Sonam offered Rs. 20L for murder, helped push body into gorge: Sources
Lucknow: A day after the murder of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi took a dramatic turn with the arrest of his wife Sonam Raghwanshi and the exposure of a murder-for-hire plot, it has come to the fore that Sonam offered Rs 4 lakh for her husband's murder and then raised the amount to Rs 20 lakh. According to reports, the hitmen hired by Sonam first met with the Raghuvanshi couple in Bengaluru, from where they took their connecting flight to the northeast.
Shillong police sources suggested that the plan of a one-way ticket to Meghalaya was Sonam's plan. Even though her boyfriend did not travel to Meghalaya, he did the planning behind the scenes and was in touch with Sonam, the reports added.
According to top police sources, Sonam had also helped the other accused in pushing Raghuvanshi's body into a gorge in Meghalaya.
Raja Raghuvanshi's body was found in a gorge near a waterfall in Sohra area (also known as Cherrapunji) of East Khasi Hills district on June 2, days after he reached Meghalaya with his wife Sonam for their honeymoon.
Sonam had allegedly hired killers to get rid of her husband as she reportedly wanted to be with her lover. As per sources, Sonam Raghuvanshi planned the murder with her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha just a few days after her May 11 wedding in Indore.
The accused first followed the newlyweds to Guwahati on May 21 where they stayed close to their hotel and then to Shillong on May 22. They killed Raja the next day, the sources said. On May 23, Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi went on a trek to a steep peak to see a waterfall, with the hitmen following their trail.
At one point, Sonam pretended to be tired and started walking much behind her husband and the killers, the sources said. When they reached a deserted place, Sonam allegedly asked the men to kill her husband.
The killers, however, refused to kill him, saying they were tired, as per the sources. Sonam Raghuvanshi then allegedly raised her offer to 20 lakh, they said.
According to sources, Sonam also helped the accused in throwing Raja's body into the ditch. As per the preliminary autopsy report, Raja Raghuvanshi was hit twice, once each on the back and front of his head. The Meghalaya Police knew on June 3, a day after they found the body of Raja Raghuvanshi in the gorge, that his wife was involved in the murder. The Meghalaya Police has claimed that all those involved in the conspiracy to kill the man from Indore - including Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan and Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi - have been arrested in the operation that they codenamed 'Operation Honeymoon'.

Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder: The Meghalaya Police, investigating the murder of Indore-native newlywed Raja Raghuvanshi—who was killed during his honeymoon in the state—have identified Raj Kushwaha as the mastermind behind the chilling murder case, with Raja's wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, actively involved in the plot. The police said that the killers had planned to murder any woman and burn her body to pass it as that of Sonam so that she would be able to be in hiding for a few more days till the truth is known. On the first day of interrogation of Sonam, Raj and three others, who were arrested in connection with the killing of Raja Raghuvanshi, also revealed that she fled from Meghalaya in a burqa and reached Indore using various modes of transport like taxi, bus and train. 'The conspiracy to eliminate Raja was hatched in Indore, shortly before his wedding with Sonam on May 11, and the mastermind is Raj while the woman had agreed to the plot," East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told news agency PTI. 'The three young people were friends, and one of them is a cousin of Raj. It was not a typical contract killing. Yes, the plan was to kill and they did it as a favour to their friend Raj," Syiem said. Raj had given them Rs 50,000 for the expenditures, he said. Syiem further revealed that the plot began in February, when the group was in Indore. The plan revolved around making Sonam disappear, but later turned into a murder conspiracy. 'One plan was to make people believe that she would wash away by a river. Another plan was to murder any woman, burn the body and claim that it was of Sonam. However, none of the plans fructify," the police officer said. After Raja and Sonam were married on May 11, they visited the Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam. A few days later, the accused also reached the area. According to police, the group initially planned to kill Raja in Guwahati, but later shifted the plan to Shillong. Syiem said they started together for Weisawdong Falls, and there all three hit Raja with a machete they bought in Assam and killed him in front of Sonam between 2 pm and 2.18 pm on May 23 before throwing the body in a gorge. Sonam gave Akash the raincoat she was wearing as his shirt had a blood spot. They left Weisawdong on scooters, and Akash threw the raincoat later as it too had blood stains. They also abandoned the two-wheeler hired by Sonam and Raja at a place, the SP said. The police recovered the raincoat and the two-wheeler when the search for Sonam was underway. 