Ex-England pacer Broad keen to take up coaching role

London, Aug 20 (PTI) His illustrious career now a part of England's cricketing folklore, legendary pace bowler Stuart Broad is planning a move towards coaching role where he can some day produce the likes of Jofra Archers and Jimmy Andersons. Broad, the second-highest wicket-taking pace bowler in Test cricket after country-mate Anderson, says he has spoken to Rob Key, managing director of the England cricket team, and expressed his desire to groom the U-17 and U-19 players. "It's certainly something I want to stay connected to, the coaching," Broad, who has taken 604 Test wickets," told The Telegraph. "I've chatted to Rob Key a little bit about doing some stuff with the younger bowlers in the England setups when the schedule suits," added the tall former pacer, who has donned the role of a broadcaster after hanging up his spikes. Broad, who figures in seventh place in the list of all-time highest wicket-takers across formats, added that though he had not set a timeline on taking the plunge into coaching, he was optimistic it could happen as early as next year. "I haven't set any sort of targets or dates of coaching or what's to come, but probably next year I'd start looking at dipping my toe into it a little bit more." Broad was a consultant to the South African cricket team ahead of their World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's, which the Proteas won to clinch their maiden ICC world title. He believes he can play a role in accelerating the development of younger bowlers in the England set-up. "The U19s or even U17s - you really know what you're developing, and you've got your base of technique, but the growth you can make between 15 and 20 is huge." "What excites me the most is, where's the next Jofra Archer? Where's the next Jimmy Anderson? I watched on Instagram, Harry Moore, who's been out with a stress fracture. I look at him and go, 'huge talent, 6ft 6in, swings it both ways, hits good areas'. "Where could he be in four years' time? Maybe even less than that? Where can you spot these players whose ceiling is very high?" Broad says he agrees with Rob Key's plan of engaging stalwarts like Andrew Flintoff and Graeme Swann, among others, to strengthen England cricket. "I'm completely on Rob Key's side. You want your best cricket brains still sharing information to the best players, and you don't want them to be put off by having to jump through loads and loads of hoops that might be a bit unnecessary with the knowledge they've got." Broad's other desire is to become a "really good broadcaster" and believes Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Ravi Shastri has a captivating voice. "The level of analysis that Ricky Ponting gives, the detail that he's going into. The tone of voice with Ravi Shastri – how he can go up and down and pick moments to really go. I'm always looking and learning. "I'm definitely all in on the broadcasting at this moment in time, because I'm certainly not at a level that I'm comfortable with. I want to get better and better and be in those moments where I'm calling great cricket."

Hockey India Announces 18-Member Squad For Men's Asia Cup

Hockey India revealed the 18-member squad for the Hero Men's Asia Cup 2025 in Bihar. Captain Harmanpreet Singh leads a balanced team. Hockey India on Wednesday announced the 18-member Indian Men's Hockey squad for the upcoming Hero Men's Asia Cup, scheduled to be held at the recently developed Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar from 29th August to 7th September 2025. As a qualifier for the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium-Netherlands 2026, the tournament places India in Pool A with Japan, China, and Kazakhstan. India will begin their campaign against China on 29 August, before facing Japan on 31 August and Kazakhstan on 1 September. Veteran drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh will continue to serve as Captain in the continental tournament. The squad overall features a strong group of experienced campaigners, with depth and balance across all departments. The goalkeeping duties will be shared by the dependable Krishan B Pathak and Suraj Karkera. In defence, Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Amit Rohidas will be joined by Jarmanpreet Singh, Sumit, Sanjay, and Jugraj Singh, providing solidity at the back. The midfield engine room comprises Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Rajinder Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, and Hardik Singh. Leading the attack, the forward line will be spearheaded by Mandeep Singh, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, and Dilpreet Singh, offering plenty of firepower to trouble opposition defences. Meanwhile, Nilam Sanjeep Xess and Selvam Karthi have been named as Alternate Athletes. Speaking on the team selection, Indian Men's Team Coach Craig Fulton said, 'We've gone with an experienced squad that understands what it takes to perform in high-pressure situations. The Asia Cup is crucial for us because qualification for the World Cup is at stake, so we needed players who have the composure, resilience, and know-how to deliver. The selection reflects our intent — to put forward a team that can compete strongly and achieve our main objective." 'I'm very pleased with the balance and quality across the squad. We have leaders in every line — defence, midfield, and attack — and that collective strength is what excites me the most. I think the way this team can play together will be our strongest asset," he added. Sunil Gavaskar On Yashasvi Jaiswal Not Being In India Squad For Asia Cup: 'Somebody Has To...'

Last Updated: Sunil Gavaskar avoids commenting on Yashasvi Jaiswal's exclusion from India's Asia Cup 2025 squad. Despite Jaiswal's T20I record, selectors picked Shubman Gill as vice-captain. Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has opted not to comment on the debate surrounding Yashasvi Jaiswal's exclusion from India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025. The cricket legend, renowned for his insightful cricketing opinions, mentioned that while discussions and opinions are common before a squad is finalised, once the selection committee makes its decision, ongoing debates about non-selections only generate unnecessary controversies — something players would rather avoid. Despite being part of India's T20 World Cup 2024-winning squad, Jaiswal did not secure a spot in the Asia Cup team. Instead, the selectors chose to recall Shubman Gill, who was only in the reserves during the World Cup. Gill has not only returned but has also been appointed vice-captain, indicating the trust the selectors and management have in him. The Asia Cup kicks off on September 9 in the UAE, with Gill serving as deputy to newly appointed T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. The decision has sparked debate, especially since both Jaiswal and Gill last played in T20Is in July 2024 before being primarily reserved for ODIs and Tests. Jaiswal's T20I record is notably impressive: 723 runs in 23 matches at a striking rate of 164. Gill, on the other hand, has 578 runs in 21 matches at a strike rate of 139. On paper, Jaiswal's statistics appear superior, raising questions from fans and analysts about his omission. 'You can only pick XI in the match and you can only pick 15 in the squad. Somebody has to miss out, that's just one of those in Indian cricket. No point in discussing whether A or B or C should've been there," Gavaskar was quoted as saying on India Today. 'This is now our team. We can all have our opinions before the selection committee picks the team but once the team is picked, we should back it fully. We shouldn't be saying A should've been there or B should've been there. That only creates controversy, which the players don't need," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
