Zahid: Build depot to boost rubber production in Sarawak
He said the proposed depot will be built in the Samarahan Division.
He added that the depot was expected to enhance the efficiency of Sarawak's rubber supply chain, and support smallholders in marketing their products.
"Currently, we plan to build two such depots in each state. In Sarawak, one will be in Samarahan, while the location for the second is yet to be determined," he told reporters, after attending the Sarawak Risda 2025 smallholders programme and Pre-Gawai Day celebration, here, today.
Zahid, who is also rural and regional development minister, also highlighted that Malaysia spends RM6 billion annually on rubber imports, to meet the needs of the country's industries.
He added that to reduce dependency on imports, Risda has been tasked with strengthening efforts to boost local latex production.
"Currently, 87 per cent of the country's rubber output comes from smallholders, with only about 13 per cent from large plantations. This shows how heavily we rely on smallholders.
"Risda is responsible for coordinating engagement sessions with smallholder associations and individual smallholders, to increase latex production," he said.
At present, Sarawak has approximately 161,000ha of rubber plantations, with more than 98,000 smallholders involved in the sector.

Poverty eradication drive pushes stronger actions
Mega initiative: Ahmad Zahid speaking at the Karnival Mega 3 Dimensi (MK3D) press conference at the Parliament Building, Kuala Lumpur. MK3D is an initiative to unite entrepreneurship programmes under one holistic platform. — Bernama PUTRAJAYA: The People's Well-being Initiative (Sejahtera Madani) needs strong follow-through to ensure its success in eradicating urban poverty, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. While the initiative is a positive development, he said it must be followed through with comprehensive actions to ensure lasting impact for those in need. 'As often said, we cannot just give a man a fish – we must give him a fishing rod so that he can catch fish on his own. 'In other words, the programme must be long-term and include joint monitoring by the private sector, government-linked companies, government-linked investment companies and other bodies. This is a good approach,' he told the media after the launch of the initiative by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim here yesterday as reported by Bernama. Ahmad Zahid said the Sejahtera Madani Fund, which has raised nearly RM120mil, covers not only financial aid but also goods, services and training. He said the initiative is a commendable effort coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department. Sejahtera Madani is a national initiative aimed at assisting poor and hardcore poor households registered under the National Poverty Database (eKasih system). The initiative brings together various forms of aid interventions across ministries, agencies and the private sector to eradicate poverty in a focused and integrated manner. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said Sejahtera Madani is a national initiative specifically designed to assist poor and hardcore poor households. He said such programmes are in line with the Fifth Core of the Public Service Reform Agenda, which is to strengthen synergy between the public and private sectors, particularly involving corporate bodies such as government-linked companies, government-linked investment companies, companies limited by guarantee and statutory bodies. 'The implementation chain of such programmes must continue to be strengthened, in line with the whole-of-nation approach that emphasises the spirit of unity and consensus, in accordance with the principle of ihsan, which underpins the Madani values,' he said.

Sejahtera Madani drives efforts to eradicate poverty
The Sejahtera Madani initiative is the main driving force behind the government's efforts to eradicate hardcore poverty, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said the initiative includes financial assistance and support in goods, services, and training. "This is a positive effort coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department (ICU). In addition to the existing poverty eradication programme, we will focus on addressing urban poverty," he said on Thursday (July 24) after launching the Sejahtera Madani programme at the Seri Perdana Kompleks. Sejahtera Madani is a programme run by the ICU to assist poor and hardcore households registered in the eKasih system. The Deputy Prime Minister added that the initiative is a step forward in addressing hardcore poverty but stressed the need for follow-up actions by the government. "Normally, when we want to tackle poverty, we should view it this way: we shouldn't just try to give fish, we need to give the fishing rod so the people will know how to fish," he said. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the national initiative aims to fight hardcore poverty. "Programmes like this align with our public service reform agenda, which is to strengthen synergy between the public and private sector, especially those linked to GLCs, GLiCs, and others," he said. More than 30 companies, including the Weststar Group, YTL Corporation Berhad, Berjaya Corporation Berhad, MMC Corporation Berhad, and Genting Berhad, have contributed to the initiative. Earlier, Anwar announced that more than RM120mil was collected under the newly launched Sejahtera Madani initiative.

KKDW Committed To Improving SOPs For Selected Pre-Q Procurement Method
PUTRAJAYA, July 24 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) is committed to improving the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines, for the implementation of the Selected Pre-Qualified Open Tender Procurement (Selected Pre-Q Procurement or TTPKT) method. This follows the remarks and recommendations made by the National Audit Department (JAN) in the 2025 Auditor General's Report (LKAN) Series 2, on the activities of ministries, departments, statutory bodies, and federal government companies. According to KKDW, the Selected Pre-Q Procurement method has been implemented in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). 'This method is a pilot initiative introduced to accelerate the implementation of infrastructure projects for the benefit of the people. Naturally, as a new pilot approach, it is not without its shortcomings,' the ministry said, in a statement, today. In addition, KKDW has adopted best practices from the Public Works Department (JKR), which serves as the primary Technical Department. KKDW clarified that there were no financial implications or losses to the government based on the audit findings. However, the ministry acknowledged that several areas require improvement. The ministry also welcomed and concurred with the Auditor General's recommendation that, should the government decide to continue with the Selected Pre-Q Procurement method, necessary enhancements must be implemented to address current shortcomings. 'KKDW remains committed to ensuring that all procurement processes for rural development are carried out with full accountability and transparency, in line with sound public financial management and best governance practices,' it added. The 2025 Auditor-General's Report (LKAN) Series 2, tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on July 21, revealed that three ministries failed to meet the objectives of implementing the Selected Pre-Q Procurement method, which was intended to expedite procurement processes and accelerate project implementation, including high-impact projects and those under the Jana Wibawa initiative, which were later cancelled.
