Enzo Maresca issues two-man Chelsea injury update with double blow confirmed for Club World Cup semi-final
James was set to start at the Lincoln Financial Field, but withdrew from the team shortly before kick-off.

With Moises Caicedo suspended and Romeo Lavia injured, the Chelsea captain had initially been earmarked to partner Enzo Fernandez in midfield.
However, his absence meant Andrey Santos was handed his first start for the Blues.
Speaking after the game, the Chelsea boss delivered an update on James and Lavia ahead of next week's semi-final showdown against Fluminense.
Maresca said: 'Romeo [Lavia], unfortunately, he had a small muscle problem.
'And Reece, he felt something during the warm-up. We think that it's tightness, so we prefer not to take any risk for him. And we decided to start with Andrey [Santos].

'I think now we are one year together. We know each other much, much better compared to one year ago.
'And with different structure, different way to play, I think the players, they are getting better and better.'

It remains to be seen if James or Lavia will be fit to face the Brazilian side on Tuesday, but the Blues have been handed a further blow with Liam Delap and Levi Colwill ruled out through suspension.
The pair were walking the disciplinary tight-rope ahead of the game and their punishment for being booked in the 45th and 86th minute respectively is a one-game ban.
Though, the good news for Chelsea is Caicedo is in line for an immediate recall after serving his suspension against Palmeiras.

