 249 delays and 69 cancellations by late afternoon Saturday.

This Is the No. 1 City in the U.S. for BBQ, According to Yelp
It's a statistical fact that warm weather makes people want to buy barbecue foods. With the (hot) dog days of summer just around the corner, that means any second now you're going to start craving something grilled, charred, and smothered in sauce. And Yelp knows exactly where you should go to get it. Yelp compiled a list of the top cities in the U.S. for "smoked meats and mouth-watering barbecue sauces." It explained in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure that it created the list by ranking each location using a "blended metric including consumer interest in BBQ, total business count, and average business rating." It noted that it limited this year's list to two cities per state to "ensure geographic diversity." After looking at all the data, unsurprisingly, Austin won. "Austin reigns supreme as the No. 1 region for barbecue," Yelp shared. "Whether you like slow-smoked beef brisket, pork ribs, or house-made sausages, Austin has earned its reputation as a top barbecue destination." It noted that Austin has earned this reputation thanks to beloved spots like Terry Black's Barbecue and food trucks like Micklethwait Craft Meat in East Austin, which both earn high praise from Yelp users. "Yelp users praise Austin's barbecue for its simple seasonings, which let the quality of the meat shine. Trays of tender brisket, flavorful ribs, and pulled pork sandwiches are among the most photographed dishes," it added. "Many users also highlight the perfectly tender texture of the meats at spots like Interstellar BBQ and Salt Lick BBQ." Also at the top of the list is San Antonio, which came in at No. 2. "The area's diverse barbecue scene includes food trucks like Brisket Boys and Cake-N-Que, which showcase a variety of smoked meat styles," Yelp shared. It's followed by Kansas City, Missouri, which earned high praise thanks to its "signature sauce and legendary burnt ends" at restaurants like Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que, which "boasts more than 3,500 5-star reviews. Then there's Memphis, Tennessee, which Yelp noted is "well-known for its dry-rub ribs and pulled pork, offered at beloved restaurants like Cozy Corner and Elwood's Shack." And rounding out the top five is Charleston, South Carolina, which ranked highly thanks to its traditional Lowcountry styles. Even the official San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau website sets the chill tone: 'You won't find rental cars or public transportation, stoplights, mopeds, a movie theater or a shopping mall.' It goes on to sing the praises of the opportunities to explore and experience natural beauty on beaches and rocky trails. For the last four years, my husband and I have been volunteering as camp hosts at Spencer Spit State Park, a sweet gig that allows us to park our 23-foot motorhome in the campground for a month while doing some low-lift chores. In the very beginning, when we couldn't believe our good fortune at landing in such a gorgeous spot, we wrote that we'd found our version of paradise. Fill out the picnic fixings or cookout list at Village Market, a welcoming retailer that doubles as a community hub. Yes, those banners hanging in the produce department feature portraits of the class of 2025. And, you bet, you can buy a set of sheets there if an extra guest shows up on the porch of your vacation digs. The fragrant smoke from the various meats cooking low-and-slow is a signal that David's BBQ is legit. Try the brisket with the tomato-based sauce that's got a touch of sweet and heat. Fine Mess Bakery offers an assortment of beautiful pastries and, on weekends, excellent bread, while Isabel's Espresso has coffee lovers covered. Lopez Island Creamery is only open weekends, but the cute scoop shop is well worth a visit. There's also a taproom, a juice bar and apothecary. My favorite spot, hands down, is the Setsunai Noodle Bar, where chef Josh Ratza has earned a well-deserved reputation for his house-made ramen and spectacular soba. This week, Ratza announced on Instagram that he's relocating to a larger place, saying so long to the tiny space he and his crew have made work the last eight years. Soon, Setsunai Noodle Bar at The Galley will launch across from scenic Fisherman's Bay. Hooray! The new spot is just down the road from The Islander Resort and Marina, home of the bar and grill with one of the prettiest views on Lopez from its bayside deck. Chef Josh Ratza at Setsunai on Lopez Island has built a loyal fan base with his rich, complex ramen ... More and house-made noodles. The Noodle Bar is moving mid-June 2025 to a larger space. Some make Lopez a day trip destination, as the handful of accommodations tend to get booked out during the busy summer season. If you're looking to camp, in addition to Spencer Spit, there's Odlin county park, which also has a boat launch and fantastic sunsets. Reservations on the Washington state ferries is essential for the trip out to the San Juan Islands, but on the way back to the mainland, it's a first-come, first-served lineup kind of situation. Your best bet is to download the department of transportation app, which offers real-time tracking options.

