Biometrics, docs confirm 3 slain Pahalgam attackers were Pak nationals: Report

Hindustan Times13 hours ago
Security agencies have confirmed that the three foreign terrorists killed in the Dachigam forest encounter on July 28 were Pakistani nationals, citing biometric evidence and documents issued by the Government of Pakistan, reports news agency PTI. After an intense firefight between terrorists in the Harwan area, three heavily armed terrorists were killed in an encounter under Operation Mahadev.(Basit Zargar/ANI)
The slain men, identified as senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives, were eliminated during 'Operation Mahadev' on the outskirts of Srinagar. They had been hiding in the Dachigam-Harwan forest belt since the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam's Baisaran meadow that left 26 people dead.
Officials told PTI said the evidence collected, including biometric data from Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), laminated voter slips, digital satellite phone data, and GPS logs, conclusively established their Pakistani identity. They confirmed that no local individual was among the attackers.
'For the first time, we have government-issued Pakistani documents that prove the nationality of the Pahalgam attackers beyond doubt,' a senior official said.
The three terrorists were identified as:
Suleman Shah alias Faizal Jatt – A-category terrorist, lead shooter, and mastermind;
Abu Hamza alias Afghan – A-grade commander and second gunman;
Yasir alias Jibran – A-grade commander and third shooter.
Pakistani-issued documents, including two laminated voter slips from the Election Commission of Pakistan, were recovered from the bodies of Shah and Hamza. These slips correspond to voter rolls from Lahore (NA-125) and Gujranwala (NA-79), respectively.
Investigators also recovered a micro-SD card from a damaged satellite phone, containing NADRA-linked Smart-ID data—fingerprints, facial scans, and family trees—verifying the men's citizenship and addresses in Changa Manga (Kasur district) and Koiyan village near Rawalakot in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Additional items recovered included Pakistani-manufactured goods, such as wrappers of 'CandyLand' and 'ChocoMax' chocolates made in Karachi. Lot numbers on the wrappers matched a consignment sent to Muzaffarabad, PoK, in May 2024.
Ballistic analysis confirmed a match between the 7.62x39 mm cartridge casings found at the Baisaran attack site and the three AK-103 rifles recovered from the July 28 encounter. DNA analysis of blood on a torn shirt found in Pahalgam also matched the mitochondrial profiles of the three slain men.
According to officials, the terrorists had infiltrated into India through the Gurez sector of north Kashmir in May 2022, with intelligence intercepts recording their radio check-in from the Pakistani side.
On April 21, the trio took shelter in a seasonal hut near Hill Park, 2 km from Baisaran. Two detained locals—Parvaiz and Bashir Ahmad Jothar—told investigators they had provided food and overnight shelter to the attackers before they proceeded to carry out the massacre the following day.
GPS coordinates retrieved from a Garmin device carried by Shah matched eyewitness reports of firing positions during the attack. After the assault, the terrorists fled towards the Dachigam forest, where they remained hidden until the encounter.
Officials also said a Huawei satellite phone (IMEI 86761204-XXXXXX) used by the attackers was actively pinging the Inmarsat-4 F1 satellite nightly between April 22 and July 25. Triangulation of its signal narrowed their hideout to a four-square-kilometre area within Harwan forest.
Sketches of three suspects—Hashim Musa, Ali Bhai alias 'Talha', and local resident Adil Hussain Thoker—were initially released by Jammu and Kashmir Police on April 24. However, post-encounter verification revealed those images were based on unrelated photographs from a separate shootout in December 2024.
Officials added that command-and-control links traced back to Pakistan further reinforced the country's involvement. LeT's south Kashmir operations chief, Sajid Saifullah Jatt of Changa Manga, Lahore, was identified as the overall handler. His voice samples matched intercepted communications retrieved from the satellite phone.
Following the July 28 encounter, Rizwan Anees, LeT's Rawalakot chief, reportedly visited the families of the slain terrorists and organised Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayers in absentia) on July 29. Footage of this gathering has been added to India's official dossier on the case, officials said.

