Alas Pilipinas falls short vs Vietnam in SEA V.League

The Alas Pilipinas Women fell short against Vietnam, 25-14, 30-28, 25-22, on Friday to open its Leg 2 campaign in the SEA in Ninh Binh, Vietnam. After a slow start that led to a dominant first set win for the host country, the Philippines made sure to give the Vietnamese squad a tough challenge in its home stand. In the third set, Vietnam was leading 19-15 before the Philippines went on a 4-0 run, with Alas capitalizing on their opponents' errors. Vietnam then broke the dry spell and pulled ahead, 21-19, before Eya Laure and Cla Loresco tied the set. Thi Kieu Trinh Hoang then scored for Vietnam before errors plagued Alas' late-game rally. An error, this time from the Vietnam side, gave a glimmer of hope for the Philippines, but a back row attack from Thi Nhu Quynh Vi sealed the victory for the hosts. In the first leg, Vietnam also defeated Alas in four sets. Prior to the match, some changes were made to the lineup, with Loresco and Maddie Madayag coming in for Thea Gagate and Leila Cruz. Alas Pilipinas Women sweep New Zealand to bolster AVC Nations Cup semis drive

Alas Pilipinas Women are back to their winning ways after overwhelming New Zealand, 25-17, 25-21, 25-18, to remain alive in the 2025 AVC Women's Volleyball Nations Cup on Wednesday at the Dong anh Gymnasium in Vietnam. The Filipinas rebounded from a tough five-set loss to Iran to keep their semifinals hopes alive with a 3-1 card in Pool B while New Zealand fell to a 1-2 record. Vanie Gandler and Eya Laure led the charge for the youthful Alas as they both churned out 12 points with the latter also shining on defense with eight digs and nine receptions. Alyssa Solomon, who didn't see action in that defeat at the hands of the Iranians, returned in fashion as the former NU standout tallied 11 points on nine attacks, one block, and one ace. Alas took advantage of an error-plagued New Zealand in the endgame and established a slim 21-18 lead in the fourth set. But the fired-up Filipinas unleashed a 4-0 closing run instigated by a service error from New Zealand's Charlton Vail. Gandler then unloaded a service ace before an attack error from Petra Manderson saw the Philippines clinching the match point at 24-18. Another faulty attack from Katherine Adamson sealed it for Alas as they bolster their semis contention. Vail paced New Zealand with 11 points while Manderson chipped in nine markers. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
