Is starting a business more rewarding than studying at Harvard? Why one student is considering betting big on India's growth story
Harvard MBA candidate
is thinking of quitting the programme to move to India. Her friend posted on X, calling her 'very sharp, generalist' and saying she wants to 'bet on the India story.' This isn't a whim — she is exploring operator roles in Seed, Series A or Series B startups and inviting founders and VCs to reach out.
The post struck a chord. AI and infra B2B leaders rushed to the comments.
One wrote, "Great decision. If she is interested in working on the frontlines of the AI/infra B2B market in one of the fastest growing markets at one of the best positioned startups to win this space. It would be great to be introduced." They see real potential.

Voices urging caution
Not everyone agreed with stepping away from Harvard now.
"If she's a close friend, tell her not to drop out. Period. The India story is multidecadal; there will still be many many years to bet on it after a year or two."

Another said, "Dropping out is a bad idea! Can do better after 2 years too."
Startup ecosystem beyond the buzz
So what is she joining? India's startup ecosystem is substantial and growing.
As of mid-2025, India hosts around 120 unicorns privately held companies valued over $1 billion, placing it among the top global ecosystems, as per previous news reports.
From 2014 to mid-2024, startups in India attracted more than $150 billion in funding. Top hub, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR and Mumbai, garnered nearly 90 per cent of that.
India recognised over 159,000 startups by mid-2025. Since 2016, those startups generated 1.7 million direct jobs and nearly half are in tech, as reported by a
Business Insider
report.
In Hyderabad, STPI's network has backed over 1,400 startups through funding and facilities, with 44 per cent led by women. And these startups raised more than ₹574 crore, as per
The Times of India
.
Venture funds are pouring in. Artha India Ventures closed a ₹432 crore fund to back Series B and C firms, as per an earlier report by
The Economic Times
.
Bat VC launched a $100 million fund to support early-stage AI, fintech and enterprise startups across India and the US, according to the
Business Insider
.
She'd be jumping into a rich and expanding ecosystem. India is not just producing unicorns, it is building structures. Thousands of jobs. A surge of funding. More diverse regions now getting attention, not just big cities.
The advice she's getting captures it all. One view says don't rush. India's growth isn't one moment in time, there will be chances afterward. The other side sees less waiting, more doing. And both have something real.

NMC Plans To Open Bus Depots For Pvt Operators, Mulls Hourly Parking Charges
1 2 Nagpur: In a move set to reshape city travel, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to allow private buses to operate from its depots located outside the city limits. The decision came after the traffic police barred the halt of such buses on the Inner Ring Road between 8am and 10pm to reduce congestion. Municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, additional commissioner Vasumana Pant, and deputy commissioners Milind Meshram and Rajesh Bhagat, along with the transport department team, inspected depots at Khapri and Hingna on Wednesday. During the visit, officials dropped Hingna from consideration after finding that bus entry and turning inside the depot was problematic. Instead, attention shifted to Khapri and an alternative site near the New Airport Metro station, where vacant land is available. Officials noted that Khapri depot is adjacent to a police chowky on busy Wardha Road and has around three acres of land making it the largest and most viable option for private operators plying on Wardha Road. Besides this, a land parcel in front of New Airport Metro Station is also there, which is under MahaMetro. However, no representative of MahaMetro was present despite pre-intimation. Civic authorities plan to clear bushes and realign the depot space before finalising the arrangements. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo A follow-up meeting has been scheduled to take a final call on land use, responsibilities of agencies, and operational modalities. Chaudhari also directed the revenue department to explore levying parking charges on private operators on a per-hour basis, a move that could help NMC bridge its annual viability gap funding of over Rs150 crore. "Facilities will not be provided free of cost," officials emphasised. NMC has seven bus depots apart from Mor Bhavan, the main terminus for Aapli Bus services. These include Khapri, Hingna, Wadi, Lakadganj, Wathoda, Patwardhan Ground, and Koradi. Of these, Khapri, Koradi, and Wadi are considered the most feasible for private buses as they are located along national highways and outside city limits, making them more accessible for long-distance passengers. DCP (traffic) Lohit Matani earlier stated that traffic police communicated with NMC, Nagpur Metro Region Development Authority (NMRDA), and Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) to identify designated pick-up and drop-off points for private buses. A traffic police survey highlighted the heavy daily movement of buses across several routes — 642 on Wardha–Yavatmal–Chandrapur, 190 on Amravati–Pune–Nashik, 78 on Koradi–Chhindwara, 296 on Jabalpur–Bhopal–Indore, 92 on Bhandara–Gondia–Chhattisgarh, and 308 on Brahmapuri–Gadchiroli via Umred Road. Authorities have stressed that private bus services should function only from depots outside city limits. Passengers will then be required to use the metro, taxis, autorickshaws, and other local transport to reach these hubs. Currently, NMC operates 470 buses under the Aapli Bus service, including 255 e-buses, 150 midi buses, 45 mini buses, and over 50 standard buses. Daily ridership touched 1.78 lakh, showing steady growth in demand for public transport. Officials believe that opening depots to private operators, while ensuring revenue through parking charges, can help streamline transport and ease congestion within city limits.
