2027 Mercedes EQS Spied With Updates As Sales Falter
The X296 EQS SUV has only been on the market since 2022, and as is the case with the sedan that shares its name, customer interest in the all-electric SUV has been low. These subtle styling updates will aim to bring the EQS more in line with the styling of conventional Mercs to help reverse that disinterest, and there'll be more changes beneath the skin.
The current EQS SUV offers an EPA-estimated maximum range of up to 323 miles, but the future models are expected to exceed that with the same sort of battery as the recently launched CLA, which set a world record for EVs by covering 2,309 miles in 24 hours last year. The compact sedan has an 85-kWh battery with anodes made of silicon oxide mixed with graphite, something Mercedes says increases energy density by as much as 20 percent compared to previous batteries, so the new EQS should exceed 350 miles of range in most forms.
The EQS is also expected to feature eATS 2.0 motors, delivering more power and efficiency from the modified EVA2M architecture, which supports 800-volt technology. Our spies say the new EQS will be presented at IAA Mobility 2025, taking place from 9-14 September, so we'll know more soon. Still, despite these improvements, the EQS may not be successful.
Some reports indicate the EQS name will disappear altogether, and even Mercedes admits that it made mistakes in the EV space. Recently, CarBuzz reported that Mercedes is closing its U.S. order books for the EQE and EQS sedans and SUVs, halting production from September 1. No timeline for a return was announced, but with huge price cuts of over $10,000 on some models, it seems that Mercedes has more inventory than it knows what to do with. With EV incentives going away at the end of September, shifting the EQS will be even tougher for dealers, and we doubt the facelifted model will fare much better. Then again, a lot can change between now and next year, when the 2027 EQS is expected to reach the market.

Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport Teased as Winged GT3 RS Competitor
The Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport is a new version of the German coupe the brand just teased for the first time. According to Mercedes, it will be powered by a V-8 and is being developed to set new record drives, presumably with the Nürburgring at the top of that list. Officially, the GT Track Sport is labeled a concept, but production is likely, as the brand says it offers a "glimpse into the future of the AMG GT family." To give you an idea of where the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe falls on the sliding scale between surgical and brutish in its demeanor, take a look at our most recent review, where we compared the 2025 GT63 S E Performance to a hippopotamus. Thankfully, despite the GT Coupe's brash nature, Mercedes-AMG hasn't given up on it and instead developed a new track-focused model aptly named the Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport. Mercedes-AMG According to Mercedes, the new GT Track Sport is being developed "to set record new times," which we can only assume means the automaker is planning a Nürburgring attempt in the near future. No performance details are given, but with Mercedes seemingly targeting competitors like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, upgrades are sure to be plentiful. Given the on-track performance focus of the new concept, it's likely the GT Coupe ditches the 2+2 layout in favor of a strictly two-seat design. And while the entire car is shrouded behind a camouflaged curtain, the large front splitter and aggressive swan-neck rear wing stick out as performance upgrades. Mercedes-AMG There's no word on output yet, but we do know the GT Track Sport sticks to a V-8 mill under the hood. Between the GT55 and the GT63 trims, the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 setup in the current AMG GT lineup produces between 469 and 603 horsepower. Add in the hybrid batteries of the GT63 S E Performance, and the combined output surges to 805. Mercedes-AMG Mercedes-AMG Mercedes hasn't confirmed that the GT Track Sport is actually headed for production. The model is officially labeled as a concept, but given that Mercedes says the teaser offers a "glimpse into the future of the AMG GT family," we fully expect it to enter production. Here's hoping that, despite the car's name, the Mercedes-AMG team kept its cool long enough to fill out the requisite paperwork to make the GT Track Sport road legal. Jack Fitzgerald Associate News Editor Jack Fitzgerald's love for cars stems from his as yet unshakable addiction to Formula 1. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn't afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf. Read full bio

Alpina's Logo Just Got Slightly Less Cool
BMW inked a deal to take over Alpina in 2022. The German automaker is beginning to exert that control, recently trademarking a new, flatter, and less exciting logo for the tuning brand. The latest Alpina logo features its first overhaul in over two decades. The most noticeable change is the missing red-and-white shield. The throttle and crankshaft symbols remain, but the filing shows the two components in a simple circle, mimicking BMW's iconic roundel. It's a simplified design, mimicking a trend , in just black and white with a tweaked and taller font. Photo by: Alpina The trademark filing, first discovered by CarBuzz , lists its uses for automobiles, commercial information, and parts and accessories services, so we're likely to see the new branding on more than just future Alpina models. However, it's unclear what those cars will be. When the two brands announced the deal , BMW said Alpina would build modified cars through the end of 2025, begin offering restoration services, and expand its services business. According to the automaker, it's difficult to operate a small firm independently with increasing emissions regulations and safety standards, so acquiring it would allow the Alpina brand to remain on the market. Alpine began operation in 1965, tuning and racing BMW models before building complete vehicles. While vehicle production will cease at its Buchloe facility at the end of the year, Alpina's service, parts, and accessories business will continue at the location, and we hope to see the new badge on a real vehicle soon. European Auto Stocks Turbulent Ahead Of U.S. Tariff Deadline August 1
