While the planting numbers are encouraging, environmentalists warn that quantity alone does not ensure ecological impact.
'The state needs to pay equal attention to the survival of saplings,' said a conservationist, adding that watering, fencing, and follow-up care are often overlooked after planting drives.
With over 1 lakh saplings still short of the target and several departments yet to catch up, officials say mid-year reviews will focus on ground verification and sustainability tracking. Departments lagging behind are expected to intensify efforts in the monsoon months, when conditions for planting are most favourable, they added.

GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan urges officials to ensure smooth conduct of Ganesh fete
HYDERABAD: GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan has urged the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi (BGUS) and officials from all government departments concerned to extend their cooperation to ensure the upcoming Ganesh festival is organised smoothly across the city. He chaired a preparatory convergence meeting at the GHMC Head Office with senior officials from various departments and BGUS members to review arrangements for the festival, scheduled to begin on August 27, 2025, and conclude with idol immersion on September 6, 2025. Karnan said that, like in previous years, GHMC, police, and other agencies will work in close coordination to make the celebrations a grand success. He added that repair works are already underway on roads damaged due to heavy rains, and any pending works on national highways used for idol processions will also be completed in time. He assured that more cranes will be deployed at immersion points. There will be no budgetary constraints, with more funds allocated compared to last year for logistics and arrangements.

Plantation drive in Wyra constituency
Wyra (Khammam): In a move aimed at promoting environmental awareness and ecological sustainability, ITC's Mission Sunehra Kal (MSK), in collaboration with its implementing partner ARHEDS and in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), celebrated Vana Mahotsavam at the Telangana Social Welfare Residential School and Junior College (TGSWRS/Jr) in Wyra on Monday. The green initiative saw the plantation of over 250 saplings, comprising 10 native species, across the school campus. The event focused on enhancing biodiversity, strengthening the local green cover, and instilling environmental consciousness among school students. The event drew the participation of key dignitaries, including Anil Kumar Epur, Chairman, CII Green Landscape Committee; K.S. Venkatagiri, Executive Director, CII – Green Business Centre; Rekha, Senior Counsellor, CII-GBC; Usharani, Deputy General Manager, Corporate Affairs, PSPD DHQ; and Chengal Rao, DGM, HR, PSPD Bhadrachalam. Also present were R. Jayaprakash, Senior Programme Manager of ITC MSK Telangana, along with Dr D. Samatha, Principal of TGSWRS Wyra, and T. Parvani, SMS Entomology, KVK Wyra. Addressing the gathering, the dignitaries underscored the significance of large-scale tree plantation programmes in combating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and promoting community-driven environmental action. Speaking on the occasion, R. Jayaprakash of ITC MSK noted that 'planting native species not only restores ecological balance but also provides a learning opportunity for students to understand the importance of conservation at an early age.' The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, who actively took part in the plantation drive and interacted with the guests about environmental issues and sustainability practices. School principal Dr Samatha expressed her appreciation for the initiative, noting that such partnerships create meaningful exposure for students while supporting the state's efforts to promote environmental responsibility. Hyderabad: City braces for hassle-free conduct of Ganesh festival
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner R V Karnan has urged the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi and government officials to extend their cooperation to ensure the forthcoming Ganesh festival is held in a peaceful atmosphere. The festival is scheduled to commence on August 27 and conclude on September 6. On Monday, a preparatory coordination meeting was convened at the GHMC headquarters, involving senior officials from the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi and concerned departments to discuss the arrangements for the festival. Karnan stated that repairs are currently underway for roads that were damaged by heavy rains within the city limits. He added that roads on the national highways where Ganesh idol processions are set to occur will also be repaired. Furthermore, he indicated that more cranes will be deployed than last year to facilitate a smooth and swift immersion process, following directives from the police department. The Commissioner informed the members of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi that there are no budgetary issues for the festival, and additional funds will be allocated compared to previous years for various activities and logistical support. Karnan mentioned that coordination meetings will take place within zonal limits to ensure the festival runs smoothly and that past shortcomings would be addressed to prevent inconvenience to devotees. Additional Commissioner (Law & Order) Vikram Singh Mann proposed several recommendations to ensure the Ganesh festival runs smoothly. He noted that each year, the festival is celebrated without issues thanks to the collaboration between Bhagyanagar, various Ganesh Utsav Samitis, and government departments. He emphasised the importance of using high-quality materials, wiring, and logistics for the construction of Ganesh pandals and mandapams, especially considering the likelihood of heavy rainfall. Vikram Singh requested that the installation of idols be planned according to the route map and vehicle height in advance, to prevent complications and traffic congestion caused by tall idols during the procession. He requested the installation of at least one CCTV camera at every mandapam and emphasised the need for utilising volunteer services, suggesting a minimum of three volunteers for larger mandapams. Additionally, he proposed that distinct routes be established for visitors to these larger mandapams. The officer also mentioned that if all Ganesh idol processions throughout the city, including those in Khairatabad and Balapur, commence punctually, the immersion process will proceed without any issues. The meeting saw the presence of numerous officials, including Traffic Joint CP Joel Davis, Additional Commissioners Raghu Prasad and Subhadra, HMDA Joint Commissioner Kota Srivastava, CE Ratnakar, Electrical CE Prabhakar, and Zonal Commissioners Anurag Jayanthi, Ravi Kiran, Venkanna, Hemant Sahadeva Rao, and Apoorva Chauhan. Representatives from HMDA, HMRL, TSRTC, Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda Commissionerate Police, along with officials from the HMWSSB, Fire, Irrigation, Tourism, Health, Pollution Control Board, and Transco departments, were also present.
