'SIR means stealing votes from the people of Bihar': Rahul slams BJP, ECI

Addressing the public at the 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Aurangabad, the Congress MP said, "SIR means stealing votes from the people of Bihar. Earlier, they used to do it secretly. Now they are doing it openly in front of everyone."
He launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP, stating that neither he, nor Tejeshwar Yadav, nor the people of Bihar are afraid of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and the Election Commission.
"The people of the election commission say that yes, we will cut voters, and we will not tell you, we will not show you the voter list. What will you do? I will tell you what we will do. We are going to show you the power of the people. We are going to show you the power of Bihar. Modi ji, Amit Shah ji and people of the Election Commission should understand that I am not afraid of you, neither Tejeshwar Yadav nor Bihar. I am saying this as a guarantee, the truth of vote theft. We will put it in front of every citizen of India, in front of their eyes," he later added.
The Congress MP alleged that the Election Commission, saying, "The Election Commission asks for an affidavit from me. But when Anurag Thakur says the same thing that I am saying, it does not ask for an affidavit from him."
The Leader of Opposition further claimed that in Maharashtra, the INDI bloc won the Lok Sabha elections, but the BJP swept the Vidhan Sabha elections held four months later.
"Wherever new voters came, the BJP won there. Our votes did not decrease. The INDIA alliance got as many votes in the Vidhan Sabha as it had in the Lok Sabha. BJP got all the new voters. So we got suspicious," Rahul Gandhi said.
The Congress leader alleged that when the INDIA bloc asked the Election Commission to explain the sudden addition of new voters, the poll panel refused to respond.
"Election Commission tells us that we will not explain. We do not need you to explain. Then we told them that you have installed CCTVs. The law is that CCTV cameras will have to be provided to any party asking for CCTV. They say they will not provide CCTV. Then we said give us the voter list. They say they will not provide the electronic voter list. The Election Commission and the BJP together have committed theft in Bengaluru Central. I am telling you this with a guarantee," the Congress MP added.
The Congress party is currently holding a 16-day 'Voter Adhikar Yatra', protesting against the alleged 'vote chori' that Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission and the BJP of perpetrating.
The yatra began from Bihar's Sasaram today, with several leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Pawan Khera, Kanhaiya Kumar and others participating.
The Chief Election Commisioner of India on Sunday refuted allegations of "vote theft" by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and asked him to either furnish a signed affidavit or apologise to the nation for his remarks.

Why BJP chose C P Radhakrishnan as its VP candidate
Written by K Nageshwar In the BJP, everything seems to be seen from a political prism. The choice of the Vice-Presidential candidate, too, cannot be without consummate political calculations. Since 2014, despite occasional reverses, the BJP could demonstrate a formidable strength in Northern and Western India. Of late, the party is trying very hard to consolidate their voter base in Eastern India and penetrate the not-so-favourable political terrain of South India. The Presidential nominee was chosen from Odisha in the East, and now, the Vice-Presidential nominee, C P Radhakrishnan, is from the South – for obvious reasons. Tamil Nadu and Telangana are the two aspirational states for the BJP in South India, with Kerala not showing any promising possibilities despite its expanding vote share. Karnataka, on the other hand, is where the BJP already has a very strong presence. C P Radhakrishnan, who has been associated with the RSS from an early age, is a clever choice, because the state he belongs to, Tamil Nadu, goes to the polls next year. Though the BJP on its own has a limited vote share in a state that fiercely resists its Hindi-Hindutva ideological push, the party hopes to do better in an alliance with the AIADMK. C P Radhakrishnan belongs to the OBC Gounder caste, which more or less rallies politically behind the AIADMK. E Palaniswami, the party's chief and the former chief minister, belongs to the same community. Though the OBC credentials of Radhakrishnan are not going to be a big element in Tamil Nadu as Dravidian politics are centred around marginalised castes and social justice, it would certainly further the BJP's inclusive Hindutva narrative in the North, where the mandalisation of politics is a big factor. C P Radhakrishnan represented the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency in Parliament. Coimbatore is a part of Kongu Nadu region of Tamil Nadu. Several leaders of the BJP supported the demand for a separate state of Kongu Nadu. Hindutva politics has a relatively stronger appeal in Coimbatore compared to the rest of the state. Radhakrishnan was elected in the wake of a bomb blast in Coimbatore during the electioneering of L K Advani. The BJP is being accused of undermining Tamil sentiment with its Hindi supremacist position. The party is trying hard to make its presence felt in the Dravidian heartland with gestures like placing the Sengol, the symbol of the Chola dynasty, in the new Parliament building. The BJP also tried in vain to manoeuvre with Rajinikanth and O Panneerselvam (OPS). It made an audacious bid under the aggressive leadership of Annamalai to get a political foothold on its own. As all these attempts failed, the BJP came back to the AIADMK to remain relevant in Tamil politics, which is a politics that challenges mainstream North Indian Hindi political rhetoric. The southern states are also complaining of political marginalisation and economic discrimination, a trust deficit that is expected to widen with the ensuing delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies. The BJP, therefore, is attempting to court voters in South India with such symbolic gestures like choosing the Vice-Presidential nominee from the region. The BJP burnt its fingers with the choice of Jagdeep Dhankhar. The party chose him due to his Jat credentials, a community it had angered with its controversial farm laws. Dhankhar, however, proved to be a big embarrassment subsequently, despite his earlier subservience to the Prime Minister. A non-controversial and affable leader like C P Radhakrishnan will, on the other hand, serve the BJP without upsetting the Opposition too much, all the more important given the turbulence in politics and Parliament. The MPs cast a single transferable vote with a secret ballot. The Opposition INDIA bloc will meet today to discuss its nominee for the Vice Presidential elections. Overall, the electoral college currently has 788 MPs, 588 in the Lok Sabha and 245 in the Rajya Sabha. It consists of 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha for the Vice Presidential Election Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji. ECI presser raises more questions than answers to the issues highlighted by INDIA bloc: MK Stalin
CHENNAI: Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin on Monday said that the press conference addressed by the full Bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI) led by CEC Gyanesh Kumar has raised more questions than answers about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). He said the press conference raised more questions than what the INDIA Bloc had already highlighted. The CM, in his post on the X handle, asked how there could be so many deletions of eligible voters when house-to-house enumeration was taken. Pointing out that the enrolment of new voters is abnormally low now, the CM asked: " Were these young voters enumerated? Has any database been compiled to show how many youngsters who turned 18 on the qualifying date were included?". Stalin underscored that the procedure for enquiry and two appeals, along with their timelines as contemplated under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, might exclude a huge number of voters in the forthcoming elections in Bihar. The Tamil Nadu CM also questioned if the ECI will take these practical difficulties into account while conducting the SIR in other States. The question assumes significance since the revision may start in Tamil Nadu soon. Recalling that on July 17, the DMK requested the ECI to delete the names of deceased voters from the rolls by undertaking the exercise contemplated in its notification dated May 1, the CM asked when this would be done by the Commission. The DMK president also asked the Commission what prevented the ECI from enlisting Aadhaar as one of the acceptable documents to prove a voter's claim.
