Owen Farrell made his tour debut from the bench and Duhan van der Merwe bagged a hat-trick of tries as a polished British and Irish Lions crushed a combined Australia-New Zealand side 48-0 on Saturday.
The thumping eight-try romp at Adelaide Oval was their fifth consecutive win to ensure an unblemished record heading into the first Test against the Wallabies next weekend in Brisbane.
Up 17-0 at half-time, the Lions controlled the contest, swift at the breakdown and with plenty of attacking flair in their most cohesive and accurate performance of the tour so far.
The victory was soured by an injury to hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie, who was stretchered off after what appeared to be a nasty knee to the head, although he recovered enough to return to the bench later.
Farrell, a veteran of three previous Lions tours, came on 10 minutes into the second half to a mixed reaction after being controversially called up to replace Elliot Daly, who broke his arm against the Queensland Reds.
It was his first game in two months after a challenging season with French side Racing 92, but the former England captain quickly blew away any cobwebs playing at inside centre.
By the time he arrived the damage had been done, with tries from Van der Merwe, Ben White, and Sione Tuipulotu overwhelming the ragtag invitational team under the guidance of incoming Wallabies coach Les Kiss.
It was the first time rugby powerhouses Australia and New Zealand had joined forces since 1989, but they barely had a week's preparation.
Their weaknesses were exploited by a Lions side knowing it was their last chance to impress before coach Andy Farrell picks his matchday 23 for Brisbane.
Ireland's Hugo Keenan put up his hand to be Test full-back with an accomplished effort in place of main rival Blair Kinghorn who is nursing an injured knee.
Similarly, Jac Morgan excelled at openside flanker as did Henry Pollock at blindside as the fight for back-row spots heats up.
Scottish duo Tuipulotu and Huw Jones were slick again in their battle with Irish pair Bundee Aki and Garry Ringrose to be starting centres.
The Lions showed plenty of early intent and caught the hosts napping when Keenan cleverly took a quick lineout and Van der Merwe powered over in the corner.
A second try, this one converted, came minutes later when a gap was opened by the ruck and scrumhalf White hit the accelerator to dart through under the posts.
It was the type of start the Lions have been striving for all tour and they surged 17-0 clear after 20 minutes when Van der Merwe grabbed his second, finishing a flowing move that split the defence.
The home side needed to begin the second-half well, but were rocked by a Lions try in the opening minutes when Tuipulotu hit the line to perfection after a tap and go from White.
With a 24-0 lead, it was all over bar Farrell's cameo and there were further tries from lock Scott Cummings, Van der Merwe, hooker Ronan Kelleher and Pollock.

Ruan Nortjé embraces innovative tactics in Springboks' victory over Italy

Ruan Nortje (top) masters a lineout during the second Test against Italy on Saturday. The towering lock was at the centre of the manufactured rolling mauls in open play that brought two tries for the world champions. Image: Phill Magakoe / AFP Springbok lock Ruan Nortjé was effusive in his praise for the rolling mauls executed from open play, which played a pivotal role in the team's decisive victory over Italy this past weekend. The line-out specialist found himself at the centre of this manufactured strategy, lending his height and agility to what became a focal point of their attacking prowess during the Test match held in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. It is a move the world champions borrowed from the Under-14 B-team of Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, and Nortjé was thrilled that they could execute it almost flawlessly every time they used it. However, it remains to be seen whether the Boks will utilise it again this weekend when they face Georgia in Nelspruit in the final mid-year Test. 'It is always nice to do different things and bring in innovative stuff into the game, it opens up more opportunities,' Nortjé said on Monday. 'We want to develop our game and attack. It enables us to do different things with the ball in hand. It is very exciting, and I am always game for anything innovative and doing something different in a game.' Nortjé added that it's a privilege being back in the Bok mix, especially with most of the senior locks fit and firing. He played in his first Test of the season this past weekend against Italy, and alongside captain Salmaan Moerat, they formed a formidable second row, especially in the line-outs. The Bulls' captain is ready to grasp the opportunity again on Saturday, should he be selected on Tuesday by head coach Rassie Erasmus to face the Georgians. 'The Mbombela Stadium is one of my favourite places to play. Last year, I was fortunate to face Argentina here, and I won't forget the atmosphere and the support for the team. The people here really get behind the Boks, so I'll be very excited if I get an opportunity to play this weekend. 'It is a special environment to be part of, and every player is blessed to be here, so whenever you get the opportunity, you must grab it with both hands. "There are many capable guys who are not part of the group. So, it is always important to remember how privileged you are to be here. 'Personally, I try to learn as much as I can whenever I'm in the team. We have some of the best locks in the world here with Lood (de Jager), Eben (Etzebeth), Franco (Mostert) and RG (Snyman), and it is a real honour to learn from them and grow my game. I try to represent South Africa to the best of my abilities.'

Lions call up Ireland prop Clarkson and Scots trio as cover

BRISBANE - The British and Irish Lions added Ireland prop Tom Clarkson to their squad as cover for Saturday's first Test against Australia in Brisbane and called up a trio of Scotland players for a tour match next week. Ireland tighthead Clarkson will reinforce the front-row options for the first Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane along with Jamie George. England hooker George got the call on Saturday after Luke Cowan-Dickie suffered a suspected concussion in the 48-0 win against the AUNZ XV in Adelaide. The 25-year-old Clarkson is flying in from Lisbon, where he played in the Ireland team that beat Portugal 106-7 on Saturday. His call-up swells the Irish contingent in the Lions squad, under Ireland head coach Andy Farrell, to 18 players. Scotland trio Rory Sutherland, Ewan Ashman and Darcy Graham will provide cover for the tour match against the First Nations and Pasifika XV in Melbourne next Tuesday, July 22. All three started in Scotland's 29-14 defeat to Fiji in Suva at the weekend and are in New Zealand preparing for a match against Samoa in Auckland on Friday. Graham will miss the match against Samoa after being sent off for a second yellow card against Fiji and will join the Lions squad in Brisbane immediately. Sutherland and Ashman will fly to Melbourne on Sunday. Clarkson was given his Ireland debut by Farrell in November and has won eight caps. His Ireland teammate Jamie Osborne, who can play centre or full-back, is already with the Lions in Brisbane after being summoned from Portugal as cover for Blair Kinghorn, who injured his knee last week. Scotland's Kinghorn, widely regarded as first-choice Lions fullback, landed awkwardly in the 36-24 win against ACT Brumbies last Wednesday but scans on the knee showed no serious damage. "We're hopeful that he will take some part in training (this week)," said Lions defence coach Simon Easterby of Kinghorn. "Then it will be a little bit of a waiting game in terms of whether he's available for the first Test." The Lions, winners of all five warm-up matches in Australia leading into the first Test, have already lost Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams to a torn hamstring and English fullback Elliot Daly with a broken arm.
