Alas Pilipinas Women sweep New Zealand to bolster AVC Nations Cup semis drive
The Filipinas rebounded from a tough five-set loss to Iran to keep their semifinals hopes alive with a 3-1 card in Pool B while New Zealand fell to a 1-2 record.
Vanie Gandler and Eya Laure led the charge for the youthful Alas as they both churned out 12 points with the latter also shining on defense with eight digs and nine receptions.
Alyssa Solomon, who didn't see action in that defeat at the hands of the Iranians, returned in fashion as the former NU standout tallied 11 points on nine attacks, one block, and one ace.
Alas took advantage of an error-plagued New Zealand in the endgame and established a slim 21-18 lead in the fourth set. But the fired-up Filipinas unleashed a 4-0 closing run instigated by a service error from New Zealand's Charlton Vail.
Gandler then unloaded a service ace before an attack error from Petra Manderson saw the Philippines clinching the match point at 24-18. Another faulty attack from Katherine Adamson sealed it for Alas as they bolster their semis contention.
Vail paced New Zealand with 11 points while Manderson chipped in nine markers.

The Alas Pilipinas Men recently wrapped up their training in Romania and will head to Portugal for the third leg of their camp. Last week, the team also trained in Morocco. Bryan Bagunas, one of the Alas Pilipinas veterans, shared a glimpse of what their training camp looks like. 'We eat together, train hard together and push each other,' Bagunas said in a release from the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF). 'Training here is intense in the morning and in the afternoon session, we focus on strength, conditioning and game systems,' he added. Bagunas is part of the Philippines' wide roster recently released by World Volleyball for the global tourney. 'Coach Angiolino has been pushing us to be disciplined and smart on the court, and I think that's making a big difference in our preparation." The Philippines will open its campaign in the World Championship against Tunisia on September 12, leaving the national team with less than a month of preparations. Meet Koolog, Hataw, and Kidlat — the mascots for the 2025 FIVB Men's World Championship
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) kicked off the month-long countdown to the 2025 FIVB Men's World Championship in the Philippines. On Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia, the sports body also introduced the official mascots for the global event. Meet Koolog, Hataw, and Kid Lat. Koolog sounds like the Filipino word for thunder (kulog), while Kid Lat resembles the Filipino word for lightning. Hataw, meanwhile, is a ball-shaped mascot whose name could be from the Filipino word for "hit." More than just introducing the mascots, PNVF president Ramon "Tats" Suzara said the Philippines is preparing to showcase the country's best to the global volleyball community. 'Volleyball fans, we are very grateful. We've poured everything into this, battled through every obstacle to deliver this event, and we expect to see you all during the matches,' Suzara said during the 'Set Natin 'To' launch event. 'Our Alas Pilipinas is grinding it out to be worthy to take this floor. Join us for 17 days of top-level volleyball.' Philippine Sports Commission chair Patrick Gregorio said the hosting will also boost the country's sports tourism efforts. 'We have to do this so well, we have to do this telling the world that this is the Philippines, we can host properly, this is the showcase of our nation, we are a very beautiful sports tourism destination,' Gregorio said. 'I think we all realize that maybe this will not happen again in our lifetime. Pagbutihan po natin, magsama-sama po tayo, magtulong-tulong po tayo because 'Set na natin 'to.' Alas Pilipinas Women repeat over Indonesia to claim 4th straight SEA V. League bronze
The Alas Pilipinas Women stood their ground in the endgame to complete a 25-17, 25-17, 28-16 win against Indonesia and capture the bronze medal in the 2025 SEA V. League Leg 2 on Sunday in Vietnam. The win allowed the Filipinas to seize the country's fourth straight third-place finish as the Indonesians settled for fourth place for the fourth time in a row. The victory, however, wasn't without a scare as Alyssa Solomon had to be stretchered off the court after suffering an apparent left knee injury while attempting to save a Megawati Pertiwi attack, with Alas leading 17-11 in Set 1. But the Filipinas powered through and closed out the opening frame before dominating Set 2 behind Eya Laure, Bella Belen, Angel Canino, and Shaina Nitura, who stepped in for the injured Solomon. Alas then had a slow start to the third set with Devega Salsabila bringing the Indonesians to a 14-10 cushion before another kill from her made it a 16-13 lead. Belen then led a 4-2 rampage to cut the deficit to a solitary point, 17-18, but Indonesia clinched a crucial 22-20 lead following a strong open kill from Mediol Yoku. Laure converted three straight attacks to tie things up at 23-all, but her service error saw Indonesia take the set point. Belen breathed life into Alas by scoring two consecutive points, including a hammer from the left wing that sent Alas to the match point at 25-24. Indonesia would force another deadlock and even took another set point after a service ace from Putri Agustin, 26-25. Belen and Canino, however, delivered the next two points before Salsabila went wide on her final attack as Alas completed the hard-fought sweep. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
