India can play enhanced role for peace, stability in West Asia: Iranian envoy
New Delhi [India], July 9 (ANI): Iran's Ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, on Wednesday urged India to play a more significant role in promoting regional peace.
He made the remarks on the sidelines of the event, 'Voices of Conscience: A solidarity gathering for Palestine'.
Speaking with ANI, Ambassador Elahi said India can play an enhanced role in the peace and stability of the region.
'India as a big country, can play a more efficient role for the peace and stability of the region. We believe that there is a grand strategy from the US and Israel. They are going to change the maps of the region by different actions and plans. Any changes in the region, will not be for the benefit of the whole region. We believe that all countries have influence and potential and should do their best to keep the peace and stability of the region,' he said.
He also referred to Chabahar port, a collaborative project between the two countries.
'Chabahar was active and operative during the war. The rate of transit from Chabahar is increasing yearly... Chabahar will be connected to the national railway network in the coming months,' he said, underscoring its role as the 'shortest, cheapest, and safest route' to Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and Eurasia.
India has undertaken to develop the Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar, Iran, by equipping and operating General Cargo and Container Terminal for a period of 10 years, as per the Long Term Main Contract from May 13, 2024.
The Iranian Envoy also talked about his country's conflict with Israel.
'Iran did not request for any ceasefire. If you review the Iranian strike and the Iranian military operation to defend itself, the trend was increasing... We were ready to continue the war and defend ourselves. When they stopped their aggression, we also stopped our retaliation,' he said.
Iraj Elahi accused Israel of 'breaking ceasefires'.
'Israel has broken the ceasefire in Gaza, and in Lebanon too many times.... This is why we are cautious and ready for any scenario,' he said.
Elahi also criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the US and his nomination of former US President Donald Trump for Nobel Peace Prize, calling it a 'misuse of peace and stability.'
'The international community will not accept this propaganda... Netanyahu cannot do genocide in Gaza without the support of the US.'
He also talked of Iran suspending cooperation with IAEA.
'The public opinion of Iran is not satisfied with what they have witnessed from IAEA... Iranian Parliament has passed a bill to stop any cooperation with IAEA,' he said.
Reaffirming Iran's support for the Palestinian cause, the envoy described the situation in Gaza as a 'shameful'.
'The ongoing genocide in Gaza is shameful for all human beings. It is difficult and expressing grief is not enough. Those countries who have good influence and good relations with Israel should convince Netanyahu to stop this genocide,' he said. (ANI)

Activist aid boat approaching Gaza shores, group says
JERUSALEM: The activist group Freedom Flotilla announced Saturday that its latest aid boat dispatched to Gaza was approaching the territory and planned to land there the following morning in defiance of an Israeli blockade. The vessel, named the Handala after a popular Palestinian cartoon character, was just 105 nautical miles (194 kilometres) from its destination, organisers said -- closer to Gaza than its predecessor the Madleen was when it was intercepted in June. The Israeli navy said it would likewise block the new vessel from reaching the war-torn Palestinian territory. "The [Israeli army] enforces the legal maritime security blockade on the Gaza Strip and is prepared for a wide range of scenarios, which it will act upon in accordance with directives of the political echelon," an army spokesperson told AFP on Saturday. Carrying 19 activists and two journalists from various countries, the Handala first set sail from Sicily on July 13 in a bid to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza and deliver aid to its population. The territory is facing severe shortages of food and other essentials, with the United Nations and NGOs warning of an imminent famine. The Handala's crew said in a post on X that they would go on a hunger strike if the Israeli army intercepted the boat and detained its passengers. The last boat sent by Freedom Flotilla, the Madleen, was intercepted by the Israeli army in international waters on June 9 and towed to the Israeli port of Ashdod. "Just spoke to the Prime Minister of Cambodia relative to stopping the War with Thailand. I am calling the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, right now, to likewise request a Ceasefire, and END to the War, which is currently raging. We happen to be, by coincidence, currently dealing on Trade with both Countries, but do not want to make any Deal, with either Country, if they are fighting — And I have told them so!' his post read. Furthermore, Bangkok Post cited the Thai interior ministry as saying that over 100,000 people from four border provinces of the country had been moved to nearly 300 temporary shelters, while the kingdom's health ministry announced that the death toll had risen to 14- thirteen civilians and one soldier. Thailand's Royal Army has denied reports from Cambodia that it targeted an ancient Hindu Temple in the Cambodian province of Preah Vihear, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Thailand and Cambodia have frequently clashed over their shared land border, a dispute that reportedly remains unresolved due to competing territorial claims dating back to the French colonial era.
