Hockey India Announces 18-Member Squad For Men's Asia Cup
Hockey India on Wednesday announced the 18-member Indian Men's Hockey squad for the upcoming Hero Men's Asia Cup, scheduled to be held at the recently developed Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar from 29th August to 7th September 2025.
As a qualifier for the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium-Netherlands 2026, the tournament places India in Pool A with Japan, China, and Kazakhstan. India will begin their campaign against China on 29 August, before facing Japan on 31 August and Kazakhstan on 1 September.
Veteran drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh will continue to serve as Captain in the continental tournament. The squad overall features a strong group of experienced campaigners, with depth and balance across all departments.
The goalkeeping duties will be shared by the dependable Krishan B Pathak and Suraj Karkera. In defence, Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Amit Rohidas will be joined by Jarmanpreet Singh, Sumit, Sanjay, and Jugraj Singh, providing solidity at the back.
The midfield engine room comprises Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Rajinder Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, and Hardik Singh. Leading the attack, the forward line will be spearheaded by Mandeep Singh, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, and Dilpreet Singh, offering plenty of firepower to trouble opposition defences.
Meanwhile, Nilam Sanjeep Xess and Selvam Karthi have been named as Alternate Athletes.
Speaking on the team selection, Indian Men's Team Coach Craig Fulton said, 'We've gone with an experienced squad that understands what it takes to perform in high-pressure situations. The Asia Cup is crucial for us because qualification for the World Cup is at stake, so we needed players who have the composure, resilience, and know-how to deliver. The selection reflects our intent — to put forward a team that can compete strongly and achieve our main objective."
'I'm very pleased with the balance and quality across the squad. We have leaders in every line — defence, midfield, and attack — and that collective strength is what excites me the most. I think the way this team can play together will be our strongest asset," he added.

The twists and turns in Indian cricket are never-ending. Such is the nature of a transition period. What has added to the drama is the near-impossible task of playing all three formats. A day after the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee dropped strong hints of making Shubman Gill an all-format captain by appointing the Test skipper as the vice-captain of the Asia Cup-bound T20I side, it has come to light that the board and the selectors are looking at a different option for ODIs. The BCCI is reportedly considering middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer as the next captain of India's ODI team. While no official decision has been made yet, a report in Dainik Jagran indicates that Iyer is being viewed as the long-term option to lead India in the 50-over format, possibly till the 2027 World Cup. Despite that, his recent performances, particularly in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, have strengthened his case. The 30-year-old played a key role in India's title-winning campaign, scoring 243 runs across five matches with consistent knocks of 15, 56, 79, 45 and 48. Having already scored 2845 runs in 70 ODIs at an average of 48.22 with five centuries, Iyer's credentials as a dependable batter are well established. Now, his leadership potential is being seriously considered by BCCI and the team management. However, the timing of Iyer's elevation will hinge on Rohit Sharma's decision regarding his international future. Rohit, who is currently leading the ODI side, turned 38 this year. With him and Virat Kohli already retired from T20s and Tests, speculation is growing that the October ODI series against Australia might mark their final appearance in international cricket. The report added that the BCCI officials are expected to meet after the Asia Cup to discuss the future roadmap, including conversations with Rohit and Kohli. If Rohit decides to step down, Iyer could take over as soon as the Australia series. If not, the transition might be delayed. Why was Shubman Gill not in contention for ODI captaincy? Shubman Gill, who was initially considered a possible all-format captain, is unlikely to take up the ODI leadership role. Despite having served as ODI vice-captain recently and boasting an impressive record in the format, BCCI is leaning toward managing his workload more carefully. Gill, who captained India in Tests during the England series and is now vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav in the T20 setup for the Asia Cup, has already been burdened with significant leadership duties. BCCI sources explained that making one player captain across all formats is not a feasible option in the current cricketing calendar. With tours and tournaments packed throughout the year, the mental and physical demands on a three-format captain would be enormous. Gill is set to lead the Test team against West Indies in early October, just days after the Asia Cup ends. Following that, India will travel to Australia for five T20Is before returning for a full series against South Africa. That schedule alone includes two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is within a short span. Given the back-to-back commitments, Gill's ODI captaincy has been ruled out to prevent burnout and ensure he remains effective in the formats he already leads.

The former selector also questioned the committee's decision on Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder has been included in the squad but has been removed from the vice-captaincy role. But Pandya was also removed from the role already, and it isn't a new development. The last time he was vice-captain was at the 2024 World Cup. 'I don't know why Hardik Pandya has been removed': Madan Lal Speaking to ANI, the 1983 World Cup winner said, 'Sometimes you feel surprised that a player like Yashasvi Jaiswal is not in the team...I don't know why Hardik Pandya has been removed.' 'But Gill is a good choice as he is performing well. In the coming time, it is possible that Gill will play in all three players who make the team win a match must not be left out. ..We have such a good team that we may win the Asia Cup,' he added. Jaiswal has been included in the standby list, along with Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. The 2025 Asia Cup is scheduled to be held in the UAE, from September 9-28, and India are also the defending champions. The Indian squad also includes Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who have formed a dominant opening pair in T20Is over the course of the last eight to ten months. But there are question marks over Samson's role as an opener for the tournament due to the inclusion of Gill, who is now expected to open for India.