Anti-drug drive in final phase: Punjab CM

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Ludhiana, Aug 4 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday said his government's anti-drug campaign has entered its final phase, and expressed confidence that newly formed defence committees in villages and cities will play a decisive role in ending drug trafficking in the state. Addressing members of these defence committees, Mann said the Punjab government launched the 'War Against Drugs' campaign on February 4 and has achieved major success in eliminating the roots of the menace. He said the backbone of the drug supply chain has been entirely broken, and he thanked the people of Punjab for their enthusiastic support in this noble mission to save the future generations. Mann said to keep villages and cities drug-free in the future, the government has formed defence committees and said he is fully confident that these committees will act as 'generals" in this war against drugs and safeguard villages and cities. He said each village or ward defence committee will be formed with four core members: the village sarpanch or ward councillor, a representative from the anti-drug campaign, the block development and panchayat officer or their representative, and the SHO or their representative. These committees will include 10 to 20 members, depending on the population, he said, adding that only individuals with clean records and reputation — such as retired army personnel, teachers, and village headmen — will be included. Each committee will be officially notified by the local sub-divisional magistrate, and committee members will be issued special government ID cards. It will facilitate communication with the administration regarding drug-related information or anti-drug activities, he said. Villages and wards will have round-the-clock surveillance to ensure no trafficker dares to operate, he said. The committee members will also assist in drug rehabilitation efforts and help reintegrate former addicts into society, he added. Any village or ward that achieves 100 per cent drug-free status will receive formal recognition and certificates of appreciation from the government, said Mann. 'These committees will raise awareness through street plays and door-to-door campaigns, adding that schools will also conduct awareness programs for children," he said. He noted that more than 10,000 village-level meetings have already been held, and many panchayats have passed resolutions to declare their villages drug-free. He blamed traditional political parties for dragging Punjab into the swamp of drug addiction, saying, 'Had the previous governments restrained drug traffickers, we would not have needed to conduct such programmes today. Governments usually form development committees — not defence committees." Mann said the state government has been forced to form these committees to fight the war against drug dealers. While the incumbent state government is fighting them, traditional parties were 'hand in glove" with them and were offering them protection, he alleged. Without naming anyone, Mann said, 'Important evidence has been found against the jailed former Akali minister, and it will be presented in court." Mann was apparently referring to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia who was arrested in a disproportionate assets case on June 25. Manager of DRDO guest house detained for spying

Jaisalmer: Central intelligence agencies detained on Monday Mahendra Singh, a manager of a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) guest house located near Chandan Field Firing Range, Jaisalmer, on suspicion of espionage for the ISI, Pakistan's intelligence agency. Jaisalmer SP Abhishek Shivhare confirmed the detention, saying that Singh was set to undergo intensive interrogation at the Joint Interrogation Centre here on Tuesday where security and intelligence agencies will collaborate to uncover the full extent of the information he allegedly shared with the ISI. Officials are particularly focused on determining how long this activity has been going on and the nature of the leaked information. Singh, from Almora in Uttarakhand, has been stationed at the guesthouse for the past four to five years and is suspected to have provided sensitive information regarding strategic military operations, including movements and test data pertaining to DRDO, the Indian Army and Air Force, to operatives in Pakistan. The DRDO guest house where Singh is employed is known to accommodate experts and scientists involved in missile and weapon trials at the nearby Pokhran Field Firing Range. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Find the Lowest Auto Insurance Rates in Your Area AutoSaveMax Get Quote Undo The location is significant as it conducts various military exercises and strategic operations throughout the year. Sources suggest Singh may have used a phone number provided by ISI agents operating within India to communicate the information to Pakistani intelligence. Authorities are keen to assess the potential security implications of the breach and concerns about Pakistan's intelligence-gathering efforts along the western border, and the vulnerability of sensitive military installations to espionage attempts.
