Gold smuggling case plot to sideline Home Minister Parameshwara, claims Kumaraswamy
According to Kumaraswamy, the move is part of an internal power tussle within the ruling Congress party, aimed at derailing Parameshwara's leadership ambitions, news agency PTI reported.

In a strongly worded statement on Friday, Kumaraswamy claimed that Parameshwara's recent outreach, including plans for a Dalit convention and meetings with senior Congress leaders in Delhi—may have unsettled sections within the party. 'This is a clear attempt to tarnish Parameshwara's image and block his ascent within the Congress,' he alleged.
Referring to earlier remarks made by state Minister K N Rajanna in the assembly, about surveillance and manipulation by a powerful political figure, Kumaraswamy said those comments now appear significant in light of current events.
He questioned how the Congress leadership came to know about the alleged smuggling attempt involving Ranya Rao, and whether the Intelligence Department, which reports directly to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, was truly in the dark.
Kumaraswamy also implied that a senior Congress leader, possibly eyeing the Chief Minister's post, could be orchestrating the controversy behind the scenes. He further accused the Congress of diverting attention by blaming the Centre instead of addressing internal fissures.
Responding sharply to the allegations, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar dismissed Kumaraswamy's claims, saying, 'Kumaraswamy has lost his mental balance.' Speaking to reporters in Vijayapura, Shivakumar defended his party and dismissed any suggestion of internal sabotage.
The controversy comes in the wake of the arrest of actress Ranya Rao, the stepdaughter of a senior police officer, at Kempegowda International Airport on March 3. Acting on a tip-off, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 14.2 kg of gold bars worth over ₹12.56 crore from her baggage after she landed from Dubai.

Delhi man rapes his mother after accusing her of having bad character
New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) A 39-year-old man allegedly raped his mother in central Delhi's Hauz Qazi area after she returned from a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, police said on Saturday. According to officials, the complainant, accompanied by her 25-year-old daughter, approached the Hauz Qazi police station and alleged that her son, identified as Md Firoz alias Suhel, had assaulted and sexually abused her on multiple occasions this month. 'The woman stated that she had travelled to Saudi Arabia on July 25 with her husband, aged 72, and their daughter for pilgrimage. During the trip, her son allegedly called on her husband's phone and accused her of having a 'bad character', demanding that his father return immediately to Delhi and divorce her," a senior police officer said. On August 1, after the family returned home, the accused allegedly assaulted his mother and attempted to attack her again the next day. Fearing for her safety, she went to stay at her elder daughter's in-laws' house for some time, the complainant told police. 'She further alleged that on August 11, when she returned home around 9.30 pm, her son insisted on speaking to her privately. He then locked her in a room, threatened her with a knife and scissors, and allegedly raped her," the officer added. Out of fear and shame, she did not disclose the incident immediately and began sleeping in the same room as her daughter, police said. However, around 3.30 am on August 14, the accused allegedly repeated the act, following which the woman gathered courage and approached police. A case has been registered under relevant section of the BNS and investigation has been taken up, the officer said. The accused is a graduate but currently unemployed, while the complainant is an illiterate housewife whose husband is a retired government employee. Take steps to ease tariff pain of exporters, CM urges PM
Chennai: In the wake of the US imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, chief minister M K Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introduce special financial relief measures for exporters. In a letter to Modi, Stalin said, "To provide immediate relief, Union govt needs to consider introducing a special interest subvention scheme for all exporters affected by tariffs to improve liquidity and reduce cost burdens and accelerate Free Trade Agreements and bilateral arrangements to offset high-tariff market risks." Considering the scale of the problem, a special financial relief package including a moratorium on principal repayment, similar to the one implemented during COVID is necessary to support exporters, Stalin said.