(Photo by Kayla Bartkowski) President Trump's executive order banning travel from 12 countries includes an exception for 'any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, persons performing a necessary support role, and immediate relatives, traveling for the World Cup, Olympics, or other major sporting event as determined by the Secretary of State.' Sports tourism accounts for 10% of global tourism spending, according to UN Tourism, with a projected growth rate of 17.5% between 2023-2030. In 2024, sports tourism generated $114.4 billion in the United States and supported nearly 665,000 jobs, according to a study from Sports ETA—but upcoming major soccer tournaments are expected to boost those numbers for 2025 and 2026. International sports events further on the U.S. horizon include the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, men's and women's Rugby World Cups in 2031 and 2033, and the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Beyond the World Cup and the Olympics, it's unclear which sports events will get a carve out from Trump's travel ban. For example, it is assumed but not specified that the 'World Cup' mentioned in the executive order applies to both the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, in which the world's top professional club teams are slated to play in U.S. venues this year, and the FIFA World Cup 2026, in which national teams compete next year. Dozens of Major League Baseball players hail from Cuba and Venezuela—two countries on the banned list. The State Department did not respond to Forbes' request for a full list of sports events that qualify for the exception. This year's FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and next year's FIFA World Cup 2026 are projected to drive a combined $71.8 billion in economic output across both years in the U.S., according to analyses from FIFA and OpenEconomics (OE). But those forecasts assume several million international tourists will come to the U.S. to watch the events in person both years. In March, when Trump created a White House task force for the World Cup, the U.S. Travel Association (USTA) projected the events could potentially draw 8 million visitors 'if we build the right processes for both the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and the FIFA World Cup 26.' But tourism experts say the Trump administration has hamstrung the U.S. with unwelcoming messaging and policies. President Trump's tariffs, imperialistic rhetoric and viral headlines of foreigners with legal tourist visas and green cards being detained by U.S. immigration officials are 'stacking up as significant hurdles for the U.S. travel industry' and 'setting international travel back several years,' Adam Sacks, president of Tourism Economics, a nonpartisan Oxford Economics company tracking tourism statistics, told Forbes in March. Since Trump took office, the U.S. has experienced a dramatic downturn in inbound international tourism, with a projected 8.7% drop in U.S. international arrivals for 2025, according to the latest forecast from Tourism Economics. Visits from Canada (-20.2%) and Western Europe (-5.8%) show the sharpest declines. Airline bookings for international travel to the U.S.—a key forward-looking indicator—through July were down 10.8% as of April. Many experts see these as unforced errors that are harmful to the economy. The travel ban will not change the narrative, regardless of carve outs for athletes. 'I think increasingly, whether there's validity to it or not, we have to acknowledge these headlines around the world of people being detained, of their devices being searched, stories of deportation—it's causing a degree of fear,' Geoff Freeman, CEO of the USTA, told Forbes in April. 'And in the absence of effective communication to explain what CBP is doing, what US policy is the fact that we want you to come we've allowed this negative publicity to run rampant.' FIFA president Gianni Infantino was a guest at Trump's inauguration in January, has attended White House meetings and has been a vocal supporter of the president. Infantino's coziness with Trump has drawn criticism from international soccer organizations. Earlier this month, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) excoriated Infantino for arriving late to the FIFA Congress in order to meet with Trump during his tour of the Middle East, accusing the FIFA chief of putting 'private political interests' ahead of his commitment to soccer.
