New Range Rover SV Black debuts with all-black styling and sensory seats

Another week, another blacked-out special edition from Jaguar Land Rover.
Following the recent launches of the Range Rover Sport SV Black and Land Rover Defender Octa Black, the new Range Rover SV Black is the latest model to receive this deep-shadow treatment.
Billed as the 'darkest, stealthiest Range Rover ever created', the SV Black is finished in Narvik Gloss Black paint, with the radiator grille and bonnet lettering also treated in Gloss Black.
Additional highlights include 23-inch Gloss Black alloy wheels, black brake calipers, and a bespoke black ceramic SV tailgate roundel.
Inside, the theme continues with satin black trim, ebony leather upholstery featuring single-panel seat covers with significantly less stitches (a first for Range Rover), black birch veneers and a gear shifter crafted from satin black ceramic. Moonlight Chrome accents are used throughout the cabin to add a dark, jewel-like contrast.
Standard equipment includes the brand's Body and Soul Seats, which allow occupants to physically feel the music from the Meridian sound system, and a new Sensory Floor that uses haptic feedback to deliver a similar immersive effect.
Power comes from a 4.4 l twin-turbocharged mild-hybrid V8 petrol engine producing 452kW and 750Nm.
The Range Rover SV Black will be available to order from late 2025, with pricing starting at R5,269,200 for the standard wheelbase and R5,718,700 for the long-wheelbase version.

A Durban businessman finds himself entangled in a financial quagmire following the purchase of a used Range Rover Vogue SDV8 Fifty Anniversary Edition. The man who wants to remain anonymous for his safety, claims the vehicle, bought in August 2022 from Land Rover Menlyn in Pretoria, exhibited latent defects that manifested after he took delivery of the vehicle which he described as a dream car meant for his family. Upon driving the Range Rover for the first time, he noticed a low coolant level warning light. Concerned, he contacted the salesperson at Land Rover, who advised him to take the vehicle to Land Rover Umhlanga for repairs. This initial visit marked the beginning of a frustrating series of attempts to resolve the vehicle's problems. 'I received the car on Saturday, and I took it in on Monday to uMhlanga Land Rover, but the car was not repaired adequately, and the issue persisted,' he explained. Multiple visits to the dealership yielded little progress, and during the last repair attempt, Land Rover technicians reportedly blew the engine. Left with a non-functional vehicle and dwindling patience, he decided to cancel the deal, fearing he would never have a reliable car again. However, the situation escalated dramatically when both Land Rover and Standard Bank, which financed the purchase, declined to assist him. 'I was told by Standard Bank that they couldn't cancel the deal even after I reported the critical issues," he said, expressing disbelief at their inaction. "I drove the car for less than five months and even during those months, it was always booked in for repairs. I never enjoyed the car from the day it was delivered." Despite the bank's knowledge of the vehicle's mechanical problems, he said they insisted upon R55,000 monthly payments, leaving him increasingly frustrated and in financial turmoil. To make matter worse, he claims after numerous times of being ignored, Land Rover eventually sent him an email from the UK stating that they do not have an engine, and they don't know if they will ever have an engine for the model he bought. "The car was a limited edition; it was for the 50-anniversary edition and some of the parts were not available. Now I'm left with no car, but Standard Bank insists that I meet my monthly R55,000 payments despite them knowing that the car was ruined by the dealership," he said.

New Range Rover Electric gives a taste of things to come
ThermAsist is an intelligent system that transfers heat around the vehicle on demand, allowing it to also cool the cabin and precondition the battery to its optimum charging temperature. The batteries, with up to 118kWh capacity, are stored in the vehicle's floor, which reduces the centre of gravity for improved handling. The electric Range Rover five-seater has a similar weight to the ICE and PHEV versions and the same cabin and boot space. Pre-launch testing is taking place before the vehicle goes on sale next year and I had a brief drive in a prototype on an obstacle course set up by Range Rover at the Goodwood racing circuit in the UK last week. Riding on height-adjustable air suspension, the big SUV silently and effortlessly crawled through axle twisters and over steep gradients, displaying the brand's renowned trail-tackling skills honed over five generations. The electric powertrain does away with the need for a low-range transfer case or a physical driveline, saving weight and complexity. There are two electric motors powering the vehicle — one at each axle — with the computer-controlled drivetrain able to direct power individually to each wheel to maintain maximum traction in all driving conditions. To further enhance its adventure capability, it has adaptive off-road cruise control, hill-descent control and a unique throttle response for each Terrain Response drive mode. Like other Range Rovers, it has four-wheel steering to help the big car manoeuvre more easily through tight spaces. A single pedal driving mode provides strong regenerative braking when off throttle, allowing the vehicle to be driven with minimum use of the brake pedal. In the slow-paced obstacle course the electric Range Rover felt serene, but the company says it will feel just as calm in high-speed driving as it's the quietest Range Rover to date, with active road noise cancellation. The South African launch date and pricing of the Range Rover Electric have not been confirmed.