US of America and European Union relations. Auto investments have been volatile this week as a European tariff deal with the U.S. seemed imminent. The nervousness shows hopes for an early deal might be wishful thinking. An announcement is expected August 1. The STOXX Europe 600 Automobiles & Parts Index, which tracks European automakers and suppliers, jumped 3.4% in mid-week on news Japan had agreed a 15% tariff on its auto exports to the U.S. That rally was led by Mercedes, Volkswagen and BMW. Japan's deal was 10 percentage points lower than President Trump's recent threat and immediately set off speculation that it might be possible for Europe too. After all, Trump has attacked the European Union for its excessive and dishonest barriers to trade, but Japan has proved itself as adept as the EU in weaponizing so-called non-tariff barriers. The index held on to its gains by the close Friday after much volatility and ended the week at just over 545.20, up nearly 4 points. According to Bloomberg, citing diplomats briefed on the negotiations, the EU and the U.S. are working towards an agreement that would set a 15% tariff for imports including autos. But they also cautioned that the ultimate decision was President Donald Trump's and this was difficult to predict. Plea for caution Caution would make sense, as former U.S. ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland has pointed out. He reminds investors that Trump has wanted to mitigate what he considers long-term unfairness by the EU which extends past tariffs to corrupt non-tariff barriers too. Sondland said in an interview with BBC NewsNight program earlier this year, the EU imposes hidden barriers on American products. For cars, that can mean different safety standards. For food, there also are standards the EU doesn't like. Hormone-fed beef is one area of contention. 'If we sell you a vegetable or a car or a product if it's safe to use in the U.S. it should deemed to be safe to use in the EU,' Sondland said. He was asked to sum up Trump's tariff plan for Europe and the world. 'The U.S. is tired of talking about impediments to its foreign trade and wants action now,' he said. 'The message is very clear. We've had a list of demands and requests from all of these friends for years and sometimes decades and the results are similar every time. They take it under advisement. They'll think about it then get back to us and Donald Trump has had enough of that.' Sondland was ambassador to the EU during Trump's first term and made clear he wasn't speaking for the administration. Volkswagen hopes for deal Volkswagen, Europe's biggest auto manufacturer, reported Friday that it had taken a $1.5 billion hit to earnings in the first half of 2025 because of the tariff issue, and CEO Oliver Blume expressed hopes that a favorable tariff deal was possible. Oliver Blume, CEO of German car giant Volkswagen (VW), addresses journalists. (Photo by JOHN ... More MACDOUGALL/AFP via Getty Images) 'We hope that it will come to a well-balanced deal between the U.S. and the EU, which allows fair trade between the regions,' Blume told an investor briefing after the earnings announcement. Blume expected a 15% tariff deal, similar to the Japanese arrangement. He also said Volkswagen and European automakers were looking at possible investment and production arrangements that might bring down tariffs more. Audi might start output in the U.S. too, Blume said. Investments in U.S. production would earn extra points to bring down the tariff rates. Exports from the U.S. of German production there would also earn points. BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina factory is the biggest German auto exporter from the U.S., shipping nearly 225,000 vehicles with a value exceeding $10 billion in 2024. Mercedes' factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is another significant exporter. Volkswagen also has a presence in the U.S., including a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but their exports are much smaller than BMW's and Mercedes'. Will Europe match Japan's investment commitment? Chicago-based investment researcher MorningStar said a critical point of Japan's deal was its commitment to invest half a trillion dollars in the U.S. 'Will Europe do the same? While the European automakers have significant investment plans in the U.S. in their pipeline, the figures do not come close to Japan's commitment,' said analyst Rella Suskin. 'Companies such as BMW and Mercedes have spoken with extreme confidence in reaching a deal that allows for the netting of imports and exports. For every car that they export from the U.S., they can import one car either duty-free or at a reduced duty. The Japanese-U.S. trade deal indicates that there is negotiating room to be had around import duties on cars coming into the U.S.,' Suskin said.
