INDIA bloc considers legal action, rallies over Bihar voter rolls revision
On Thursday, a senior alliance leader said that if the Election Commission continues with the revision process without ensuring safeguards, they would be left with no option but to seek legal recourse. Congress leader Pawan Khera, when asked about the possibility of going to court, said all options remain open.During the nearly three-hour-long meeting with the Election Commission on Wednesday, the delegation raised strong objections to the timing and implementation of the SIR. Congress spokesperson and senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi alleged that the revision exercise, being conducted months before the state goes to polls, threatens to disenfranchise a minimum of two crore voters, particularly among Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, migrant workers, and those from impoverished backgrounds.Singhvi argued that many voters would not be able to produce their or their parents' birth certificates on such short notice and risk having their names removed from the voter list. He also warned that there would be no way to challenge such deletions once the model code of conduct is in place and courts stop entertaining election-related pleas.Questioning the timing of the SIR, Singhvi pointed out that the last such revision in Bihar was in 2003. 'For 22 years, after four or five elections, were all those elections faulty or unreliable?' he asked. He also termed the exercise an attack on the Constitution, calling it a move towards disenfranchisement and disempowerment. The Congress, RJD, and other INDIA bloc parties have intensified their opposition to the SIR, which has already started in Bihar and is expected to be rolled out in five other poll-bound states - Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal - next year.RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav earlier stated that his party would take to the streets in protest if the names of the poor are arbitrarily removed from the electoral rolls.- EndsMust Watch

Gods dwell where women are honoured: Telangana HC CJ
Gods dwell where women are honoured: Judge Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul of the Telangana High Court has said that true empowerment of women requires respect at home, the workplace and in society. Speaking at a felicitation organised by the High Court's Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC), he referred to the saying, 'where women are honoured, there the gods dwell.' Justice Paul noted the rise in women judges in Madhya Pradesh and Telangana and called for similar progress elsewhere. He drew a parallel between preserving nature and valuing women for societal growth. Justice T Madhavi Devi, GSICC chairperson, said the committee promotes gender equality, awareness and fair treatment. Formed in June 2023, it has received two complaints, both resolved. Quoting Vivekananda, she said global welfare needs gender balance, adding that many women remain silent due to stigma. Justice Juvvadi Sridevi praised GSICC's role in promoting a safe workplace and highlighted digital harassment concerns post-COVID. Counsel: Decisions predate Srilakshmi's tenure Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana High Court on Thursday adjourned hearing on a Criminal Revision Petition filed by IAS officer Y Srilakshmi to July 10. The petition relates to the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) illegal mining case. The SC had remanded the matter to the HC, observing that the earlier order had not fully considered the CBI's submissions. Srilakshmi, an Andhra Pradesh-cadre officer, is an accused in the case involving alleged illegal mining. A CBI special court earlier dismissed her discharge plea, which was allowed by the High Court. The CBI challenged this in the Supreme Court, which set aside the High Court order. Senior counsel K Vivek Reddy, appearing for Srilakshmi, argued that the allegations were unfounded, pointing out that her tenure as secretary began in May 2006 and key decisions predate this. He also submitted that 'captive mining' was formalised only in 2015 and that the CBI had not initially named her in the FIR or first chargesheet. Malla Reddy colleges' plea for additional seats rejected The Telangana High Court has dismissed appeals filed by the Malla Reddy group of colleges seeking allotment of additional seats. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice J Sree Devi Renuka upheld an earlier decision by Justice K Lakshman rejecting the writ petitions. Senior counsels S Niranjan Reddy and D Prakash Reddy, appearing for the colleges, argued that the state had selectively granted additional seats to other colleges and denied their clients on alleged political grounds, in violation of Article 14 of the Constitution. Advocate General A Sudarshan Reddy, representing the state, submitted that seat allotments were made considering local demand, infrastructure and educational needs. He said institutions granted additional seats were in different areas and there was no case for expansion at Malla Reddy colleges. The bench agreed there was no illegality or arbitrariness in the decision-making process and dismissed the appeals.

Rahul attacks Modi govt over Maha farmer suicides
New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday attacked the Modi government over farmer suicides in Maharashtra, saying that it remains indifferent to farmers' plight, even as they are sinking deeper into debt every day. In a post on X in Hindi, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha accused the government of ignoring farmers' demands for a loan waiver and a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for crops. On Wednesday, opposition members walked out of the Maharashtra Assembly twice over issues of farmer suicides and non-payment of dues to soybean cultivators in the state. 'This system is killing farmers -- silently, but continuously and Modi ji is watching the spectacle of his own PR,' Gandhi said. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar claimed in the assembly that 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra between January and March this year. While 200 cases were declared ineligible for aid, inquiries are pending in 194 cases, he said. Gandhi also shared a screenshot of a news report which put the number of farmer suicides in Maharashtra in the first three months at 767. 'Think about it... in just 3 months, 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra. Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 destroyed homes. 767 families that will never be able to recover. And the government? It is silent. It is watching indifferently,' the former Congress president said. Farmers are sinking deeper into debt every day as seeds, fertilizers and diesel are expensive. 'But there is no guarantee of MSP. When they demand a loan waiver, they are ignored,' he charged. 'But (what about) those who have crores? The Modi government easily waives their loans. Just look at today's news -- Anil Ambani's Rs 48,000 crore SBI 'fraud',' he said. 'Modi ji had said that he would double the income of farmers. Today the situation is such that the life of the farmer is being halved. BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya hit back, sharing a chart on X which claimed that 55,928 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra during the 15-year tenure of the NCP-Congress government. 'The politics of counting the dead is disgusting, but it is necessary to show the mirror to people like Rahul Gandhi,' Malviya said.
