Maeda's current contract is due to expire in two years, and talks are continuing regarding an extension: "There have been discussions going on in the background," said Rodgers. "I don't have any updates on it.

"I don't know of any developments on that."
The Celtic boss was then asked how confident he is of keeping Maeda at the club: "I'm very confident of that, yeah, as can be," he replied.
A versatile frontman, Maeda particularly impressed when he played as a central striker last term.
This campaign, however, he has started Celtic's opening two league fixtures on the left wing.
"I've always said that he's a player that can play in there," said Rodgers, when asked whether he plans to use Maeda as a number nine at any point.
"We've had other options in the past.
"He's shown when he's gone in there that he can play well, so that's always an option for me."
Celtic return to action tomorrow evening as they take on Falkirk in the Premier Sports Cup.

After a challenging start to his Rangers tenure, the last thing Russell Martin needed was a former Ibrox team-mate criticising his tactics on a public forum. However, the Rangers head coach insists he has no objections with Andy Halliday airing his unflattering views on his style of play after the draws against Motherwell and Dundee which have left his side four points behind Celtic just two matches into the Premiership season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Halliday, who plays for Motherwell but also works as a media pundit, used a tactics board to explain where he felt Rangers were going wrong under Martin. Critiquing the 1-1 draw with Dundee on the Open Goal podcast, he noted that Rangers were short of numbers in attack. (Photo by Rob Casey / SNS Group) | SNS Group "Dundee played a 5-4-1, really compact, really tight, really deep and narrow,' Halliday said. 'Rangers went with a flat back four and they had five players attacking eleven players. How are you going to create chances and score goals if you're five v eleven? You would struggle to score against kids in training if you were five v eleven.' Addressing Halliday's comments during his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Alloa in the Premier Sports Cup second round on Saturday, Martin said: "I like Andy. I regard him as a really good ex-teammate and a good person. I'm sure at some point we'll have a coffee in the West End and we'll sit down and discuss. I know he wants to coach at some point. But when you work in the media you have to give an opinion, right? I've got absolutely no problem with it all, although I never said we'd be play inverted full-backs, so I have told him that." Halliday is not alone in questioning Martin's approach after his Rangers side struggled to break down Dundee last Sunday while the follow-up performance against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League third qualifying round second leg on Tuesday night left a lot to be desired as Rangers edged through 4-2 on aggregate despite losing 2-1 on the night. (Photo by) 'The perfect analogy' "There's been an energy around this place for a while, inside and outside, where there's been a lot of disappointment, frustration and criticism,' he explained. 'While we are here, our job is to really focus on what we can effect, and what we can impact. If we do our jobs to the best of our ability in here, and focus on the work, being better, and having really high standards that this club should stand for, I just don't see how it doesn't go in the right direction. "One of the maintenance guys here this week said, 'we're turning a tanker around, gaffer, and it will just take some time, but when we get it going...'. I thought it was the perfect analogy. "We've just qualified for the Champions League [play-offs]. I spoke to the staff on Sunday after Dundee because everyone here supporters the club and they really feel things. But our job here is to just work and not let the outside noise affect how we work. It just can't. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

The Hoops have registered their initial 25-man squad for the playoff decider with Kazakhs Kairat Almaty Celtic have submitted their initial 25-man squad for next week's Champions League playoff. And there's no place for summer signing Hayato Inamura. Brendan Rodgers had until last night to register his team for Wednesday's first leg clash with Kairat Almaty at Parkhead - although the Hoops can add a couple of wildcards up until Tuesday at 11pm. Celtic have filled their full European quota, with new Bhoys Kieran Tierney, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, Ben Nygren, Shin Yamada and Callum Osmand all included. However, Japanese defender Inamura has been left out, with the £250k signing from Albirex Niigata likely to head out on loan before the transfer window shuts. Marco Tilio has not been chosen either as the While crocked Jota is unlikely to play any European football this year as he faces a long road to recovery. Celtic summer signing left OUT of Champions League squad for crucial play-off against Kairat Almaty
BRENDAN RODGERS has submitted his 25-man squad for the Champions League play-off tie against Kairat Almaty. Celtic host the Kazakhstan champions at Parkhead next week in the first leg before making their gruelling trip across the globe the following week - just days before their first meeting with Rangers of the season. 1 The first leg is just days away for Brendan Rodgers and his players Credit: PA The Hoops gaffer has been very vocal in the lead up to the fixture about his desire to improve his squad with more signings ahead of the potential £40million showdown. But his demands haven't been met and he'll only have his current summer signings available for the massive clash - apart from one. The manager has decided to leave Hayato Inamura behind for the two legs as he HASN'T been included in his roster for the two games. It's a surprising move from the Northern Irishman, who is already lacking left-back options as it is - without a direct backup for Kieran Tierney. The manager initially revealed the Japanese star WOULDN'T be part of his first team plans when he arrived in Glasgow last month.
