Rehabilitation plan for coalfield fire victims, Pune Metro get nod
Addressing a press conference, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Pune currently has 33.3km of operational metro lines, with another 33km under construction. The ₹ 3,626 crore project for Pune Metro Line Phase 2 will extend the metro route by 12.75km, adding 13 new stations to boost the east-west connectivity across the city.
Two elevated corridors, Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi, as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi line are aimed at linking key suburbs, IT hubs, and transport nodes across the city.
'Systematic efforts have been made to modernise urban transport in Pune,' Vaishnaw said, adding that metro connectivity, which was limited to just five cities before 2014, has now expanded to 24 cities, with daily ridership rising from 2.8 million to 11 million.
The Centre also approved the ₹ 5,940 crore revised master plan to deal with the rehabilitation of the affected families in Jharia coalfield fire in Jharkhand.
'The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the revised Jharia Master Plan (JMP) for addressing issues related to fire, land subsidence and the rehabilitation of affected families in the Jharia coalfield,' a statement issued by the government said.
The government also cleared a proposal to set up the South Asia regional research centre of the International Potato Centre (CIP) in Agra entailing financial support of ₹ 111.5 crore.
The objective of this investment is to increase food and nutrition security, farmers' income, and job creation by improving potato and sweet potato productivity, post-harvest management and value-addition, a government statement said.
Vaishnaw said that research at the regional centre will focus on seed production, pest management, sustainable production, and training of farmers.The Uttar Pradesh government has already allocated 10 acres for the research centre. Headquartered in Lima, Peru, the International Potato Center (CIP) focuses on research and development of potato, sweet potato and Andean roots and tubers.

Union Minister takes part in ‘Har Ghar Tiranga' rallies
Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, and Parliamentary Affairs, L. Murugan, on Thursday, took part in two 'Har Ghar Tiranga' rallies held in Avadi and Royapuram. Union Minister assures Karnataka of making arrangements for supply of fertilizers to tide over shortage
Union Minister for Agriculture Shivaraj Singh Chauhan has assured Karnataka, facing urea shortage, of making arrangements to supply the remaining quantum of fertilizers from the allocated share to help tide over the shortage, according to Karnataka Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy. In an official note, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said the Union Minister had made the assurance at a video conference of State Agriculture Ministers. Responding to an appeal by him to make up for the short supply from the Centre, the Union Minister had said that he would talk to the Secretary to the Union Fertilizers' Ministry and make arrangements, he noted. At the videoconference, Karnataka again blamed the Centre's short supply for the urea shortage in the State, and appealed to it to immediately provide the remaining stock of 2.67 lakh tonnes. Giving the break-up of the urea shortage, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy told Mr. Chauhan that the shortage in the State stood at 1.27 lakh tonnes in July and 1.4 lakh tonnes in August. Pointing out that the south-west monsoon is the mainstay for the State's agricultural sector and sowing would gain steam by August-September that marks the closing phase of this season, the Minister expressed concern that the sowing and standing crops may get hit if farmers did not get adequate fertilizers on time. He also noted that urea was in great demand as it was being used as a 'top-dose fertilizer' for most of the crops. Emphasising the point that shortage of urea and DAP had become a national problem, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said Ministers from several States had raised issues related to urea shortage at the videoconference. He also brought to the notice of Mr. Chauhan that the State government had begun the operations of University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences in Mandya from this academic year and appealed to him to expedite the process of bringing the new university under ICAR's recognition so that the Central funds for development of the university could be availed.

21 MP cops get police medals
Bhopal: Four MP police personnel were selected for the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service and 17 for the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. The announcement was made by the Union govt on the eve of Independence Day. The medals will be conferred on Aug 15.
