"Services Down The Drain": M Kharge On When He Missed Out Being Chief Minister
Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress chief and Gandhi family loyalist, voiced regrets on how he missed being the Chief Minister of Karnataka despite winning an election for the Congress.
Speaking at a programme in Vijayapura, Mr Kharge started reminiscing about his time in the state in the late 1990s, when he was upstaged by a new-comer.
"As a Legislative Party leader I did everything I could to bring us to power. The government was finally formed. As soon as we came to power, SM Krishna, who joined just four months ago, became Chief Minister" Mr Kharge said.
"All my service was washed down the drain. I felt that I worked tirelessly for five years. But the person who came just four months ago got the position of the Chief Minister," he added.
SM Krishna was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004. Mr Kharge served as a minister under him - and other Chief Ministers till he contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2009.
In 2022, Mr Kharge - widely seen as the candidate approved by the Gandhis -- became the chief of Congress, winning the organisational election in a contest against Shashi Tharoor.
It was widely believed that caste played a big role in picking SM Krishna for the top post at the cost of sidelining Mr Kharge's SC background despite his seniority and contributions. SM Krishna hailed from the Vokkaliga community -- a historically dominant caste in Karnataka.

'It's definitely a blow': Shashi Tharoor reacts to Trump's 50% tariff on India; asserts it's not a 'good news'
Donald Trump and Shashi Tharoor (R) NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday responded to the Trump administration's decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on India for importing crude oil from Russia. With this, the total tariff imposed by the US on Indian goods now stands at 50%. The new announcement comes just a week after Trump had already declared a 25% tariff on Indian exports. Tharoor said this development is not "good news" for India, warning that such high tariffs will make Indian products too expensive in the US market. He said, "That's going to make Indian goods unaffordable to a lot of people in America." He also compared India's situation with other countries and raised concerns about competitiveness. "I'm afraid that if you look at people like Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, even Bangladesh and Pakistan have lower tariffs than us, then ultimately people will not be buying goods from us in America if they can buy them cheaper elsewhere. So that's not very good for our exports to America," he said. Tharoor added that India now needs to focus on expanding trade elsewhere. "This means we need to very seriously diversify to other countries and other markets that may be interested in what we have to offer. We now have an FTA with the UK. We are talking to the EU. There are many countries in which hopefully we would be able to, but in the short term, it is definitely a blow" The ministry of external affairs also criticised the US decision in a strongly worded statement, calling it "unfortunate" and reaffirming India's intention to protect its national interests. "It is extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest," the statement said. President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday announcing the extra 25% tariff, which will apply over and above the existing 25%. While the first tariff comes into effect on August 7, 2025, the second one will be enforced 21 days from now.

Congress councillor named in ‘love jihad' finance case should surrender: Party colleague
The Leader of Opposition, who is a Congress politician, came out in support of Qadri and alleged the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has implicated him in the 'love jihad' case to divert people's attention from basic issues. A reward of Rs 20,000 has been announced by police for providing information leading to the arrest of the councillor, who is absconding for nearly two months. Indore, Aug 6 (PTI) Absconding city Congress councillor Anwar Qadri, accused of funding 'love jihad', should surrender before police, his party colleague and Leader of Opposition in the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) Chintu Choukse said on Wednesday. Talking to reporters, he said, 'The BJP government is presenting Qadri as the biggest criminal of the state, but in municipal corporation conferences, he always spoke in support of cows and temples.' Chouksey claimed Qadri was implicated in the alleged 'love jihad' funding case at the BJP's behest in the same manner as false charges were being framed against opposition politicians across the country by misusing law enforcement agencies to divert people's attention from key issues. Asked why Qadri has been running away from the law, the Leader of Opposition replied, 'Of course this is a mistake. He should surrender.' Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said on Tuesday a proposal will be presented in the upcoming meeting of the civic body to cancel Qadri's membership because his continuation as a councillor is not in the interest of the city given the serious allegations against him, including the 'love jihad' case. The term 'love jihad' is used by right-wing organisations to claim that Muslim men lure women of other religions into love traps to convert them to Islam. A police official said two young men from the city — Sahil Sheikh and Altaf Shah — had allegedly admitted during interrogation in June that Qadri had given them Rs 3 lakh to convert girls. The duo was arrested in separate cases on charges of raping two women and other offences. On the basis of statements given by the two men, a case was registered against Qadri for being involved in a conspiracy to convert girls/women through financial allurement. Since then, the Congress councillor is absconding. The official said after Qadri absconded, the district administration issued an order to arrest him under the National Security Act (NSA). He said 18 criminal cases have been registered against the Congress councillor in different police stations in the city. PTI HWP MAS RSY This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
