Downed cell tower has left many Thorhild County residents without service for weeks

Yahoo7 days ago
Many residents in Thorhild County, Alta., have been without cellphone service for three weeks, after thieves downed a 106-metre Telus tower.
Businesses are scrambling, while families worry about their inability to reach each other or access help during an emergency.
Monique Janice Chartrand, who owns a roofing company, sends her children to stay with their father in the hamlet of Thorhild when she is working out of town.
"Just in case something ever happened — like if one of the kids fell down the stairs, or something like that, and you need to call 911," Chartrand told CBC News Friday.
She recalled how much she relied on her mobile phone during the wildfire evacuation of Fort McMurray, Alta., where she used to live. Residents in parts of Thorhild County, about 85 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, were forced to flee wildfire in May.
"Just imagine trying to get a hold of your loved ones and you're in a panic trying to get all your stuff out of your house," Chartrand said.
Just after 9 a.m. MT on June 14, RCMP say officers responded to a call about the downed cell tower on Range Road 233. All of its copper wiring was stolen.
Investigators believe the vandalism occurred around 5 a.m. that day, when the roughly 150 farmers served by the tower lost service, police say.
Telus customers between Clyde, Alta., and Thorhild County have had wireless services disrupted, a company spokesperson told CBC News via email. They did not specify how many customers have been impacted.
"As a temporary solution, our teams have adjusted nearby antennas to provide as much coverage as possible to the community, though there may be some customers who experience intermittent or no service," the spokesperson said.
"We are working quickly to build a new tower, which we anticipate will be completed in September."
Telus encourages anyone with information about the incident to contact police, they said.
The incident is the second such act of vandalism to affect a Telus tower north of Edmonton in less than three months, the company spokesperson said.
RCMP confirmed to CBC News that, in late March, vandals destroyed another tower near Bruderheim, Alta., a town roughly 45 kilometres northeast of Edmonton and 50 kilometres south of Thorhild County. Although, police said nothing was stolen.
Police said a cut guy wire — a tensioned cable used to stabilize freestanding structures — caused the tower, located off of Highway 15, to collapse.
"We are deeply concerned about the increasing frequency of these acts of vandalism," the Telus spokesperson said.
That tower's rebuild is expected to be finished at the end of the month, they said.

Toronto cops probing murder after body dumped along 401 in Pickering

Homicide detectives are investigating a gruesome murder after human remains were found dumped along the side of Hwy. 401 in Pickering early Friday. Toronto Police have confirmed their officers are investigating the murder after a body was found along the south side of the busy highway's eastbound lanes just west of Whites Rd. – in Durham Region, just outside of their jurisdiction – shortly after midnight. No further details have been officially released so far. However, Toronto Sun sources say the remains were discovered in a suitcase and are believed to be that of a missing Scarborough woman. Toronto cops spent Friday morning searching an area along the side of Hwy. 401, using MTO trucks to help block the highway while Forensic Unit and Marine Unit officers could scour a watery marshy gully using metal detectors and long poles. The officers recovered evidence and cleared from the area around the noon-hour. A Homicide detective showed up before noon and walked into the crime scene, which was littered with various police markers near a culvert system just off the highway. Aidan Kendic and his co-workers, who work at a nearby musical instrument and sound warehouse, wandered over to learn about the grisly find while they were on their coffee break. 'I don't know what to make of it. I just heard about it five or 10 minutes ago,' Kendic said. 'It's pretty crazy.' 'It does freak me out. I don't know why they would pick here right next to my work. I don't know what to make of it,' he added. Some of his co-workers had the same thoughts as they peered through the fences separating the overgrown marsh area, their employer's building and Hwy. 401, snapping cellphone images of the officers searching. Further down Hwy. 401 in Durham Region, sources said a dumpster was removed on a flatbed from the Pickering Casino Resort Hotel, likely taken to the Centre for Forensic Sciences. Around noontime, the CTV helicopter captured video footage of multiple Toronto Police vehicles, a Forensic Unit truck and a large group of officers searching for further evidence at a waste management transfer station in Pickering on Friday. It's believed that the various crime scenes are connected somehow yet police have yet to reveal any of their findings. While not officially confirmed by police, Sun sources say the murder is thought to be tied to an unknown trouble call that 43 Division responded to recently after neighbours reported hearing people fighting at a residence in Scarborough. Investigators 'working tirelessly' to catch 15-year-old boy's killer Toronto teen charged with murder in death of 14-year-old boy Cops identify Scarborough homicide victim According to sources, the officers were unable to locate a woman who may have been involved in the incident. Investigators later reviewed video from a security camera on the premises and spotted her entering the property but not exiting. Sources said a man was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault related to the missing woman after officers found evidence of evidence of a suspected crime scene in a home. – With files by Jack Boland and Chris Doucette

More than 70 arrested at UK protests in support of banned group Palestine Action

LONDON (AP) — More than 70 people were arrested Saturday at protests in the U.K. against the Palestine Action group being proscribed a terrorist organization by the British government following a break-in and vandalism at a Royal Air Force base. In London, the Metropolitan Police said 42 people had been arrested by late afternoon. All but one of the arrests were for showing support for a proscribed organization, which police have said includes chanting, wearing clothing or displaying articles such as flags, signs or logos. Another person was arrested for common assault. A further 16 arrests were made in Manchester, according to Greater Manchester Police, while South Wales Police said 13 people were also held in Cardiff. In London, it was the second straight week protesters gathered to support the pro-Palestinian activist group. Its outlawing has meant support for the organization is deemed a criminal offense. Police arrested 29 people at a similar protest last weekend. Two groups gathered underneath both the statues of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi and South Africa's first post-apartheid president, Nelson Mandela, in Parliament Square. Signs with the wording 'I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action,' were held aloft in silence as the protesters were surrounded by police officers and members of the media. Some demonstrators could be seen lying on top of each other on the ground as police searched their bags and took away signs. Officers could then be seen carrying away a number of protesters who were lying down, lifting them off the ground and into waiting police vans parked around the square. The official designation earlier this month of Palestine Action as a proscribed group under the Terrorism Act 2000 means that membership in the group and support for its actions are punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Some 81 organizations are already proscribed under the U.K. act, including the militant groups Hamas and al-Qaida. The government moved to ban Palestine Action after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base in Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, England, on June 20, damaging two planes using red paint and crowbars in protest at the British government's ongoing military support for Israel in its war in Gaza. Police said that the incident caused around 7 million pounds ($9.4 million) of damage. Four people between 22 and 35 years old were charged with conspiracy to commit criminal damage and conspiracy to enter a prohibited place for purposes prejudicial to the interests of the U.K. The four are scheduled to appear on July 18 at the Central Criminal Court in London, better known as the Old Bailey.
