Springbok debutants: Who FIRED, who FLOPPED
Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus rewarded Vincent Tshituka, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Cobus Wiese and Ethan Hooker their respective Bok debuts during the home series against Italy in South Africa.
So, who stood up and stood out and who failed to make a good first impression?
Vincent Tshituka – 8/10
Tshitshuka made his unofficial debut against the Barbarians in Cape Town before making his Test debut against Italy at Loftus on Saturday, 5 July 2025. The elusive Sharks forward was as good in his official debut, if not, better than he was in the Boks' first match against the Barbarians.
Tshituka was a constant threat in open play, showcasing his speed, versatility and off-loading ability. Meanwhile, he was a nuisance for both the Barbarians and Italy at the breakdown. Tshitshuka's talent is matched by his hard work. He is as skilful as he is hard-working. He has certainly put his hand up for selection under Rassie Erasmus going forward.
Asenathi Ntlabakanye – 6/10
Ntlanakanye made some heavy carries. Whilst his 140kg+ frame added some heavy mass to an already powerful Springboks scrum, this set piece did not always gain such noticeable power (as it did when Ox Nche came on).
Cobus Wiese – 5.5/10
Gave away a penalty for not releasing early on. Furthermore, he also failed to regulalry get over the advantage line. So, while he did not do much wrong, his Bok debut will not cause Rassie and the selection team any selection headaches.
Ethan Hooker – 6.5/10
Of the Bok debutants who played against Italy in the second Test, Hooker showed the most promise. He made some good carries and was solid defensively. However, he will need more time to find his feet in the green and gold.

Kaizer Chiefs news: New striker to be sacrificed?
Kaizer Chiefs could look to sacrifice striker Tashreeq Morris after just seven months at the club. The 31-year-old forward has struggled to find his feet at Naturena, having signed from SuperSport in January. Morris only scored once for Chiefs in the nine matches he played for the club last season. According to Soccer Laduma , Kaizer Chiefs are set to make changes to the attacking department, with indications that Tashreeq Morris could be sacrificed. 'The technical team wants to have strikers with wingers believed to be playing a part in the attack. In their restructuring of the squad, they are believed to be looking at releasing one or two strikers, with Tashreeq Morris' name being bandied about. We will see after the pre-season for the final decision on which strikers will be sacrificed,' a source revealed to Siya crew. 'As much as the team is believed to be looking at releasing strikers, they are still looking at signing at least one more attacking midfielder. They are talking about a winger or another number 10. I think that could be last signing for this window,' the source added. So far, seven players have left Kaizer Chiefs in the last seven weeks. Kolisi makes first appearance of season
MBOMBELA - Captain and flanker Siya Kolisi will make his first appearance of the season when Rugby World Cup holders South Africa face Georgia in Mbombela on Saturday in a one-off Test. A stiff neck ruled the two-time World Cup winner out of an exhibition match win over the Barbarians in Cape Town last month. Kolisi then sustained an Achilles tendon "niggle" and head coach Rassie Erasmus opted not to risk the veteran in a 2-0 Test series victory over Italy this month. He returns as the Springboks seek to maintain a 100 percent record against the Lelos, having beaten them comfortably in a 2003 World Cup pool match in Australia and a 2021 Test in Pretoria. "We wanted to make sure that Siya is 100 percent fit before selecting him, so it is great to have him back in the squad," said Erasmus after naming his matchday 23. Props Boan Venter and Neethling Fouche as well as hooker Marnus van der Merwe will all make their Test debuts in the northeastern city. "Boan, Marnus, and Neethling have been training hard and deserve their chances," said Erasmus, a key coaching figure in the 2019 and 2023 World Cup triumphs. "Marnus and Neethling played against the Barbarians, so they have an idea of what international rugby is about. "Boan has shown great potential at club level (for Edinburgh) and with the squad in the last few weeks, and we are looking forward to seeing him play.
