Watch: UAE-made AI robot can now detect suspicious packages from afar
An artificial intelligence-powered robot that can remotely identify threats from suspicious packages — including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) materials from a distance of up to 800 metres, was unveiled by the UAE Ministry of Defence on Tuesday. The Tactical Identification Ground Robot (TIGR) was showcased at the World Crisis and Emergency Management Summit (WCEMS) in Abu Dhabi.
'Instead of sending human personnel, we can deploy the AI robot,' said a Ministry of Defence spokesperson. 'It is equipped with sensors that detect potential threats remotely by transmitting live footage and data back to the operator in real time.'
If TIGR identifies the nature of the threat, the defence team can immediately take action to secure the area. If it cannot determine the exact risk, it is capable of collecting environmental samples, from soil or air, which are then sent directly to the Ministry's laboratories for further analysis.
Designed and built entirely in-house by the Ministry of Defence, the robot has been undergoing testing in emergency drills over the past year. It is expected to be operational within the next six months. 'It is continuously being upgraded. We're exploring enhancements, including increasing its range and adding amphibious capabilities. Science is infinite,' the spokesperson added. 'Fortunately, we haven't needed to deploy it for a real-life threat yet.'

AI and advanced technology dominate "Make it in the Emirates"
Fadhl emphasised that the Ministry places top priority on technological transformation as a core part of its strategy to boost productivity and enhance the UAE's industrial competitiveness. So far, more than 500 factories in the country have been supported in adopting advanced technologies. Broad industrial sector engagement Fadhl highlighted the increasing engagement of technology-focused companies at the forum. He noted that this reflects the continued growth of the industrial sector in the UAE. The Ministry, he said, is driving this transformation through an integrated strategy focused on digitalisation, automation, and overall technological advancement. Forum growth and strategic impact Fadhl shared that the number of exhibitors in this edition surpassed 720 companies spanning 12 industrial sectors. The forum also witnessed strong participation from local and federal entities and banks, all offering enablers and incentives to attract investment. Notably, he announced that the value of purchases directed toward national product localisation has grown to AED 168 billion, up from AED 143 billion the previous year, reinforcing support for UAE-made products. Ministry of Sports Launches 'Sportifai' to Drive Digital Transformation in Sports Sector
The Ministry of Sports has launched Sportifai, a new digital platform aimed at revolutionising sports governance and athlete development across the UAE. Unveiled during the "Driving Digital Transformation in the UAE Sports Sector" workshop, Sportifai will serve as a centralised, AI-powered ecosystem to streamline operations, support talent identification, and enhance performance monitoring. The platform aligns with the UAE's National Sports Strategy 2031 and is part of the government's broader push toward smart governance. Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports, described Sportifai as a 'major leap forward' for the sector, highlighting its ability to boost efficiency and innovation. He noted the platform simplifies access to services for sports federations in line with the Zero Government Bureaucracy programme. 'By integrating data analytics and artificial intelligence, Sportifai allows early detection of promising athletes and supports evidence-based decision-making,' Al Falasi added. The platform will be adopted by all sports federations and clubs, according to Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, Undersecretary of the Ministry. It includes advanced systems for athlete data management, talent scouting, and performance analysis. Sheikh Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum, Assistant Undersecretary for Sports Development and Competitiveness, revealed the platform's brand identity and thanked federation leaders for their collaboration.