'Raj had given Vishal a burqa which he has handed over to Sonam. She wore it, went to the Police Bazaar and took a taxi to Guwahati. From Guwahati, she reached Siliguri (in West Bengal) on a bus. From there, she took buses to go to Patna and Arah and boarded a train for Lucknow. From Lucknow, Sonam took a bus and reached Indore," he said. On June 8, when Sonam had left Indore, two police teams from Meghalaya reached UP and Madhya Pradesh in civil dress. 'When the first arrest (Akash) was made in UP, Raj panicked and told Sonam to call up her family and tell them she just escaped from an abduction gang. That's how this whole thing came to light in Ghazipur," Syiem said. They had thought that Raja's body would not be discovered as it was remote and the police enquiry would take one to two months. So she thought of playing the victim card. 'We are recording their statements. We are questioning them. We will gather more evidence and reconstruct the crime scene," Syiem said. The officer said the police are confident to file a charge sheet in the case within the mandatory 90 days. All five were remanded to eight days of police custody on Wednesday. Meghalaya murder twist: Raja Raghuvanshi's killers planned to burn woman's body, pass it off as Sonam Raghuvanshi
The Meghalaya Police has uncovered a chilling twist in the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi. Investigators revealed that the killers had planned to murder an unidentified woman and burn her body to make it appear as Raja's wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi. The intent, police said, was to buy Sonam more time to remain in hiding before the truth came to light. Vivek Syiem, police superintendent of East Khasi Hills said Raj Kushwaha was the mastermind in the murder plot, and Sonam Raghuvanshi is the co-conspirator, Hindustan Times earlier reported. The entire conspiracy to eliminate Raja Raghuvanshi was decided in Indore, shortly before his wedding. The accused narrated that there were three other plans related to the murder which did not materialise, before Raja was murdered. Syiem said the four arrested killers, including Raj Khushwaha, are the friends of Sonam and Raj, with one of them being the latter's cousin. The planning for murder began in February, three months before the wedding. Sonam emerged in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, around 1,200 km away, on June 9 and surrendered. The officer also said one of the plans was to make people believe that Sonam got washed away by a river, while another plan was to murder any woman, put the person's body in Sonam's scooter, burn it and claim that it was of Sonam. The group arrived a few days before the newlywed couple reached Assam on May 19, and they had initially planned to eliminate Raja somewhere in Guwahati. Since both plans did not fructify, they planned to come to Shillong and then Sohra, reported HT. All of them met at Nongriat, and started together for Weisawdong Falls, and there all three hit Raja with a machete in the parking lot and killed him in front of Sonam, before throwing the body in a gorge. Sonam gave Akash the raincoat she was wearing as his shirt had a blood spot. They left Weisawdong on scooters, and Akash threw the raincoat later as it too had blood stains. Raj gave Sonam a burqa through Vishal Chauhan, and she used it to travel from Shillong to Indore. A tour guide later claimed to have seen Sonam and Raj with three others. Raj told her to leave Indore and reappear in Siliguri, pretending to be an abduction victim. But after Akash's arrest on June 8, Raj panicked and made Sonam call her family and say that she had escaped an abduction. Following this, Sonam appeared in Ghazipur and was later taken into custody.

J&K: ACB arrests revenue official in bribery case
Jammu, June 13 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau on Friday trapped and arrested a revenue official in a bribery case in Poonch district. The official spokesman here said that the ACB received a complaint where it was alleged that the complainant was in need of a revenue record, i.e., attested copies of the Khasra Girdwari of his land situated in Village Dhara, for which he had already applied via online mode on April 26, 2025, but Patwari Mohammad Jameel was demanding a bribe for providing the attested copies of the same. Since the complainant didn't want to pay a bribe, he approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau to take legal action against the accused public servants under the law, he said. The spokesman added that on receipt of the complaint, a discreet verification was conducted, which confirmed the demand for a bribe by the public servant, and accordingly, a case was registered in Police Station ACB Rajouri, and an investigation was taken up. During the course of the investigation, a trap team was constituted, and the team laid a successful trap, and the accused public servant was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe amount of Rs 5,000 from the complainant in the presence of independent witnesses. The accused person was arrested on the spot by the ACB team after following due process of law, and subsequently, a search was also conducted in the residential house of the accused at Poonch.
