Rocket Lab's Electron Strengthens Grip on Small Launch Market

Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (
RKLB
) has emerged as an industry forerunner in the launch and space systems market. In the launch segment, Rocket Lab has built a strong position through its small satellite launch services offered by the Electron rocket, which is currently the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket.
The growing demand for Rocket Lab's services involving its Electron rocket is evident from several recent developments. In February 2025, the company secured a major contract from a Japan-based Earth imaging company, iQPS. This agreement covers eight dedicated Electron launches, with six missions scheduled for 2025 and two in 2026, making it one of the largest Electron launch deals to date. In June, RKLB successfully launched its 68th Electron rocket to deploy a single satellite to space for a confidential commercial customer.
In the same month, Rocket Lab got selected to launch a dedicated Electron mission for the European Space Agency (ESA) for the first time, to deploy the first pair of satellites for a future navigation constellation for Europe. Rocket Lab will conduct these launches, no earlier than December 2025.
With such high-profile contracts in its order book, Rocket Lab's Electron rocket cements its dominance in the small launch market, proving its reliability and scalability as the demand for dedicated, agile satellite deployment grows.
Other Stocks to Keep on the Watchlist
In the modern era of space exploration, factors such as rapid technological advancements, rising demand for satellite deployment, increasing commercial space activities and growing investment in space infrastructure are driving the expansion of the space launch services market.
Apart from RKLB, other industry players like Boeing (
BA
) and Lockheed Martin (
LMT
), which already have a well-established presence in the launch services sector, are also positioned to benefit from these growth trends. Their joint venture, the United Launch Alliance (ULA), has been a key U.S. launch provider, successfully delivering more than 150 Atlas and Delta rockets since its formation in 2006.
ULA's latest offering, the Vulcan rocket, is an evolution of the Atlas V and Delta IV vehicles. It is designed to provide more affordable and accessible launch options for a variety of missions, further strengthening ULA's competitive standing in the market.

After repeated explosions, new test for Musk's megarocket

Elon Musk's SpaceX announced Friday that its Starship megarocket is scheduled to blast off on a new test flight next weekend after recent attempts have ended in fiery explosions. The biggest and most powerful launch vehicle in history is planned to return Americans to the Moon -- and is central to the dreams of colonizing Mars envisioned by Musk, the world's richest person. But repeated explosions that sent debris raining down over Caribbean islands and disrupted flights have piled pressure onto SpaceX to pull off a smoother trial run. The rocket's 10th test flight is set to launch as soon as August 24 from the company's Starbase facility in Texas, SpaceX said on its website. During two test flights earlier this year, the rocket's upper stage -- which is the spacecraft intended to carry crew and cargo -- erupted in fiery cascades not long after launch. Starship managed to make it to space during the last test in late May, however it then blew up when a fuel leak caused it to lose control. The rocket's propulsion system was also supposed to execute a planned splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico -- but it disintegrated before reaching the water. Standing 403 feet (123 metres) tall, the black-and-white behemoth is designed to eventually be fully reusable and launch at relatively low cost. SpaceX has been betting that its 'fail fast, learn fast' ethos -- which helped it dominate commercial spaceflight -- will once again pay off. But the latest string of setbacks, which also includes an explosion during a routine ground test in June, has raised serious questions about Starship's progress. Musk -- who is known for making extremely ambitious proposals -- maintains that the rocket will launch its first uncrewed missions to Mars next year. SpaceX has also been sharply criticized over the impact its launches have on people and the environment near where its rockets blast off. In June, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum threatened to sue SpaceX over falling debris and contamination from its launches. More Starship tests are expected in the coming months, however, after the U.S. aviation regulator approved the number of its annual launches increasing from five to 25.

Gas valve failure during routine maintenance work may have led to fatal explosion, US Steel says

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Preparations for a routine maintenance task may have led to an explosion at a U.S. Steel coal-processing plant near Pittsburgh that left two dead and sent 10 to hospitals, the company said Friday. U.S. Steel said it developed the information, along with other investigators, from reviewing video footage and interviewing employees. That has suggested to them that the explosion happened when workers were flushing a gas valve in preparation for a routine planned maintenance task, the company said. The explosion, which heavily damaged part of the sprawling facility, started around a set of ovens where coal is baked to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit (648.89 Celsius) into a more efficient carbon fuel called coke, a key component in steelmaking. A byproduct of processing the coal is a combustible gas called coke oven gas, made up of a lethal mix of methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. 'Pressure built inside the valve, leading to valve failure and coke oven gas filling the area and ultimately exploding when finding an ignition source,' U.S. Steel said. U.S. Steel didn't say why pressure built inside the valve or what was the ignition source. It said the investigation is in the early stages and that it will provide more information when it can. The United Steelworkers union, which represents workers killed and injured in the explosion, had no immediate comment. The massive plant along the Monongahela River in Clairton is considered the largest coking operation in North America and, along with a blast furnace and finishing mill up the river, is one of a handful of integrated steelmaking operations left in the U.S. The blast was so powerful that it sent a plume of black smoke into the sky, shook the ground and was heard by some people a mile or more away. It took hours to find two missing workers, one dead and one alive, beneath charred wreckage and rubble. The Clairton plant is nearly 110 years old. Japan-based Nippon Steel finalized its acquisition of U.S. Steel in June, winning President Donald Trump's approval after he reversed then-President Joe Biden's decision to block it. To change Trump's mind, Nippon Steel boosted its commitment to invest money into U.S. Steel's aging plants and gave the federal government a say over some matters involving domestic steel production. ___ Follow Marc Levy on X at