With Micah Parsons officially requesting a trade from the Dallas Cowboys, an old clip of his father, Terrence Parsons, talking about preferred destinations for his son in a hypothetical trade scenario has resurfaced. "I know Pittsburgh fans are like, 'whoa,' but I'm sorry, him [Micah Parsons] and [T.J.] Watt together would be like cheating," Terrence Parsons said. "Him and [Aidan] Hutchinson together in Detroit would be like cheating. I love it. Kansas City, that's who they are right now." Parsons requested a trade out of Dallas due to the franchise's lack of communication with his agent. The 26-year-old's relationship with the Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones seems to be completely destroyed. Dallas has no plans of trading Parsons, but if they can't agree on a long-term extension with him, they may be forced to move him at some point. Parsons' father's landing spots for the four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher are bold. Adding Parsons to Kansas City's defense would be lethal, while pairing the disgruntled Cowboy with Watt or Hutchinson in Detroit would also be pretty much unstoppable. However, none of the teams Parsons' dad listed as preferred spots have the money to sign Parsons to a record-breaking extension. The Chiefs are slated to have negative $61 million in cap space next offseason, and the Steelers already have two expensive edge rushers in Watt and Alex Highsmith. As for the Lions, the team must prioritize getting an extension done with Hutchinson first, which likely takes them out of the running for Parsons. It's possible that Parsons lands with one of three destinations his dad spoke about during a podcast appearance last year, as all three franchises are playoff contenders, and two are legitimate Super Bowl contenders in Kansas City and Detroit. However, it remains to be seen whether any have the money to sign Parsons to a new deal after trading valuable picks for him while also keeping their core together. Saskatchewan Roughriders visit Montreal Alouettes in clash of CFL heavyweights
MONTREAL — The top two teams in the CFL standings don't have a lot in common — except for the fact they just keep finding ways to win. The 6-1 Saskatchewan Roughriders will visit the 5-2 Montreal Alouettes on Saturday in a clash between two teams riding win streaks and finding success in very different ways. As such, it should come as no surprise that there was plenty of high praise to go around from either side leading up to the matchup. 'They're physical up front, for sure,' said Alouettes head coach Jason Maas. 'I think they tackle extremely well in the secondary as well. I think they are a physical group, and they play with a lot of confidence. They fly around. You've got to really protect the ball against them, but I think it starts up front for them.' 'They're well-coached, obviously,' countered Roughriders head coach Corey Mace. 'They try to take away things that teams are really good at. They're fast as ever, they're relentless to the football. "They do a good job causing turnovers and causing confusion. They've got enough guys in the back end that can cover a lot of ground as well. They do a good job.' Both teams come in on two-game winning streaks. Montreal pulled off comeback wins over Toronto and Calgary, despite holding the lead for just 6:38 across both games combined. Saskatchewan, meanwhile, bounced back from its only loss of the season — a 33-31 setback against Calgary on July 12 — with narrow wins over B.C. and Edmonton. Five of the Riders' six victories have come by seven points or fewer. Saskatchewan will be without standout receiver Samuel Emilus on Saturday. The Montreal native was placed on the six-game injured list after suffering a knee injury late in last week's win over the Elks. He will be replaced by 26-year-old Canadian slotback Tommy Nield, who is making his first start of the season after missing the first six games with an ankle injury. Montreal will once again turn to veteran quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson on Saturday in the absence of starting pivot Davis Alexander. The 37-year-old picked up his first win in three starts with Montreal last week, completing 30 of 40 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown in his team's 23-21 win over the Stampeders. Lemon played parts of the last two seasons with Montreal, helping the team to a Grey Cup championship in 2023. The 36-year-old was suspended indefinitely in April 2024 for gambling on league games while with Calgary in 2021, including one game in which he played. Lemon also served a two-game suspension after testing positive for the banned stimulant phentermine, an appetite suppressant. After being reinstated last month, the veteran signed a contract with the Alouettes through the remainder of the 2025 season. Maas praised Lemon's fitness level, vowing to use him in 'his fair share of plays' throughout Saturday's contest. 'It's good to have him back,' added Alouettes defensive lineman Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund, who played with Lemon in both Calgary and Montreal. 'It's always next man up here, so just to get another veteran presence is awesome. You know what he can do on the field, and it's just going to help us tenfold.' Can Jhoan Duran's 100 mph fastball and Harrison Bader's defense lead Phillies to a World Series?
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Harrison Bader got a first-hand look at Jhoan Duran's electric stuff — try a four-seam fastball that averages 100.2 mph — in their short stint together in Minnesota. Bader saw enough to know the Phillies might have finally landed the closer that can put them over the top and win the franchise's first World Series title since 2008. 'Plain and simple, he has close-the-door stuff,' Bader said. 'Tough situation, runner on, maybe baseball happens, he kind of puts a couple runners on. He's got strikeout stuff to strike out three in a row. I've seen it all year. I've seen it on the other side.' Bader and Duran both joined the Phillies on Friday for the start of a three-game series against Detroit. Bader, a right-handed hitting outfielder, and Duran were both acquired on consecutive days in separate trades with the Minnesota Twins. They are now thrust into the thick of a pennant race. Duran's role is settled. He's the closer — the Phillies tested out his fire entrance on the big screen ahead of his debut. The 27-year-old Duran — nicknamed Durantulla and he wore spider cleats on Friday — had 16 saves and a 2.01 ERA in 49 appearances this season, striking out 53 in 49 1/3 innings. 'It's an honor to be part of this team,' Duran said. 'I know here I've got a chance to win the World Series.' The 31-year-old Bader, a 2021 Gold Glove winner, remains a strong defender at all three outfield spots and has 12 home runs, 38 RBIs and a .778 OPS in 96 games. The right-handed hitting Bader will start his Phillies career in a center field platoon with Brandon Marsh. The left-handed hitting Marsh got the start Friday against Tigers righty Jack Flaherty. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said he planned a double-platoon in the outfield (slugger Nick Castellanos is entrenched in right field). Because the Phillies are scheduled to face alternating right- and left-handed pitchers over the next six games with Detroit and Baltimore, Bader and Marsh will platoon over that stretch. Same with lefty-swinging Max Kepler and Otto Kemp in left field. How well they hit over that small sample size could decide Thomson's lineup for the pennant stretch as the Phillies chase the New York Mets in the NL East. Thomson said he hadn't ruled out Bader in left field, 'but I see him sort of as the best center fielder we've got.' Duran's 100.2 mph average velocity for his four-seam fastball is second to Mason Miller's 101.1 mph among those who have thrown 200 or more pitches. Duran isn't eligible for free agency until after the 2027 season. Duran joins a Philly bullpen that also has Matt Strahm and Orion Kerkering. David Robertson is ramping up with Triple-A Lehigh Valley after signing a one-year contract on July 21, and José Alvarado is expected to return from an 80-game suspension for a positive test for external testosterone. Duran was acquired by Minnesota in a deal with Arizona at the 2018 trade deadline. He is 17-23 with a 2.47 ERA and 74 saves in 223 career games.
