Peak Energy acquires 48 MW ready-to-build solar portfolio in Japan

Yahoo17-06-2025
The portfolio of projects will come online progressively over 2026-2028 and be combined with battery storage to maximize climate impact and cost savings for customers.
SINGAPORE and TOKYO, June 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Peak Energy, one of the fastest-growing renewable energy developers in Asia, has completed the acquisition of a unique portfolio of ready-to-build (RTB) high-voltage solar sites in Japan.
Located across different regions of Japan, including Tokyo and Tohoku, the projects have a combined capacity of 48 MW, sufficient to produce nearly 60 GWh of zero-carbon electricity per year, equivalent to the power consumption of around 15,000 households. In the process, the solar systems will help avoid nearly 27,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to removing around 9,000 cars from the road.
The solar plants are scheduled to come on stream over 2026-2027, with the electricity output sold to corporates through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs). Prices will be fixed from day one until the end of the 20+ year PPAs, allowing customers to make immediate savings on their electricity bills and to shield themselves from fluctuations in electricity tariffs over the long term. Selected sites will also see battery energy storage systems (BESS) collocated with the solar PV installations, allowing customers to make additional savings and expand their use of renewable power into the night.
This transaction further highlights Peak Energy's rapid growth in Japan, following the acquisition earlier in 2025 of another set of ready-to-build high-voltage solar sites, of 11 MW. Peak Energy since 2022 also co-owns a 28 MW solar plant in Kyushu and actively offers corporate power users in the country a range of energy services, such as cheap onsite solar PPAs, offsite solar PPAs and collocated solar+BESS PPAs.
"This acquisition further cements our position in Japan, where we are now uniquely positioned to serve large power consumers with cheap, clean energy at the scale the require and within the timeframe they need to meet their climate objectives," said Gavin Adda, CEO of Peak Energy. "I am particularly excited about Peak now also adding storage to some of our sites, to offer time-shifted PPAs, and helping some of our most ambitious consumers get closer to their 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy ambitions."

Foreign banks lean against broad dollar demand, pin rupee near 87/dollar

By Nimesh Vora MUMBAI (Reuters) - The Indian rupee was largely flat on Wednesday, holding near 87 per dollar, amid dollar sales by foreign banks, which offset broader demand for the U.S. currency from corporates and short-term speculators. The rupee was at 87.0575 to the U.S. dollar at 10:52 a.m. IST, after trading between 87.1650 and 87.0050 through the session. Traders said foreign banks were active on offers for USD/INR, preventing the pair from pushing higher despite weaker Asian peers and hedging by importers. "There's no shortage of dollar buyers. However, foreign banks have been hitting offers again, which is most likely driven by client flows," a currency trader said. "That's kept it (USD/INR) from moving up, like I had expected." Fading risks of an upside breakout in USD/INR, a rally in local equities and position squaring have helped the Indian currency recover after recent pressure. In recent weeks, the rupee's direction has been dictated largely by domestic factors. News around U.S. tariffs on India has been a key driver, and more recently by S&P's upgrade of India's credit rating outlook and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned tax cuts on goods and services. On tariff-related news, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday accused India of profiteering from its purchases of Russian oil during the war in Ukraine. His comments come at a time when U.S.-India relations are strained, with President Donald Trump imposing additional tariffs on New Delhi over Russian oil purchases. The tariffs are set to take effect next Wednesday. Meanwhile, other Asian currencies weakened on the day, while the dollar index inched higher. The key event this week is Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday.

Dollar strengthens ahead of Jackson Hole, kiwi drops on dovish RBNZ

By Kevin Buckland TOKYO (Reuters) -The U.S. dollar gained for a third straight session on Wednesday against the euro and sterling as traders awaited the Federal Reserve's annual Jackson Hole symposium this week for clues on the monetary policy path. The New Zealand dollar tumbled after the central bank reduced its cash rate by a quarter point to 3.0% as expected, but said its board had also considered a half-point cut. The kiwi slumped as much as 1.3% to $0.5820, its weakest since April 14, with policymakers lowering their projected floor for the cash rate to 2.55%, from 2.85% forecast in May. "The market did not expect the bank to send a strong dovish signal that it intends to deliver further cuts," Prashant Newnaha, a rates strategist at TD Securities, wrote in a client note. He has increased his forecast for additional easing, now projecting a cash rate of 2.5% by November. The U.S. dollar index, which measures the currency against six major counterparts, rose as high as 98.441 for the first time since August 12 on Wednesday, after gaining a combined 0.4% over the first two days of the week. The euro eased 0.1% to $1.1638, and sterling slipped 0.1% to $1.3480. The greenback advanced 0.1% to 0.8080 Swiss franc, though it edged down 0.1% to 147.46 yen. Friday's speech by Fed Chair Jerome Powell is the market's main focus, as traders watch for any pushback against market pricing of a rate reduction next month. Traders now place odds of 84% on such a cut and expect about 54 basis points of reductions by year-end. "Given the relatively high bar for Powell to meet, there's a bit of risk being baked into the markets that he leans to the hawkish side and the proverbial rug gets pulled from beneath investors," said Kyle Rodda, an analyst at Traders, who ramped up bets for a Fed cut on September 17 after a surprisingly weak payrolls report at the start of this month, were further encouraged after consumer price data showed limited upward pressure from tariffs. However, a hotter-than-expected producer price reading last week complicated the policy picture. Powell has said he is reluctant to cut rates because of expected tariff-driven price pressures this summer. Later on Wednesday, the Fed will issue the minutes of its meeting on July 29 and 30, when it held rates steady, although they may offer limited insight as the meeting came before the weak jobs numbers. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin hovered at around $113,612 after earlier dipping to the lowest since August 3 at $112,578.38, pressured by a strengthening dollar. Ether was little changed at around $4,170.
