USC football countdown to kickoff—Dion Bailey in focus
Position: Linebacker/safety
Years played at USC: 2010-2013
Career highlights: Bailey arrived at USC as a safety and redshirted his first year on campus in 2010. Prior to the 2011, he was converted to linebacker, where he earned a starting role and impressed, earning freshman All-American honors. He returned as a starter at linebacker in 2012, before switching back to safety in 2013.
Bailey finished his time in Cardinal and Gold with 221 total tackles, 11 interceptions, 3.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. Of those picks, perhaps none was bigger than the one in the Trojans' 2013 upset of No. 4 Stanford. With the game tied at 17 in the fourth quarter, the Cardinal had a second and goal from the Trojans' ten yard-line. Bailey picked off Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan's pass, keeping the score knotted. USC would go on to earn a 20-17 victory on a last-second field goal by kicker Andre Heidari.
After USC: Following his redshirt junior season in 2013, Bailey declared for the 2014 NFL Draft, despite not being projected as a high draft pick. He went undrafted and signed as a free agent with the Seattle Seahawks. In Seattle, Bailey finally got to play with Pete Carroll, the head coach who recruited him to USC, but left prior to his freshman year.
Bailey appeared in seven NFL regular games with the Seahawks and the New York Jets. He finished his professional career with 22 tackles, two passes defended, and 0.5 sacks. He was released by New York prior to the start of the 2016 season.

Former USC quarterback Cody Kessler shares advice for current Trojans QB Jayden Maiava
Heading into the 2025 season, Jayden Maiava enters his first full year as USC's starting quarterback. Maiava started the final four games of 2024 for the Trojans, and is now the heavy favorite to be the guy in 2025. So what can Maiava expect this fall? On a recent episode of the Victory Podcast, USC Athletics's official podcast, former USC quarterback Cody Kessler, who co-hosts the show with team reporter Keely Eure, shared his advice for the current USC QB heading into the 2025 season. "This is your one shot to go out there and prove that you can be the guy at USC," Kessler said. "That you deserve to be the starting quarterback for the University of Southern California. There is a lot of pressure that comes with that. There's a lot of scrutiny . . . as a competitor, as a leader, as a quarterback, you don't want it any other way. "What I did, and this is my message to Jayden . . . I trusted my coaches, you know, I leaned on my teammates, but I blocked everything else out . . . I focused on what mattered. And that was my teammates, my coaches, and the Trojan Family. Nothing else mattered. "This is your one opportunity to go be great. What type of legacy do you want to leave here at USC?" Maiava's performance in the four games that he started last season was inconsistent. He had some great moments, but also some rather head-scratching plays. If Maiava can clean up his play in 2025, he has the chance to emerge as one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten.

Should Tyrese Maxey be the one to take the last shot for Sixers?
Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is one of the rising stars in the league. At just 24, he has already been named an All-Star and has a Most Improved Player award under his belt as he continues to make strides. He averaged 26.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds as the No. 1 option in the 2024-25 season with his two co-stars sidelined. The Sixers have three stars--when healthy--they can rely on when the game gets tight down the stretch. Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Paul George are more than capable, but which one should they go to down the stretch of the game? Bleacher Report believes it should be Maxey when discussing who should take the final shot for each team: With apologies to former MVP Joel Embiid and nine-time All-Star Paul George, this is Tyrese Maxey's team in Philadelphia now. The Sixers' star guard averaged more fourth-quarter points than players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Donovan Mitchell, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and others and has showcased in the toughest environments that no moment is too big. With Embiid and George likely limited again this season, Maxey is the key for Philly returning to the playoffs. Maxey will certainly be somebody coach Nick Nurse and Co. will lean on when the 2025-26 season gets underway in October. They will need the star guard to be healthy and ready to go for a roster that is in need of isolation scoring from the perimeter.

Alex Bregman Predicted to Opt Out of Red Sox Deal
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal last winter. He was named an All-Star this year, but he has a player option for next year. Bregman was an All-Star in 2018 and 2019, but from 2020 to 2024, he slashed .261/.350/.445. While not bad, he was not playing like an All-Star. This year, he has slashed .299/.379/.542 in 76 games. He could find a more lucrative deal if he opts out of his current contract. If Bregman does hit the open market, many teams should be interested after his resurgent season. However, Bregman is reportedly open to an extension with the Red Sox, and it may be his preferred destination even if he hits the open market. HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 11: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox runs the bases after hitting a two run home run during the first inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on August 11, 2025 in Houston, Texas. MoreHe could not opt out and stay in Boston for $40 million next year, but CBS Sports' Mike Axisa predicted he would opt out and sign a new deal with the team. "Bregman opts out and eventually agrees to a new long-term contract with the Red Sox," wrote Axisa. "He's a (Scott) Boras client, so expect Bregman to see what's available in free agency, but I get the sense both sides are motivated to stay together. Boston's cheap (and excellent) young core makes it easy to fit a new contract for Bregman into ownership's not-as-ample-as-it-should-be budget." In the end, Bregman would stay in Boston with this prediction. However, he would get a new contract with likely more years. After trading Rafael Devers, Bregman's representation knows that the team has ample funds to pay him more. More MLB: Red Sox's Alex Cora Responds to Tarik Skubal's Cheating Accusation
