Punchestown Festival offers 70 Wicklow students hospitality work experience

Combining community involvement, real-world skills training and local pride, the 'Elevate 2025 – Discovering the Heart of Irish Hospitality Excellence' programme will give St Kevin's transition year students invaluable experience, working with the army of chefs, kitchen, bar and floor staff that will serve up to 17,000 corporate hospitality guests.
The innovative pilot scheme is designed to immerse local TY students in the dynamic world of hospitality, equipping them with practical skills, confidence, and insight into premium food and beverage service – all set against the vibrant backdrop of the iconic Punchestown Festival, which takes place from April 29 to May 3.
The journey began in the classrooms of St. Kevin's and culminated in a live-service experience at Punchestown, where students worked side-by-side with seasoned hospitality professionals.
Over five weeks, 119 students took part in a hands-on training programme delivered by Sam Brancato, Aramark's standards and training business partner.
Praising the programme and St Kevin's students for their engagement, school principal Brian Doran said: 'There are exciting opportunities ahead for our TY students.
'As the students of St. Kevin's step confidently into their roles at Punchestown 2025, they carry with them not only new skills but also the pride of representing their community on an important stage.'
Beyond training and employment, Elevate 2025 fosters local pride by connecting young people and their families to one of Ireland's most celebrated sporting and social events. It showcases the hospitality industry not just as a vibrant career path, but as a source of essential life skills – from teamwork and communication to professionalism and adaptability.
The initiative has already garnered international interest, with Aramark leadership in the US watching closely as a potential model for rollout in American schools – a testament to the programme's quality and impact.
'We are incredibly proud to partner with Aramark and St. Kevin's on this meaningful project,' said Punchestown hospitality manager and Elevate founder Sue Wilson.
'What started out as a chat with a friend who teaches at the school has evolved into what could be a global template. Elevate 2025 is more than a programme – it's creating strong links in the local community, providing skills and experience that will stand to these young people wherever life may take them, it offers paid employment on a local level.'

Four Volkswagen executives sentenced in latest Dieselgate ruling – Can you still claim compensation?

*If you click on a link in this article we will earn affiliate revenue NEW CLAIM Four Volkswagen executives sentenced in latest Dieselgate ruling – Can you still claim compensation? A four year trial concluded when a German court sentenced four former Volkswagen directors for their part in the diesel cheating emission scandal uncovered in 2015. Two defendants received prison sentences, with the former head of diesel motor development receiving the heaviest term of four years and six months. 1 Many other car brands in the UK are also offering compensation Credit: Alamy While the trial might have been brought to a close, prosecutors are still uncovering how widely the scandal was known around the company. According to the Financial Times, criminal proceedings against a total of 31 defendants are still pending. Volkswagen is also facing a separate civil case, where it may have to pay damages for the effects dieslgate had on the markets. Currently, the emission cheating scandal has cost Volkswagen billions, with some of this money owed to UK drivers as compensation. Check Diesel emissions claims eligibility What was Dieselgate? In September 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), an American environmental regulatory body, found a 'defeat device' in many US Volkswagens. This was a piece of software which would make the vehicle look less polluting than it was during emissions testing. Volkswagen later admitted that this software could be found in millions of vehicles worldwide - including models across the UK and Europe. In the UK, over 1.2 million diesels were recalled once the EPA found these devices. This included thousands of Volkswagens, Audis, and Skodas. However, Diesel Claim, a law firm, believes many other vehicle manufacturers are guilty of fitting these devices too. That includes Ford, BMW, Land Rover, Jaguar, Mercedes, Renault, and Nissan. Can I still claim compensation? Diesel Claim said UK drivers are due compensation for this scandal, and it is fighting the case for claimants in court. It believes it has affected the resale value of affected vehicles, led to higher fuel costs for consumers, and increased your carbon footprint - meaning drivers should receive a pay out. To be eligible to claim compensation through Diesel Claim, you need to have bought a diesel vehicle between 2009 and 2019. The vehicle must also have been manufactured between these dates. If you're unsure, you can type your vehicle's registration number into its claims checker. Claimants could receive up to £10,000 in compensation. Diesel Claim works on a no win no fee basis, meaning you won't need to pay any fees for joining. It's only if you're successfully awarded compensation that Diesel Claim will take a cut of your compensation.

Sporting merit rendered meaningless – Palace hit out at Europa League demotion

Crystal Palace have claimed 'sporting merit is rendered meaningless' following UEFA's decision to demote them from the Europa League and the Court of Arbitration for Sport's rejection of their appeal. The FA Cup winners were demoted to the Conference League by European football's governing body UEFA on July 11 after it determined that, as of March 1, American businessman John Textor had control or influence at both Palace and French club Lyon. Palace appealed, but on Monday the CAS announced the London club had lost their appeal, with Nottingham Forest expected to take the place in UEFA's second-tier competition. At a time when we should be celebrating our victory in the Community Shield at Wembley, the decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless. Full statement 👇#CPFC — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) August 12, 2025 A statement from the Eagles read: 'At a time when we should be celebrating our victory in the Community Shield at Wembley, the decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless. 'When we won the FA Cup against Manchester City on that momentous day in May, our manager and players earned the right to play Europa League football. 'We have been denied that opportunity. 'It appears that certain clubs, organisations and individuals have a unique privilege and power. 'This growing and unhealthy influence has shattered the hopes and dreams of Crystal Palace supporters, and does not bode well for aspirational teams all over Europe competing to progress when rules and sanctions are unevenly applied in the most flagrant way.' Marc Guehi lifts the Community Shield with team-mates following Palace's win over Liverpool on Sunday (John Walton/PA) UEFA and the CAS have been contacted for comment by the PA news agency. UEFA regulations state that where one or more clubs are found to have shared ownership, they cannot play in the same competition, and Lyon held on to the Europa League spot by virtue of their higher league position. Textor has since sold his shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, a purchase completed in late July. The Eagles' stance, as outlined in a July statement, was that 'it's clear for everyone to see that we are not part of a multi-club operation and never have been'. On Tuesday, Palace wrote in their statement: 'Multi-club structures hide behind the charade of a 'blind trust' while clubs such as ours, who have no connection to another club whatsoever, are prevented from playing in the same competition. Palace celebrated FA Cup glory in May (Nick Potts/PA) 'To compound the injustice, clubs that appear to have huge informal arrangements with each other are also allowed to participate and even possibly play against each other. 'While we respect the CAS tribunal members, the process is designed to severely restrict and, in our case, make it almost impossible to receive a fair hearing. 'The denial of all disclosure requests to obtain correspondence between the relevant parties, the refusal to allow witness testimony from those involved, and the general lack of formality and respect for law mean decisions cannot be properly challenged, leading to pre-determined outcomes.' Palace have called for UEFA to consider both its regulations and the application of those rules. The club statement concluded: 'UEFA's decision has wider implications for the governance of the sport. A combination of poorly conceived regulations and their unequal application means our brilliant fans will be deprived of the chance to watch this team compete in the Europa League for the first time in our history. 'This should be a turning point for football. 'UEFA must fulfil its mandate to pass coherent rules which are properly communicated and applied, with reasonable cure periods to resolve uncertainty and consistent sanctions, treating all clubs equally with a proper appeal process. 'The European Court of Justice has made it clear that rulings similar to this will be under greater scrutiny from national courts in future. Only then will fairness and due process be granted to every team. 'Although we continue to take legal advice on the next steps, we will compete in the Conference League with the same determination and will to win that characterises this incredible club.' A full CAS explanation, with grounds, will be published in due course unless parties request confidentiality. The CAS statement on Monday explained: 'After considering the evidence, the panel found that John Textor, founder of Eagle Football Holdings, had shares in CPFC and OL and was a board member with decisive influence over both clubs at the time of UEFA's assessment date. 'The panel also dismissed the argument by CPFC that they received unfair treatment in comparison to Nottingham Forest and OL. The panel considered that the UEFA regulations are clear and do not provide flexibility to clubs that are non-compliant on the assessment date, as CPFC claimed.'

Taco Bell announce first Irish restaurant in brilliant fashion

Taco Bell have announced that they're coming to Ireland — and have announced doing so in perfect fashion. The American fast food chain have announced that they'll be bringing their cuisine to our shores as part of the new Applegreen service station on the M3 motorway. The new service station will be situated on Exit 6 of the M3 motorway in Dunshaughlin, Co Meath, and will create over 100 new jobs in the facility. The station will include an M&S Food shop-in outlet, a Burger King, a Crafted — their new deli — and a convenience store, as well as a forecourt and an initial eight ultra-fast EV charging ports. More of the charging ports will come when the area gets more power. @tacobell_uki @Garron Noone ♬ There She Goes – CYRIL & MOONLGHT & The La's Announcing the new restaurant, the chain stitched a brilliant video from Mayo's Garron Noone, who previously said that he wanted a quesadilla from the chain; although he gave his own pronunciation for the Mexican staple. 'I'm just a simple Irish man, I've never had a kweezadilla before,' Garron said in the video; before Taco Bell stitched the video to announce the new location — with a comment inviting Garron to try a kweezadilla. While people were delighted that the chain was coming to Ireland, the location proved baffling to some, with one commenting 'Dunshaughlin of all places.' Taco Bell have announced that they're coming to Ireland — and have announced doing so in perfect fashion, bringing in Garron Noone. Pic: Supplied 'Not Cork, not Dublin but Meath,' another commented, while another added 'Dunshaughlin is the most random place.' Another was delighted, however, commenting 'I've never been so happy to live 20 mins away from Dunshaughlin.' Applegreen are investing around €15million for the new service station, with them set to invest over €1billion to expand its business in Ireland, the UK and US over the next five years. Those who were disheartened to hear that the first Taco Bell will be in Meath needn't fret, however, as Applegreen plan to expand Taco Bell to its Irish locations over the next five years (no Baja Blast is on the menu though, unfortunately.) The iconic chain of Mexican fast food is coming to Applegreen, as it opens the doors to its latest service station next month. Pic: Supplied 'The new Dunshaughlin service area will also see the launch our new Crafted Kitchen & Deli – offering good, honest Irish food, crafted just for you,' Seamus Stapleton, Managing Director for Applegreen's Republic of Ireland, said. 'Crafted will bring a range of new products and will also continue to offer customers deli favourites, such as chicken fillet rolls and breakfast rolls.' Matthew Johnson, New Market Lead for Taco Bell Europe, welcomed the move, saying that the merger will bring the chain's iconic menu and unique dining experience to the country and will allow Taco Bell to continue to grow as a global brand. 'The partnership will Applegreen will enhance Taco Bell's presence in Europe, solidifying our regional footprint but also propelling our global growth ambitions,' he added. Taco Bell in Ireland will open its doors in Applegreen Dunshaughlin in September.
